6th Grade News

Mrs. Bradford, Mr. Ebers, Ms. Niebaum, Ms. Oberembt, Mr. Phelps, Ms. Stromgren,

Ms. Kohler and Mr. Weber

SOCIAL STUDIES - Mr. Ebers and Mr. Phelps In November, students started their intro to Economics unit by exploring the difference between needs and wants. In December, students will study Capitalism in the United States as well as the importance of personal finance. Students will explore budgeting and the different options related to savings.

MATH- Ms. Niebaum Fractions, fractions, fractions! Have you seen the factor stacks method? Ask your child about it! We start out learning all the parts needed to work with fractions and then put them all together to do operations with frac-tions. A few letters (variables) have been added to prob-lems to start the introduction to algebra. We will soon be working on one step equations.

PRE-CONCEPTS - Ms. Niebaum and Mr. Weber

During this school year, your child will participate in the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). MOEMS is a nonprofit public founda-tion which provides opportunities for children to engage in creative problem solving activities which develop a child’s ability to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occa-sionally to be ingenious. The Olympiad goals for children are for them to: l. develop enthusiasm for problem solving and mathe-matics 2. deepen understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen ability to use these concepts 3. consider concepts that they might not otherwise encounter 4. enrich experiences in intellectually stimulating and significant mental activities 5. build a stronger foundation for assessments and for future mathematics studies At the end of the year awards, students who competed in the Olympiad will be recognized for the achievements they made as compared to others nationally who also compet-ed. Students have completed the unit on relationships be-tween fractions, decimals, and percents. Be looking for examples of each in everyday life to share with your stu-dent. We have also done the operations on integers. Next, we will begin the unit on solving one and two-step equations.

SCIENCE - Mr. Phelps and Ms. Kohler Six graders have been working on becoming an expert on an ecosystem of their choice presentation since the mid-dle of November. Students can determine their own grade by selecting the number of points they wish to earn on each topic they are required to cover in their presenta-tion/slideshow. Students must use Google Classroom to receive communication from either Mr. Phelps or Ms. Kohler and to share their projects. Visit Google calendar to check when each topic is to be completed. The whole project will wrap up in January. On Tuesday, December 6th, we will be visiting the Great Barrier Reef in Australia via videoconferencing. Because of time difference we will hold the conference at 6 and 7:30 P.M, which translates to late morning for the Aussies! There will be an online sign-up for both sessions about a week in advance. Par-ents are encouraged to attend with their 6th grade stu-dent. Because of limited space please do not bring other family members.

LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE - Ms. Thomas and Mrs. Espinoza

Hopefully, everyone is speaking a little French at their houses. Students have learned a few greetings and con-versation questions, as well as colors and numbers. Moo-dle has many songs and different ways to practice French. They will need to be able to write spell French words from their greeting pages as well as answer simple questions like How are you, How old are you? What is your name? What month is your birthday?

7th Grade News

Mrs. Bradford, Mr. Bischof, Mrs. Randall, Mr. Breitkreutz,

Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Klein, Ms. Kohler and Mr. Weber

LANGUAGE ARTS - Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Randall

Students are finishing the parts of speech before winter break: pronouns, adverbs, conjunctions, and interjections. Spelling and mug shot worksheets and tests and quizzes will finish out the calendar year also. Please remind your child to use the resources available to check home-work and study for tests and quizzes.

READING- Ms. Oberembt and Mrs. Bradford Students will enjoy novels in literature circle groups throughout the month of December. Each group will read a different novel together while focusing on the elements of fiction within the book. The second quarter AR goal ends on December 22nd.

LANGUAGE ARTS - Mrs. Bradford, Mr. Ebers, and Ms. Stromgren Students will be working on descriptive writing in detail for six weeks in preparation for the district writing assessment in January. You can encourage your child to practice us-ing the graphic organizers and revision strategies that we have been working on.

