Ella Pass With Flying Colours Ever since Ella Ross set foot on a plane for the very first time she knew she wanted to learn to fly. Her first flight was a present for her 12th birthday, and last week the 15-year-old Year 10 student did her very first solo flight. “I flew to Darwin with my Nan and Pop when I was seven, and when we got off I told them I wanted to be a pilot. I had to wait until I was 12 though to start flying les- sons. After my first lesson I was even more keen.” Ella did her first lessons with Dale Red- fern, chief flying officer of the Parkes Rec- reational Aviation Centre, and remembers how she never said a word for the first six lessons. As she stood proudly next to the two-seat- er Flight Design MC plane she flew all by herself, her current instructor Brett Preisig of the Parkes Aero Club praised her hard work and diligence. “Ella is a great student who is very thorough and business-like when she operates a plane.” Ella is not daunted by the ‘flight path’ ahead, which includes the last of five ex- ams she has to sit, building up more hours of solo flights and training to get her pas- senger and navigation endorsements and flight certificate. She might take her sister as her first pas- senger. “I think my mum will be too scared.” Ella is not yet certain where the flying will lead her after school, but she thinks fly- ing solo around the Australia and even the world “would be pretty cool”! Under Level 3 water restrictions, which started last Saturday for some of the smaller communities in the Parkes Shire, hand-held hoses are allowed.

Level 3 Water Restrictions For B-Section Pipeline

Level 3 Water restrictions on the Parkes Shire Council controlled section of the Forbes to Tottenham water supply system started last Saturday, 1st February. The 130km B-section pipeline, which runs from Forbes to Tottenham via Gunning-bland, Bogan Gate, Trundle and Tullamore, is currently struggling to meet the demands induced by the ongoing drought. Parkes Shire Council’s General Manager, Kent Boyd said: “Significant extraction from standpipes, particularly along the Parkes Shire section, has meant that at times sup-ply to communities within the Lachlan Shire has been almost completely exhausted. Lachlan Shire Council have been forced to cart water by truck to Albert Reservoir to ensure basic supply to their consumers

further along the pipeline. “With Tottenham on Level 4 restrictions, it’s only fair and reasonable the Parkes Shire section of the supply system moves to Level 3.” Under Level 3 Water restrictions, domes-tic users can water with hand-held hoses, soaker hoses, micro sprays and drip sys-tems between the hours of 6am and 9am; and 6pm and 9pm on alternate days: For odd numbered properties (1,3,5 etc) the days are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. For even numbered properties (2,4,6 etc) the days are Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. No watering is permitted on Mondays. Water-ing systems and non-fixed sprinklers are not permitted.

Services, Dr Shannon Nott said the innova-tive model of care met community expecta-tions for continued service delivery in rural areas. “The primary purpose of this service is to provide local support for local medical and nursing staff – it is not a replacement for our staff. It’s an innovative model of care which aims to set the standard in rural and remote virtual care across Australia and address the longstanding challenges of re-cruitment and retention across many rural and remote sites across NSW. The 2019-20 budget for WNSWLHD is $979 million - an increase of $35 million. WNSWLHD will also benefit from the NSW Government’s $2.8 billion commitment to recruit a record 8,300 frontline health staff, including 5,000 additional nurses and midwives.

New Standpipe Usage Scheme: A new standpipe usage scheme started on Tues-day with no charge for water up to 25kL per week to approved farming enterprises. Any additional approved farming enterprises usage will be charged at a reduced rate of $3.50 per kilolitre. All standpipe users must reapply for standpipe access. For more information about the new Parkes Shire Standpipe Usage Scheme visit www.parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Cheney Park: Work on the Cheney Park amenities refurbishment has started. Fund-ed by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, the project includes a reconfiguration of the facility to include a separate control room and stor-age space, a new unisex disabled access toilet and compliant ambulant toilets in both male and female change rooms, fresh paint of facilities throughout, new kitchen appliances, and a new PA system.

Shop Parkes Gift Cards: In its first year of operation, the Shop Parkes Gift Card Pro-gram has become one of the most success-ful community gift card programs in NSW. From December 2018 to December 2019, over $200,000 was loaded onto the Shop Parkes Gift Cards with over $100,000 of that spent in local businesses throughout the year. Businesses wishing to participate in the program are encouraged to contact Council on 6861 2333 or [email protected].

Innovative Model Of Care: Western NSW residents will benefit from a brand new Virtual Rural Generalist Service (VRGS) providing 24 hour virtual and face-to-face medical services across the region. Eight-een new doctors will take on roles with the VRGS, which will provide consultations via video conferencing with patients. Western NSW Local Health District (WN-SWLHD) Rural Health Director of Medical

Work at Cheney Park has commenced to upgrade ameni-ties.

See author Kathleen Collier at the Parkes Library on Friday, 14th February at 10:30am.

Maree Tanswell: Capturing the moment in that tiny little frame by zooming in from the big picture. I particularly enjoy getting candid shots of people and not so much staged photos.

Members of the Parkes Camera Club answered the question: What do you enjoy about photography?

