Youth Summer Reading Program Reading Takes You Everywhere! June 11 – July 27 The Youth Services Department at the Elk Grove Village Public Library is celebrating the power of books to take us to new places, to teach us about different cultures, and to make our imagination soar! Programs, games and prizes will all be part of the fun! Details and a complete schedule will be available in the Youth Services Department. Opening Day Monday, June 11 from 9:30am – 9pm Youth Services will be giving out a special “Reading Takes You Everywhere!” tote bag to every Read-to-me, Reader, and Young Adult who registers for the Summer Reading Program on Opening Day! Come into the library, join the program and pick out something to read. Weather permitting, spend some time outside on our Story Trail. Follow the story pages and our book will lead you on a walk around the library! The Elk Grove Park District will also be here from 9:30am-4:30pm. If you are here during those hours, visit their table, show their staff your bag, and they will enter you into a drawing to win two daily admission passes to Rainbow Falls or Pirate’s Cove! Explore our Forest Preserves – Summer Series @ EGVPLOne of our greatest community treasures is Busse Woods, part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County (FPCC). With walking and biking trails, fishing, boat rentals and picnic groves, Busse Woods provides more than 3,500 acres of nature to enjoy. Meet some of the experts who maintain the forest preserves and learn how you can not only enjoy but help take care of this wonderful natural resource. These programs are a collaboration between EGVPL, Living Green in Elk Grove, and the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

R Wildlife of the Forest Preserves Wednesday, June 13 from 7-8:30pmCoyotes, raccoons and skunks…oh my! Chris Anchor, Senior Wildlife Biologist for the FPCC, will talk about the many aspects of wildlife in the forest preserves including deer, coyotes, raccoons, otters and skunks. Chris will answer your questions about how to deal with wildlife that wander into our neighborhoods.

Mike Feldman, Fisheries Technician for the FPCC, will discuss how the Fisheries section manages over 40 lakes for recreational fishing. He’ll provide specific information on our own Busse Reservoir. R Canvas KidsEntering grades 3 & 4Mondays: June 18-July 23 from 4:30-5:15pmNeed an excuse to express your artistic creativity? Then Canvas Kids is the program for you. Create using different artistic techniques and mediums. Space is limited to 20.

R Read to the DogEntering grades 2-6Wednesdays: June 20-July 25 from 1-1:15, 1:20-1:35, 1:40-1:55 or 2-2:15Travel the reading highway with a Rainbow Animal Assisted Therapy dog! Children will be given the opportunity to read in a positive, non-threatening environment that encourages the love of reading by partnering with a willing, attentive, and non-judgmental therapy dog. The reading sessions are 15 minutes per reader. Parents/adult caregivers will not be allowed in the room during the reading session. Complete Rainbow guidelines are available in Youth Services. In person registration by a parent or legal guardian is required for this program and begins June 2nd. For children entering 2nd-6th grade. Each child may sign up for a maximum of 3 sessions.

Space is limited to four children/15-minute session. No session July 4.

R Book Buddies Entering grades 1-3Wednesday, June 20 from 3:30-4pm or 4-4:30pmShare a book! Read aloud and discuss the story with one of our Jr. TAG volunteers. Please register for one session only. Space is limited to 10 students/session.

R Tie-Dye T-shirts All agesThursday, June 21 @ 10am, 11am, 1pm or 2pmWhere will your creativity take you? Roberta Fahey of Roberta’s Creative Creations will be sharing her squeeze-bottle method of tie-dying t-shirts. You will need to bring a white, 100% cotton t-shirt that has been pre-washed and dried without fabric softener. Roberta will show you how to rubber-band your shirt in different ways to create a unique look. Your shirt will go home in a zippered plastic bag, along with instructions for the initial washing and care. Please note: this class will take place on this date, rain or shine! Please register for one session only. Space is limited to 30/class.

$R Babysitters’ Training CourseAges 10-16Monday, July 9 and Wednesday, July 11 from 1-5pmThis 8 hour class is taught by a certified teacher. Fun activities, small group discussions, role playing and teacher led discussions allow students to actively participate in class. This class is designed for ages 10-16 who are interested in babysitting, but is also valuable for those children beginning to say at home alone. A non-refundable fee of $10 will be due at registration in the library to cover a student reference book, along with other resource materials. Bring a lunch and a large doll to class. Space is limited to 25.

Shredding EventSaturday, June 23 from 9-11amThe Library is offering this document destruction event as a courtesy to residents who have sensitive documents to recycle, such as medical records, tax forms, bank statements, etc. Paper documents must be brought to the event in either paper shopping bags or cardboard boxes. NO PLASTIC BAGS, please. There is a limit of 2 file-size boxes and 4 paper shopping bags per vehicle. Paper clips and staples do not need to be removed, but please remove binder clips. Workers will help take paper out of vehicles and placed into toter carts. The documents will then be loaded into a shredding truck on site. The paper will be cross-shredded, baled, and recycled.
