California STAR ProgramThe California Standardized Testing and Reporting

(STAR) Program measures how well the California education system and its students are performing.

These tests measure student achievement in:Mathematics – 2nd grade – 5th gradeEnglish–Language Arts – 2nd grade – 5th gradeScience – 5th grade only California’s goal is for all students to perform at the proficient or advanced level.

2nd – 5th: May 13th – May 28th

CST Performance Levels Measuring Student Progress

AdvancedSuperior performance. Students demonstrate a comprehensive and complex understanding of knowledge and skills.

Proficient Solid performance. Students demonstrate a competent and adequate understanding of knowledge and skills.

Basic Limited performance. Students demonstrate a partial and rudimentary understanding of knowledge and skills.

Far Below/Below Basic Lack of performance. Students demonstrate little or flawed understanding of knowledge and skills.

Preparing for CST TestsLimit use of TV watching and Video GamesResearch finds a direct correlation between the number of hours childrenspend watching television or playing video games and achievement levels ofstandardized test.

Plenty of rest and healthy breakfast Research supports the best preparation for these tests is a good night’s sleepand a healthy breakfast!

Attitude is Everything! Send your child to school prepared to do his/her best and it will happen!

ST Math and Study Island online reinforcement (Check with teacher to be sure your child is set up for home use).

Teacher supply stores provide wonderful workbooks for STAR test practice. You can also go to the California Department of Education website and have your child take the sample questions.