Steve Ostini: I like capturing the moment or a scene. I also enjoy the process of taking photos and editing them.

Frances Thornton: I enjoy landscape and macro photography and anything that cannot move or run away from me. I like to challenge myself to try out different aspects of photography.

LLS Rates Waived For Farmers For Second YearThe State Government will once again waive all Local Land Services (LLS) rates for this year to provide relief for farmers go-ing through devastating bushfires and crip-pling drought. Around 130,000 rates notices were sent to NSW ratepayers last month, however, as part of the NSW Government’s drought re-lief package, they are not payable for the period. This includes the general rates and rates for animal health and pests, the meat indus-try levy and costs for routine stock moving permit and stock identification. Rates notices will show the usual compo-nents, but amounts shown will not be pay-able. You do not need to apply for this exemp-tion as it will be automatically applied to landholders. The NSW Government will compensate Local Land Services for the lost rates rev-

enue, to enable staff to continue their sup-port during these challenging times. Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said during these difficult times, every little bit of support counted and that waiving LLS rates would help reduce the cost and psy-chological burden on hard-working farmers. The Minister said waiving LLS rates again was just one aspect of the Government’s $3.9 billion drought assistance package, which also includes cost of living pressure relief and subsidies for the transport of fod-der. “We are committed to providing our pri-mary producers with the best support pos-sible to see them through the worst drought in living memory.” To find out more about available assis-tance measures and eligibility criteria, visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/climate-and-emergen-cies/droughthub or phone the NSW Rural Assistance Authority on 1800 678 593.

What I Wish I KnewThe GRDC Emerging Agros Network is designed to offer newcomers to the grains sector an opportunity to boost their profes-sional skills, as well as connect with some of the industry’s most respected consult-ants, farm advisers and researchers. There will be a network event on 25th February in Dubbo at the Dubbo RSL Me-morial Club from 5:10-6:10pm. The free session is open to everyone. GRDC Senior Regional Manager – North,

Gillian Meppem said the initiative aimed to provide critical ‘soft skill’ development, link recent graduates with relevant research re-sources and offer insights into how experi-enced advisers handled challenging situa-tions and seasons. For more information please email [email protected]. The ses-sions are free but please RSVP for catering purposes via www.seedbedmedia.com.au/agronomists.

Rain And StormsOn Sunday a severe thunderstorm and strong winds came through certain parts of Parkes bringing up to 38mm to some and only dust to others. It was very patchy with about 17mm falling in one part and nothing only 2km away. (Photo: Michelle Nash taken in Nash Street.)

Henry KrossHow old are you? Nine years old.

How long have you lived in or around Parkes, and what do you like about liv-ing here? I was born in Parkes.

Where do you go to school and what year are you in? I go to Parkes East Pub-lic School and am in Year 5. My teacher is Mrs Robinson.

What is your favourite after school ac-tivity? Playing sport - I play squash, soc-cer, hockey, cricket and touch footy.

What is your favourite food and movie? My favourite food is anything caramel – ice cream, cheesecake, milkshakes, cookies. My favourite movie is Spiderman.

What music do you listen to? My favour-ite songs are ‘I’m Blue’ and ‘Dance Mon-key’, but I like any music.

What do you want to do when you grow up? I really want to be a professional squash player and play at the Common-wealth Games in singles and doubles. I would love to play squash in Egypt, be-cause they have a court made all out of glass in front of the pyramids.

If you could have a super power what would it be? I would like to be able to go through walls and be invisible. I would be able to play the best pranks with these powers!

Tell us an interesting fact about your-self. I love squash. I am Number 1 in NSW for Under 11 boys and Number 3 in Aus-tralia. In 2020, I want to win my third NSW State title (for a hattrick) and win an Aus-tralian title, and make the NSW Under 13 boys team.

Save The Date To VaccinateA new app will help ensure children receive vital vaccinations in time for the start of the new school year. NSW Health is urging parents and carers to ensure children are vaccinated on time and has warned vaccinations shouldn’t be delayed even if a child has a minor illness. Dr Jeremy McAnulty, Executive Director, Health Protection NSW encouraged par-ents and carers to download the free Save the Date to Vaccinate app. “The app reminds parents and carers what vaccinations their child needs and when they’re due, in line with the NSW Im-munisation Schedule. The app sends au-tomatic reminders to your phone, making

it easier to schedule immunisation appoint-ments, and have a record of vaccinations your children have received. On-time vaccination and overall partici-pation in childhood immunisation programs continues to improve in NSW, with 94.5% of children fully vaccinated by five years of age in the past 12 months compared with 90.8% in 2012. Protecting children from potentially dead-ly diseases is a key priority for the NSW Government, which has invested approxi-mately $130 million in the 2019-20 Immu-nisation Program budget, including Com-monwealth and state vaccines.

