Don’t miss this opportunity. Scholarship applications are due to the County Extension Office by 5:00 pm on January 19, 2018. This scholarship application will put a Senior 4-H member in the running for the 2.3 million dollars that Texas 4-H distributes to its members annually in scholarships. All 4-H members that are in 12th grade this year need to take a look at the application to determine if you are eligible. If you are interested in a applying for a 4-H Opportunity Scholarship please contact Kristy at 936-435-2426 or email her at [email protected]. She is available to guide you through the application process.Please Note —This application requires several steps to be completed before the January 19th deadline so please take a look at the application to determine if you are interested in applying for the scholarship as soon as possible.

Walker County Fair Exhibitor Work DaysRemember all exhibitors must have 5 work hours no later than Thursday, April 5th, 2018 in order to show a project at the 2018 Walker County Fair.
2018 Work Hour Opportunities
Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 2:00—4:00 pm Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 8:00—10:00 am
Walker County Fair 4-H Project RequirementsA Walker County 4-H member must meet the following requirements to be eligible to exhibit a project
at the Walker County Fair as a 4-H Project.
1) To be a member in good standing you must participate in a minimum of 3 educational activities (4-Hmeetings) within the 4-H year. Please remember to sign in at the club meetings to receive credit.(Food Club, Commercial Heifer and Sewing Club exhibitors - 2 of the 3 required meetings must be in yourdesignated project area.)
2) To be a member in good standing you must complete a Project Record Form or a 4-H Record Book on theproject that you are exhibiting at the fair. Project Record Forms are due at the County Extension Office byMarch 16, 2018. Contact the Extension Office if you plan on completing a 4-H Record Book.
Note: Commercial Heifer and Scramble Heifer exhibitors are not required to turn in a Project Record Formor 4-H Recordbook to the County Extension Office. They are required by WCF program rules to turn in aCommercial Heifer or Scramble Heifer Recordbook to their committee chairman prior to showing at theWCF.
3) 4-H is recognized by the Texas Education Agency as an extracurricular activity. All 4-H members participatingin any competitive event must be passing all classes in order to compete. Prior to each competitive event, eachschool will be notified and asked to identify 4-H members who are not academically eligible as of the most recentgrading period. If a 4-H member is not passing, they will be notified by theExtension Agent and will not beeligible to exhibit a project at the Walker County Fair.

Don't forget to sign up for parent work hours by going to the http://www.walkercountyfair.com website and clicking on the "Get Involved" tab. Remember each exhibitor must have a parent or guardian work a 2 hour shift during the fair.

~Attention~CALLING ALL FOOD CLUB MEMBERS
Walker County 4-H Food Show
Walker County 4-H Food Show is just around the corner. This year the shows theme will be “Fresh from the Farm” The holiday season is a good time start looking for recipes that you may want to enter in the show. The categories for the 2018 4-H Food Show are
• Protein - All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soyproducts, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Beans and peas are alsopart of the Vegetable Group.
EX: Dishes that contain meat or meat alternative such as eggs, dry beans, peas or peanut butter.
• Fruit and Vegetable - Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruitsmay be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed. Any vegetable or 100%vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh,frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed. Vegetables are organizedinto 5 subgroups, based on their nutrient content.
EX: Dishes that accompany a main dish (salads, relish trays, cooked fruits and vegetables)
• Grains - Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is agrain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grainproducts. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, Whole Grains and Refined Grains. Whole grainscontain the entire grain kernel ― the bran, germ, and endosperm.
EX: Quick, yeast, bread mixes, rice, pasta
• Dairy - All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this foodgroup. Most Dairy Group choices should be fat-free or low-fat. Foods made from milk that retaintheir calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium,such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage) is alsopart of the Dairy Group.
EX: Dishes selected must contain a minimum of a half serving of dairy per serving (macaroni and cheese, drinks, custards, cheese logs, etc.)
Ingredients No alcohol or alcohol-containing ingredients can be used.
This years show will take place on January 29th at the Walker County Storm Shelter . All 4-H Walker County Food Show participants will qualify to compete in the District 9 4-H Food Show on May 4, 2018 at the Lone Star College in The Woodlands, Texas. Don’t forget to email your County Food Show Entry forms and recipes to [email protected] by January 22nd if you plan on participating.