SPANISH - Ms.Thomas and Mrs. Espinoza This group of students is currently studying vocabulary that has to do with their classes and schedule. As stu-dents practice their vocab at home, please have them try to form sentences with their flashcards. Also, this is the chapter where students start the process of conjugating verbs. They will be asked to access a website called pigquiz.com to practice conjugating verbs. So, if you hear them yelling at the computer, that means they are enjoying the pigquiz experience!

8th Grade News Mrs. Klein, Mrs. Kammerer, Ms. Christie, Mrs. Hultman, Mrs. Semin, Ms. Stromgren, Mr. Weber, Mr. Breitkreutz, and Mr. Schutt

LANGUAGE ARTS - Mr. Schutt and Ms. Stromgren The month of December is a time of change, not only for the weather but also Language Arts. During the past couple of weeks students have been sharpening their grammar skills. They have been reviewing verbs, adverbs, interjec-tions, and conjunctions, never an easy task. In December, students will become even better writers. A big emphasis in December will be put on text dependent analysis. As this is taking place, students will be reading articles and citing infor-mation for those articles in order to write an essay according to whatever their prompt is asking them to write about. A large emphasis will be put on explaining how their cited piec-es of evidence help back up their claim throughout their entire

paper.

PRE - ALGEBRA - Mr. Weber and Mrs. Klein

In Pre-Algebra we have been using the Distributive Prop-erty and learning how to combine Like Terms. We are also focusing on the important skills used in solving equa-tions and keeping our equations balanced! We will be solving many types of multi-step equations into Decem-ber. After that, we will learn how to solve inequalities.

MATH—Mrs. Klein

In Math 7 we are working with rational numbers and have been putting our division skills to work to find out whether certain rational numbers are terminating or repeating deci-mals. We will spend much of December adding, subtract-ing, multiplying and dividing all types of fraction and mixed numbers. As we close first semester, we will begin simpli-fying algebraic expressions and using the distributive property.

READING - Mrs. Randall, Mrs. Nelson, and Mrs. Bradford

Students will be reading various realistic fiction short sto-ries while reviewing the elements of fiction. Many stu-dents have not met AR goals that are due Monday, De-cember 19th, so please make sure that reading is a prior-ity at home during the month of December.

SCIENCE—Mr. Breitkreutz and Ms. Kohler December finds us advancing through our Life Science unit on Human Body Systems. We've made our way through skeletal, muscular, integumentary, and digestive systems. We'll continue this month by exploring the ex-cretory/urinary, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, and endocrine systems, as well as having a discussion on vestigial structures of the body. The nervous system and the DCA test will most likely occur after Winter Break.

WORLD HISTORY - Mr. Bischof and Mr. Breitkreutz After history students finish up studying the Middle Ages in Europe, students will study the Age of Exploration by sail-ing across an uncharted sea in search of a City of Gold, in a computer simulation called "Geography Search".

READING - Ms. Christie and Ms. Stromgren In December, we will start our nonfiction unit before the winter holiday. Please make a note that AR goals for this quarter are due December 14, and that at least one AR book for this quar-ter needs to be a nonfiction book. Finally, the website for vo-cabulary review and practice games is as follows: http://www.prestwickhouse.com/articles.aspx?id=48.

AMERICAN HISTORY - Mrs. Hultman and Mrs. Semin

This month, we'll continue to study the first four presidents and what accomplishments and struggles they had during their presidencies. We will start looking at "Manifest Desti-ny" (acquiring land that we call the continental United States) as well. We will have a District Common Assessment over "Manifest Destiny" hopefully before winter break. As always, do not hesitate to e-mail or call us with any questions you may have.

SCIENCE - Mrs. Kammerer and Mr. Breitkreutz

Though December is a short month, it will be packed with Science activities. Having transitioned into the month wrapping up our Earth Science unit on rocks and fossils, students will now be exploring energy. This unit builds on topics from 6th and 7th grade as students learn about the various forms of energy and how they transfer, including the conservation of energy. This short unit will conclude with a district common assessment (8.2.3) before Winter Break.