Community Donations Light Up Parkes RFS’ Heart

The Parkes Headquarters Rural Fire Ser-vice received donations of almost $7,000 this week from the community. The Parkes Leagues Club raised a stag-gering $6,726.25 during the Parkes Elvis Festival. Club Manager Luke Malam said local patrons and from afar helped to fill buckets with their donations of coins and notes. Luke said the coins weighed so much it took a car ride to the bank to have them counted. “Donating to the local Parkes Headquar-ters Brigade was at the top of our list, as it means the local firefighters can continue the great work they do, protecting not only our community but those around us,” said Luke. The Leagues Club has always been com-mitted to supporting the Parkes Communi-ty and donates in excess of $50,000 each year to local sporting groups, charities and community organisations. The second donation came from Cen-

trelink staff. They love a mufti day, espe-cially during the Elvis Festival, and raised $142 for a cause they thought was very important. This brought the total amount donated to Parkes Headquarters this week to $6,868.25. Parkes Headquarters Captain Vicki Wil-liams and Senior Deputy Captain Steve Chester could not thank both organisations enough. “Donations from our community mean so much,” said Vicki. “These dona-tions will be wisely spent on the brigade’s new fire station to create a place that mem-bers can enjoy between incident callouts, and to assist with the training of current and new members.” Parkes Headquarters members also col-lected donations during the Elvis Festival over two nights in Cooke Park and raised over $3,000. This amount was donated to Jenolan Caves Brigade as they had lost their station during the fires whilst serving their community.

Unexpected Valentine’s Date IdeasWhether you and your significant other have been together for years or just a little while, the ultimate Valentine’s Day gift is time spent together. Why not consider doing an out-of-the-box activity this year?

Take a hike: Sometimes it takes a tourist to make us remember the ridiculously beauti-ful nature that’s in our backyard. If you add a picnic to the mix, your date will love it.

Brewery or wine tasting: There are plenty of opportunities available in our backyard for a great day of tasting.

Challenge each other: Spend a couple of hours playing Monopoly or any other board game that takes your fancy.

A themed dinner and movie night at home: Watching Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck fall in love in Roman Holiday is definitely more satisfying when accompa-nied by a big plate of homemade spaghetti and meatballs.

A poetry reading: Check out the love letters and poems of the best writers at the Parkes Library, open a bottle of wine and take turns reading each other your favourites.

Karaoke: If singing is your poetry, celebrate your chemistry by singing classic couples duets, or listen to your favourite love songs.

An Escape Room: By now, most people know about this activity and have done it with friends, but how about doing it as a couple? There is an Escape room in Dubbo!

A sunset (or sunrise) watch: Plan your day to watch the sunset from a special place.

Glamping: The date doesn’t have to end at sunset. Why not take a break from your reg-ular routine and spend the night with some nature? Cozy up in a tent with your favourite snacks.

Stay home and make cocktails: There should be some form of food too, of course, but why not spend an evening attempting to recreate your favourite cocktail.

Do yoga together: Join a class and con-sider it couple’s therapy without the label.

Easy come easy go: If you just want to spend quality time with each other without a fuss, make sure to book a table for the special Valentine’s dinner at the Parkes Ser-vices Club!

PARKES SPORT

Tennis For Teen Girls

Ash Barty had a great summer of tennis and her tag is #playforyou, so in Term 1 Parkes Tennis are encouraging all teenage girls to get outside, get active and enjoy so-cial sporting interaction. Research and evidence shows that in-stead of running towards sport and the multitude of physical, social and emotional benefits it brings, teenage girls are walk-ing away. We know taking a break from the stresses of study, and the screens, is vital for everyone’s wellbeing. So there’s many benefits for joining the Girls Only Tennis Program for 12-16 year olds. They can be-long in an environment and culture that is inviting, friendly and makes them feel com-fortable. It’s non-competitive, stress-free, fun and social and offers everyone activi-ties both on and off-court with the aim to give the girls an opportunity for social inter-action, improve their self-confidence and enjoy some great positive tennis and life experiences. These girls may have come through the HotShots program a few years ago then dropped out, played at school sport or wanted to play and didn’t have the chance to. Currajong Swimming Carnival Keeps On Growing

A highlight on the Currajong Disability Ser-vices calendar is its annual All Abilities Swimming Carnival to be held at Parkes Aquatic Centre on 4th March. Participants from Orange, Temora, Trangie, Dubbo, Cowra, Forbes, Bathurst and Parkes will compete in this flagship event. Last year’s event saw 120 entrants, and interest shown so far indicates this year will be bigger and better. Organiser Indigo Kriedemann said the day was a real highlight on the regional disability calendar and many were already looking forward to it. “It’s a great event that brings together people far and wide within the disability community,” Indigo said. “The day keeps growing and going from strength to strength. This year is already looking like a bumper carnival!” In previous years Currajong has often dominated, however Live Better from Or-ange got the chocolates last year, despite sterling efforts in the pool by Ian Kaupke and Tim McDonald.

As Indigo points out, the day is not about who wins, but who is having a go, and “everyone coming together to connect and meet new friends and old ones”. “It’s also a real social outing, and many of us get a buzz out of it!” To register, call 02 6883 4713 or email [email protected] to confirm your organisation’s place in this blue chip event.
