"Hosting a researcher, a winning solution for corporate challenges"2 bad news …. 2 good news

No winning solution

But anyway there is no recipe either to win a gold medal at the Olympics. No recipe to be the best.

Be excellent at one thing

It may be enough to do a wonderful and meaningful business

Researchers bring innovation

Innovation brings incomparable competitiveadvantages

Why so many researchers without a job?

Because it not so simple

“Learn the rules like a professional, to break them like an artist”

Elveflow and the Microfluidic ValleyWho are we?

2011 Elveflow: private research lab +incubator

No fund rise – be profitable with scientific instruments

2011- 2019 Microfluidic Valley

10 deep tech companies – still alive? Lucky boy

POC to scale-up the company inception process

Create 10 company a year… 100 company a year

2018 Youhoouuu !!!34 research projects , 3 new start up incomingFrom 10 kebab to McDonald’s

Let’s see ;)

“Leaders don't force people to follow , They invite them on a journey”

Elveflow and the Microfluidic ValleyExperience with MSCA IF : our point of view (no advice!!!)

“Think like a strategist, and then act like a barbarian,”

50 people, 25 researchers

3 years - 10 IF obtained - 3 company inceptions

Case 1 : Hired to devellop new products

Clear R&D and MKT strategy - strong MNG => success

Case 2 : Hired to develop their own company/idea

Try to help them to make it come true

The market is the only R&D director

Idea, who will use my work, end user contact, iterate, R&D plan, MVProto

You like to turn directly your ideas into an R&D plan ?=> A quote from a well know American philosopher from the 21th century

Everybody has a plan when entering the ring……until they get my punch in the face.

“Forget about making mistakes, just do it,”

Most researcher want to do high impact researchContact the end users!

Each time you are in front of microscope ask yourself if an end user askedyou to do it. If not, you don‘t work, you play, with your time and UEmoney.

Forget about complex solutions to a non existing problem.Go to simple solutions to a big problem met by your end users.

Entrepreneurs aim… researchers shoot => you can do both!

“The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

What is the difference between Nature and unknows journals? Can be the same research but with different impact.Impact increases if someone really needs your research for a big purpose.

IF and SME: a wonderful match with side effectsHey CEO ! Why do SMEs need IF researchers?

“If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine, it is deadly.”

Researchers bring Innovation in hardware:

Competitive advantage => monopole => profitability

Not convinced?

Try to sell a product 10 times less good than a competitor’s

Expert hard worker with vision on the long run

Autonome, not afraid of novelty, knows how to learn => nice & clever

Page 10: Elveflow Microfluidic Innovation Center presents · Statement 1: Hard to fund a deep tech hardware project with VC before some end users validate the prototype (TRL6) => to risky,

IF and SME: a wonderful match with side effectsWhere you should be careful

“Be the chess player, not the chess piece.”

The end user should be the boss of your R&D

Anethesist, good ideas don’t come from your mind or publication. Contact end users as often as you were told to read publications.

Publication should not be an objective but a consequence

Solve an important societal problem with your R&D, the great publication will follow

The Romantic R&D protocol

Genious idea, bibliography, R&D plan, development of perfectprototype… end user contact… end of story…

Some academic beliefs are not relevant in the industrial world: need for deconstructionThat is why SMEs prefer hiring engineers than engineer with PhD => let’s break the wheel

The Innovation protocol

Genious idea, end users , iterate, identify locks, POC, R&D plan , MVProto, beta test, alpha test => valorization

Deep Tech Launcher: turn researchers into entrepreneursWhat limits deep tech valorisation today?

Statement 1: Hard to fund a deep tech hardware project with VC before some end users validate the prototype (TRL6) => to risky, no proof of success

Statement 2: EU invest Billions €/years on grant well fitted to fund R&D before prototype (TRL6 ) but young startups are too weak to apply

Statement 3: Research lab succesfully apply but most european researchers still don’t get adequate entrepreneurial culture and methodology

One conclusion

We need a place to give European researchers an entrepreneurial culture by immersion and give adaptedtools to help them turn their research into companyinception

“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare, it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.”

Biotech revolution and the Microfluidic Valley2019/2020 : The Deep Tech Launcher

Helping researchers to become entrepreneurs

Turning prototype into profitable companies

Funding young company when nobody would do it

Startup school Multidisciplinary researchlab

Startup incubator A seed fund

To turn idea into prototypes

“Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you anywhere.”

Let’s turn the billions of euros invested by the EU in biotech research into real DeepTech companies!

In 2020, we would like to open a short training program to any ITN or IF fellow funded by EU to help them doing innovation when coming back to their labs or SME