CHORUS - Mrs. Ballou, ERMS Vocal Music Instructor and Mrs. Foley, Accompanist

Congratulations to all of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade choir members on a wonderful, multi-cultural concert. I was very proud of the many musical elements that each ensemble showcased and also of each students' concert etiquette. Way to go singers!!! In class, all grade levels are prepping for a District Com-mon Assessment over rhythm. Kids are working on identi-fying patterns that they hear, writing rhythms they hear and performing rhythm patterns. 8th grade is also starting music for our next concert on Tuesday, Feb. 7th at ESHS. 6th and 7th grade choir students are working on solo/ small group projects. Congratulations also go out to Quinn Knispel and Charlie Campbell for being selected to the UNO Honor Choir. This is a big honor that will culminate with a performance at UNO on Friday, Jan. 6th.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - Kyle Dreessen and Derick Bluford, Band TA A huge thank you to all the students and parents as our October Concert was a huge success. All the band stu-dents worked very hard, and have come so far since the beginning of the year. I am very excited for all the work ahead to see how much we can grow throughout the year. Currently we are focusing on some fundamentals to help us in performing our music through the rest of the year. Saturday Jan. 7th is the Southside School of Jazz, which is a required performance for all Jazz Band Mem-bers. Congratulations to Lily Schied Lexi Borkowski, Dan Wal-ters, Charlie Whalen, Elizabeth Watzke, and Charlie Camp-bell for auditioning for the NSBA 8th Grade All-State Band. All of the students had very good recordings. Elizabeth Watzke and Charlie Campbell were both selected for the group which will meet on January 14th in Kearney, NE. Is your musician looking to increase their skill level? Pri-vate lessons are always a great way to improve as a musi-cian. Many of our band students have taken private les-sons over the years, and the improvement is quite noticea-ble. If your musician is interested auditioning for all-state, or honor bands in the future, or they just want to improve I would highly recommend private lessons. If you are inter-ested please ask Mr. Dreessen for a list of recommended instructors. Coming up on January 20th, all of our bands will be per-forming with the EVV Bands, and the ESHS Band at a bas-ketball game. The 6th Grade will perform during the Girls Varsity Game, and the 7th and 8th Grade will perform dur-ing the Boys Varsity Game. Times will be announced at a later date.

MATH—Mrs Semin (Pre Algebra/Algebra) and Mr. Weber (Pre Algebra) Pre-Algebra: Students have been continuing with the Number Sense Unit. Students just completed the Number Sense unit covering exponents, scientific notation, and divisibility. We are now working on converting between fractions, decimals, and percent numbers. They will be finishing up the entire Number Sense unit this month and will then move into solving equations. Algebra: Students just finished learning about inequali-ties. We worked on solving linear inequalities, graphing the solutions on number lines, and graphing inequalities on a coordinate plane. We are now working on Systems of Equations. Students are learning how to solve systems of equations in a variety of different ways: graphing, sub-stitution, and elimination. We will wrap up this semester with a final covering all the content we have learned this year. Feel free to email if you have any questions!

STUDENT COUNCIL - Mrs. Bradford Student council just finished up a successful Pastry Puffins sale! We also kicked off spirit week on November 28. We will be collecting toiletry items for local families in need in support of a Womenade project in December. Please stay tuned so that you can help our Elkhorn families!

SPANISH - Ms. Thomas and Mrs. Espinoza

This group of 8th graders should be really proud of the improvements they are making as the year progress-es. Currently, they are studying a chapter about family members, party activities, possessive adjectives and “boot” verbs. They should be using their notebooks often to complete assignments for this chapter and doing many activities on moodle and pigquiz.com.

