“When we first came to view, nearly 13 years ago, we were immediately attracted by the large garden, which offered space for the children and room to grow our own produce and keep chickens,” recalls Caroline. “The house was dated internally but we could see its potential and we loved the staircase with its wrought iron work and dark wood banister; I subsequently taught the children how to slide down the banister, and every Christmas we’ve dressed it up with ivy and greenery from the garden.”

“The house became a building site with no carpets for the first four years,” remembers Caroline. “We reinstated the original internal shutters in the living room and dining room and moved doors around to improve the flow. The previous owners had built a two-storey extension, comprising a games room above a self-contained one-bedroom flat. We turned the games room into two bedrooms, including an en-suite master bedroom, reconfigured the entire first floor and updated the family bathroom.”

“Next to the study is a utility room, while a door opposite leads to a versatile basement under the living and dining rooms,” continues Caroline. “One room is a workshop and has an adjoining coal and wood store for the open fireplace in the living room. The other room has been used as a playroom and for storage, and usefully has its own door to the garden.”

“The garden has a woodland area with a succession of snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells beneath – it attracts lots of birds,” adds Caroline. “We created vegetable and flower gardens, a pond, a small orchard with a children’s seating area, a chicken house and run, and a yew hedge along the bottom boundary. The south-east facing frontage has two patio areas; the patio next to the dining kitchen is surrounded by lavender and rosemary and is a lovely place to sit all year, while on the lawn below we’ve hosted many gatherings, including one for the Diamond Jubilee with bunting all around.”

“It’s a quiet oasis yet is ideally placed for good schools, the local shopping centre and sports centre, while rail and motorway links are also excellent; Meadowhall Shopping Centre is just one junction down on the M1,” concludes Caroline.

We also knocked through to the ground floor flat and created a new dining kitchen alongside a flexible family
