Critical Reflection Upon completing the assignment for the course TSL 3033 ELT Methodology, I have cooperated with my group members, Allenovack and Ong Shi Jing in order to finish the coursework. We are assigned with the task to come up with an activity for the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) method. After going through discussions and research so many times, we came up with a decision to do role play activity for our coursework. Because we were doing the coursework amidst so many compulsory events in the campus, we struggled to finish it in the given time since we have so many campus-related activities that are running for the whole coursework submission week. However, we still managed to finish it on time after putting extra effort into it which makes us realized that nothing is impossible as long as u worked hard for it. Other than that, my personal challenge when doing this coursework is when my laptop suddenly went crazy and cannot be opened which makes me unable to do my part in the coursework. Fortunately, the problem only lasted for two days and I managed to catch up to the coursework. After we did our microteaching and presented our coursework. I managed to identify the strengths and the weaknesses of our chosen activity for that particular method. As for the strength of role play, firstly, it is a very interesting activity which can almost surely attracts the pupil’s attention in class since they will be able to do the thing they like to do the most, which is, moving around. Many different materials can be brought to further attract the pupil’s attention while teaching them new vocabulary. This method is also very useful for the pupils because they can apply it in their real life because most of the activities are based on the simulation of communication in certain situations. This way, they will gain more confidence to speak in English language more often because this activity will leave an impression in their selves that English is fun.Unfortunately, this method also has its own weaknesses which can be overcome if it managed properly. Firstly, this method usually requires a great amount of time especially for a class with a great number of pupils. Teachers will have to manage the time really well for it to be successful and to make sure that the learning objectives can be achieved by the time the class ends. Even explaining about the activity to the pupils will take time to make sure they fully understand what they should do. Moreover, this teaching method does not guarantee the involvement of all the pupils in the class for some activities. In our case, when we are doing role play, we will divide the pupils in a group of five. So in that group, not all the group members will get to talk in their role play because some may just be an unimportant side character that only stand still and do nothing. Next, the role of the teachers in this method is very minor because the only functions to facilitate the communication between the pupils. Pupils will have to think and decide all by themselves which can have negative impact on them. For instance, when pupils just randomly decide something even though its wrong, teachers will not know about it unless the pupils ask about it. If the pupils are too shy to ask, they might learn the wrong things because their discussions are only among themselves. Looking at the weaknesses, I believe we can somehow modify the activity so that those weaknesses can be overcome so that it can be used for a better learning. First, as the teacher, we must walk around the class during the pupils discussion and search for any group that need helps. This way, we can identify the group that need helps easier rather than just standing somewhere in the class and waits for the pupils to come and ask questions. Next, teachers should also plan the lesson very carefully so that the time will be sufficient for all the group to present their role play. As for the involvement, in the given situation, teachers can assign the characters and what they should talk about in their role play. This way, everyone will get their own dialogue.As the conclusion, CLT is a very useful method to be taught to the pupils because they can apply it in their daily life. However, we should vary our teaching method and not just use the same one every time because each method has their own strength and weaknesses. Last but not least, teacher should always think about the pupils in planning every lesson so that the pupils will get the benefits from our teaching.( 838 words )