H.A.L.E. - Mrs. Thoreen and Mrs. Faulconer, TA The winter winds are biting at our backs, yet the ERMS HALE students are rolling in the warmth of knowledge. The 8th, 7th, and 6th grade Quiz Bowl teams are off and quizzing at their first city-wide Quiz Bowl tour-ney. We wish the kids the best of luck and hope that all their hard work and study pay off. Along, with Quiz Bowl, there is also the National Geography Bee in December. The top Geo Winner will compete at the city-wide competition. Again, may the best geography versed student win! A highly gifted group of 8th grade math students took the AMC Math Test, their results will become known in the new year and we will see who reigns top in the field of mathematics. To round out the last few weeks, several blended grade level groups stud-ied several novels such as: The Compound, Unwind, The Secret Benedict Society, and And Then There Were None. To round out the month, some HALE kids became a little more tech savvy by attending the TechAcademy at Pe-ter Kiewit’s UNO facility and learned all about the world of IT and how it is linked to almost every field around any-more. Lastly, some biology versed students took to lab work and dissected sharks after attending a shark academy zoo class at the Henry Doorly Zoo. It was a great quarter in HALE!

SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY Winter weather in Nebraska can make driving difficult and create unsafe conditions. Thank you for following our traffic plan and putting students safety first. Please use good judgment and practice patience when dropping off and picking up students. Student safety comes first!

ERMS WRESTLING

It’s never too late to learn a new sport! The ERMS Wrestling program has coached many novice wrestlers to successful seasons. Our goal is to have ERMS students learn the sport of wrestling and have fun competing in the world’s oldest sport. Middle school is a great time to pick up athletic skills of wres-tling where kids of any size can compete. Elkhorn has enjoyed very successful wrestling teams over the years and it’s never too late to get started. Almost every state wrestling tourna-ment qualifier and state medalist in Elkhorn South High School's history has at one time wrestled for Elkhorn Ridge. There are many benefits of wrestling in the develop-ment of overall athleticism and mental toughness that translate well into most other sports. Middle School is the time to try something new.

An info/sign-up meeting for potential wrestlers will be held after school on Tuesday, December 20th (There will be announce-ments to remind the students.) There, students will receive an informational brochure about the ERMS Wrestling program for each student-athlete to bring home. I can also email a copy of the brochure upon request. There will also be a preseason meeting on Thursday, January 5th from 3:30-4:30pm in the wrestling room to discuss expectations for student-athletes on the wrestling team. Wrestlers will receive a calendar to bring home highlighting our practice schedule and competi-tions. The first official full practice is scheduled for Monday, January 9th. Wrestlers should have workout clothes and a towel, and be prepared to practice until 5:00pm (picked up be-tween 5:20-5:30pm outside the Boys locker room door). If you have questions before the season starts, please don’t hesitate to email me, [email protected]

Matt Breitkreutz ERMS Head Wrestling Coach

ATTENTION: PARENTS/GRANDPARENTS RELATIVES/ NEIGHBORS

Middle school parents interested in speaking at our 8th grade Career Day on the afternoon of January 27, please contact Mrs. Klein, Guidance Counselor ([email protected]). The career session is 30 minutes in length with 15-20 students.

SCIENCE BOWL

Science Bowl is a fun, fast-paced, tournament-style aca-demic competition that challenges and recognizes stu-dents’ knowledge of science and mathematics, open to all students.

Elkhorn Ridge Middle School has been competing for the previous ten years with great success. With 18 teams having competed, 15 of the teams have qualified for the state tournament, all finishing in the Top 12. Nine of those teams finished in the Top 6 and the “A” team has finished 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 4th, respectively, in 6 of the last 8 years. ERMS will most likely have 2 teams competing at the 13th Annual Nebraska Middle School Science Bowl competition on Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at Wayne State College. Each team will consist of 5 mem-bers who earn a spot on a team based on performance and participation. Participation practices have been held before and after school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. A final Qualifying Quiz will be given in the middle of December to those students interested in mak-ing the team. Those not earning a spot on the two teams will still be allowed to attend the state tournament for support. Please direct questions/comments to: Mr. Breitkreutz
