Animal Friends Humane Society celebrated its eighth annual Bark ‘n’ Purr Ball on March 16th. It is the largest fundraising event for this 501(c)(3) organization. Tickets were sold-out to 500 ani-mal lovers. The fundraising committee had every reason to be proud. Everything about it was extraordinary. Receptions, where the event was held, has undergone a new facelift giving the interior a brighter, more spacious look. The dinner tables were exquisite, each with a centerpiece of adoption success stories and pets in need of homes.

Saturday, February 9th we had an AMAZING turnout at Scotty’s Pub for our first ever ‘Rock Fur the Paws’ hosted by Brass Owl. Everyone rocked the night away to a variety of fantastic live music. All the bands donated their time and talents including: A Nervous Wreck, Chiva Kneivel, Double Tap, Fancy Pants, Caffeine, and several other guest musicians. Scotty’s Pub generously allowed us to receive a $5.00 donation at the door from all who attended and a percentage of sales generated throughout the evening. At the end of the night we ‘rocked’ away with $3,026! It was so great to see pet lovers unite for a fantastic night of rock music. A special thank you to Brian and Laine Tarter. This event would not have been possible without you.

My husband and I adopted our dog, Muki, from Animal Friends in October of 2011. His name was Doug when we adopted him. So his full name is Muki Douglas McAdams. He is Husky mix and Muki means sweet and gentle in Slovinia (it is a sled dog name). He is a great companion for our dog Ellie, a 12 year old Golden mix. She lost her best buddy Eddie to cancer a month before we got Muki. We brought Ellie with us to meet Muki when we adopted him. He licked her face and washed her ears just like Eddie used to. At that moment, we knew he and Ellie would be best buddies. Muki LOVES cats. I attached the photo of Muki & BC which was used for a Christmas Kroger Ad. BC was a wild feral cat I trapped in February 2012 and had fixed and tested at OAR (Ohio Alleycat Rescue). I kept him in a cage for several months and put a glove in with a pole taped to it and I would pet him. For a long time he would try and kill the glove. He finally realized that I was not going to hurt him and started to enjoy it. He is now a big love bug. Thanks for all you do for stray animals! Wendy & Pete

Bo was a victim of cruelty and was seized from his previous owner back in 2011. A wonderful supporter and animal lover, Debbie Hyde, took Bo in and cared for him. He needed a lot of time and love, and that is exactly what Debbie gave him. He was so afraid of everything. Once he realized there was nothing to be afraid of he began enjoying being fed and groomed. When he would be turned out to pasture he did not want to leave people. He then met his current family, the Skeltons. They started working with him and teaching him driving. He learned very quickly! He especially enjoys the treats when he is finished driving. :) Other free time for Bo includes playing in the arena. When it’s time to go to his stall they open the gate and say, “Bo, go to your stall.” He goes right in and stays. He has found a permanent home and they love the little fellow. He has made friends with all the other horses the Skeltons have and they all love to run and play! We are thrilled that Bo has found his forever home.

It’s been a while since I adopted “Wind”, now called “Boomer”. After my dog of 9 years died and a really sad adoption from a rescue group, Boomer has been a real heart healer and blessing to me! He is just the sweetest little boy EVER!!!

I HAVE ATTACHED A PICTURE OF HIM TAKEN IN HIS NEW FOR-EVER HOME!

God Bless all your good work.

Bark-n-Purr - continued from page 1

No one could resist looking at the hundreds of beautiful baskets. Patrons gathered to admire a large cat tree sculptured to the likeness of a cat. It was designed and donated by Lisa and Ed Minton. The silent auction was anything but silent as people filled the room. Bidders continuously monitored their treasures, driving up the bids with good will and hopes of getting the most benefit for the animals. Year after year, that’s what this fundraiser is all about. The fun, commraderie and delicious meal are all a part of it. The Bark ‘n’ Purr is my New Years Eve. It is purpose driven excitement filled with opportunities to meet people who work behind the scenes to help the shelter. As one lovely lady put it, we all do what we can for the animals. She had her eyes on a rendering of St Francis and returned to raise the bid. One of the best testimonials to the fun of the Bark ‘n’ Purr: a 17 year old girl ditched a date with a guy, so that she could come to the event with her mom! They attended for the first time last year, loved it and did not want to miss out on this one. Highlights of the evening included live music by Thunderbay Band, the game Heads or Tails and a new game, Wine Toss. If you could ring a bottle of wine with a small pet collar, the bottle was yours! The guest of honor was a Beagle-mix, Lucy Hockenbery escorted by Debbie Hockenbery. Shelter Director, Meg Stephenson shared Lucy’s success story. She had been a victim of animal cruelty and received medical care while she resided at the shelter. Her life was forever changed when she was adopted in April 2012. Debbie received applause for rescuing Lucy and for following up on all of Lucy’s medical needs. The sweet pup was strolled about, receiving lots of loving attention, always willing to stop for photographs. The live auction featured many amazing items including a beau-tiful wildlife painting donated by world renowned artist Christopher Walden and an autographed guitar from John Mellencamp. State Senator Bill Coley donated a Kate Spade Designer Handbag Set.

AFHS Children’s Essay Contest!

What is wrong with the message on this sign? There are 2 correct answers. Can you tell us what they are? Show us your animal smarts by telling us in a few sentences or a small paragraph. Have mom or dad take a photo of you with your essay. Be as creative as you like. You may want to include your pet(s) in the photo or display your own sign! If you know how to type on the computer, feel free. Maybe mom or dad could get a picture of you while you are typing. Just make sure we get a photo of you along with your essay!

The top entries will be published in the Summer issue of Animal Tales. With your entry, be sure to include your first name and your age.

Parents: It is okay if your child requires help with the answers and perhaps a little with their project, but please do not edit their words. Let them do as much as pos-sible for themselves. Afterall, this is their contest! Spelling and punctuation errors will not affect selection. Your child will need your help with photos and submitting their entries. If your child hand writes their essay, please take a fully readable close-up for publication, in addition to the photo of your child.

All entries are to be emailed to: [email protected] by June 15th, 2013. Topic: AFHS Kids Contest. Parents, feel free to follow the submission with your own note indicating if your child required help with the answers. This will have no bearing on who gets published. This might be added only as a point of interest in the selected entries. Folks, don’t forget you can help spread your child’s message by posting it online. This way, everybody wins - most especially the animals!

Kids get busy, have fun and good luck!

Fittingly, the item that knocked the ball out of the park was a package deal of four Reds/ Marlin tickets, seats within 8 rows behind home plate, plus the gourmet buffet in the elite Diamond Club Lounge! Something more that added to the night was the presence of the shelter’s most devot-ed dog walkers. Most all of them were able to attend, some for their first time. Normally booted up and covered with muddy paw prints, these remarkable volunteers have basically made the shelter their second home. Every chance they get, they are there for the dogs. After the event was over, they rushed from table to table gathering the success stories. They called out the names of the dogs they had all known, walked and loved. ‘Look! There’s Sally Sue!’ They held them to their hearts as they left. These were their treasures. For them, there was no grander a prize than knowing the affection of these animals. Animal Friends Humane Society thanks all of its loyal supporters and everyone who contributed. We look forward to your return next year, March 15th, 2014!
