Interventions to Promote Pro-Social Behavior

• Strategies are focused on student engagement• Interventions occur over time, usually months or years• Interventions involve a component of parent involvement• Interventions should be strength based and involve a

variety of contexts

Parent/Family EngagementSome Effective Strategies

• Recruit, support, and value the roles of parents as: teachers, leaders, resources, decision makers, advocates and trainers of others

• Invite, encourage, and support parental/family involvement. Address specific parental needs by recognizing, respecting, and addressing cultural and class differences

• Set high expectations for your “partnership” with parents/families. Set High expectations and act upon those beliefs. Parents need to believe that the school truly does value them and the partnership.

Review of some of the modules thus far in our training sessions.

• Module 1 A Critical National Concern• Module 2: What the Research Tells Us• Module 3: Using Data to Identify Dropout-

Related Needs• By analyzing Data and noting patterns, we

can identify areas of risk and need• Once the needs are known, we can target

them with appropriate programs or interventions.

WHERE ARE WE?

Page 17: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

Phase 1Data Analysis:

Your team has examined:

• School climate

• Parent involvement

• Community factors

Page 18: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

Phase 2: Identify Target Areas for Intervention

• What are the top two or three major factors associated with dropout/school graduation in your school?

• How did your team prioritize these factors?

• What initiatives and partnerships are in place within the district or region to address priorities?

Page 19: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

Phase 3:Develop Improvement/Action Plan

• What will we need to do to make these practices work in our school?

• What are my strategies for communicating this information and buy in from my staff?

• What training is needed/who needs to be trained?

• What additional information and/or support will you need to move forward?

Page 20: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

How are your teams doing?

As we continue to discussion and hear from a few of our coaches, please consider:

• How are my teams doing?• Have they clearly identified needs?• Have they prioritized their needs?• Have they selected strategies/interventions

that match the needs?• Are specific students/student groups

targeted for intervention?

Page 21: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

COACHES SPEAK OUT!

• During the next few months I will be asking Coaches to share with our group some of their data and progress of teams as they move forward.

• Today Jennifer Leahy, Lauren Wilson, and Fran Bay are going to briefly share how they are helping teams move forward as they refine Action Plans.

Page 22: Elluminate Session February 29 th 2008 Agenda I.Housekeeping II.March 14 th training at Serenbe III.Teaching Matrix from Robert’s Presentation (Pro-Social

As we look forward…

• Drill down into your data; Have you narrowed your focus and identified specific issues and possible solutions/interventions?

• Are you able to target our focus group?• What types of research based interventions are

you looking at that we can match to your specific needs?

• Determine training that may be needed to implement the interventions.

Phase 4: Implement, Monitor, and Evaluate

• Baseline measures

• Implement strategies: on-site coaching, consultation, & feedback

• Measure results

• Evaluate outcomes

• Celebrate success

• Disseminate
