Green is the new GoldEco-friendly tips for your home

We hav e

all heard about

the dangers of globalwarming. But what can we

do about it? Here are some ideasfor you to do your bit for theenvironment and enjoy some

welcome savings onyour bills at the

sa me ti m e.

Get the light rightNot only can energy-ef cient lighting save on electricity, therefore reducing bills and helping the environment, butit can also enhance the overall mood and ambience ofyour home. Here are some tips for ef cient lighting.

• Not every room needs the same amount of generallight. Why not provide general background lighting and supplement this with lighting directed at speci c areas –for example, a reading lamp next to your favouritereading chair.

• Avoid distracting glares or shadows. Try to illuminateonly the area you need lit by bringing your light source closer. This saves energy by not over-lighting an unused area.

Powerful savings There are many ways to save electricity around your home. Whilesome might seem small, they all add up and together they candeliver a substantial saving on your electricity bills.

• Change the way you charge your phone. Are you in the habit of keeping your mobile on charge for the entire night? Save electricity and unplug your phone after it is fully charged.

• Change the location of your fridge so it is out of direct sunlight and not close to the oven, making it more energy ef cient. The best place is against an outside wall so that generated heat can escape easily.

• Defrost your fridge and freezer on a regular basis. An iced-up freezer will make the freezer work harder and use more energy than needed.
