Ellen Feickert Elementary January Newsletter Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe it is 2016!!! We, at Feickert School, are rested and ready to go for what will prove to be another amazing school year!! We hope the winter break found you and your family enjoying the holidays.
Mad Science Is your student creative? Do they like to concoct strange chemical mixtures? Well then, have we got an after-school program for you (and your student). The nice folks at Mad Science will join students at their lunches on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016! Students will be treated to a scientific demonstration to excite them about this curricular area. Students are invited to join the after-school, fee based program. Watch your student’s backpack for an informational flyer! Yeah Science!!!
Science Faire Speaking of Science, it’s never too early to begin helping your student with their Science Fair project! To that end, please have your student contact their teacher for a “Science Fair Packet.” Details, dates, and information will be contained in the packet. Also, we have learned of an outstanding resource which we wanted to share: Pinterest.com – truly, a great “idea generator” complete with visuals to assist students and parents and guardians. Please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Klicker and/or Mrs. Ordon-Bogue for more information. Happy Science Fair!!!

Newsela.com As of this writing, the Feickert Team of Teachers
enjoyed training on this innovative English/Language
Arts, web-based program: Newsela.com – That is, News
E/LA as in English/Language Arts. Simply, this on-line
newspaper is written at student’s readability level
(actually there are several levels written for each
article). The teachers will be implementing this reading,
writing, critical thinking based program in their
classrooms, mostly the intermediate-aged students.
Please visit newsela.com to check it out. Mrs. Murphy,
Mr. and Mrs. Nixon presented this comprehensive
reading program to teachers on Monday, January 4, as a
part of our staff development training.
Professional Learning Communities Training Beginning this Saturday (Yes, Saturday!) for a total of
three Saturdays this school year, a team of teachers will
be trained in how to participate in a Professional
Learning Community. The Solution Tree led by the
DuFours will train participants to be teacher leaders
focused on students and their achievement.
Collaboration with purpose will be the agenda. A
special and heart-felt thanks goes to Mrs. Headley, Mrs.
Sutton, Mrs. Thomas, Ms. Uebner, Mr. Lewis, Mr.
Larson, and Mrs. Murphy. They will be trained and, in
turn, train the team of teachers at Feickert School. We
look forward to this challenge and opportunity.
Kindergarten Registration On Wednesday, January 6, 2016, Kindergarten through
sixth grade registration begins at Feickert Elementary
School and each elementary school in the Elk Grove
Unified School District. We will be accepting
registrations for the 2016-2017 school year. Thus, if
you have or know of a child who meets the age criteria
for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten, please
inform them that registration has begun. This is a very
important day for incoming students as registration
date is very important in regards to student placement.
Please contact the school office if you should have any
questions at (916) 686-7716
P.B.I.S. – Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports In our school’s on-going efforts to explicitly instruct
school rules and reward students for following them,
our school’s P.B.I. S. team has noticed several issues
that we will be addressing over the course of the next
weeks and throughout this school year. Please read the
list below and ask your student what the rule is and
what they can do to help. Thank you!
AM - Line up or Walk the “courts”
Lunchroom – quiet voices/cleanliness
Playing safe on playground structure
Quad (Picnic area) – Non play area
Intermediate students – “Freeze” when
the bell rings
Lost and Found (we have a lot of “lost
items” – Responsible Dragons keep
track of their “stuff”! (Parents and
guardians, please visit the Lost and
Found rack in the MP room, thank you!)
Welcome Ms. Stephanie Rickett Please join the Feickert Team in welcoming Ms. Stephanie Rickett, our new Food and Nutrition Services Lead Supervisor. Ms. Rickett comes to us with many years of experience in the Elk Grove Unified School District Food and Nutrition Department. Please stop by at breakfast or lunch to say hello and give her a warm Feickert welcome.
GATE Meeting Please join us for a GATE/Accelerated meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 6:00 PM in the Library for our annual Gate/Accelerated Learner meeting. Mr. Johnson will describe the program, answer questions, and provide an overview of what students will be participating in this year. We hope to see you there! Please contact Mr. Johnson should you have any questions. Thank you.
Safe and Slow Let’s make our new year’s resolution at Feickert School
to be SAFE and drive SLOW each day on and around the
school campus. As I have stated many, many times in
the newsletter, almost 650 students are driven, walk, or
ride bicycles to our school each day. Thus, it is
incumbent upon each of us to ensure these children’s
safety. Being late, distracted, or otherwise not
attending to safe driving is simply unacceptable. Each
day, safety is of the utmost importance. Thank you for
joining us in this resolution of driving SAFE AND SLOW
each day at Feickert School. Each of the children who
attends Feickert School thanks you for your
commitment each day!
Chromebooks As you may have heard from your students, Feickert
School is currently crossing the digital divide. Currently
we maintain approximately 150 Chromebook laptop
computers. We have planned to use funding for
approximately one more class set (28) with our long
term goal being one Chromebook laptop for each
student. Obviously, our kindergarten and first grade
students may not need one for the entire school day
but our goal is to have them available for all students.
As stated in the above section NEWSELA.COM, we have
utilized these laptops for various purposes. Please find
pasted below some websites we will be using in the
coming weeks and months as we continue our
preparation for the state test (SBAC/CAASPP test). This
web-based test will be administered in April/May and
the preparation of our students is critical.
Here are some websites that have been recommended
for students so that they can practice “navigation skills”
when using the computer to take the test. You are
encouraged to have your student (especially in grades
3-6) practice at home the skills that these websites
provide:

The KINDNESS Project In keeping with the spirit of the season of giving and thanks, in addition to acknowledging the first school-wide rule “Be Kind,” students were asked to participate in “The KINDNESS Project” in December. Each child was asked to document an act of kindness in the following four areas: classroom, playground, home, and community. Adults were asked to initial and date “The KINDNESS Project” form after each act of kindness was completed. See listing below of students who showed all of us how simple acts of kindness can uplift those around us and in our community. Way to shine, Feickert Dragons!
The Royal Lunch Each month, students are selected by their teachers for
being Exemplary Dragons for being KIND, SAFE, and
RESPONSIBLE! The Royal Lunch recipients receive a
special invitation to join the King of the Dragons, Mr.
Murchison, on the stage in the multi-purpose
room. They sit at a festively decorated table complete
with name cards and certificates wrapped with the
“Royal Dragon Ring.” Their pictures are taken in front
of the castle with the King and then displayed on the
“Royal Lunch” wall in the front office. Duplicate
pictures are sent home for families to enjoy. It is a real
honor! Come into the office and check out your Royal
Dragons on display! See student recognition list below.
