Elevate Others • Fall 2016 Conference • Toastmasters District 53

Fall 2016

Fellow Toastmasters in District 53,

Welcome to your district conference: Elevate Others. Over the weekend, enjoy the opportunity to hone your skills as a communicator and leader, and to extend your knowledge by networking with your fellow members from around the district. Friendships will be made and renewed as you celebrate each other’s successes, find new ways to tackle common challenges, and hear speakers who will entertain and inspire you.

Ensure you get full value from this opportunity by participating in the atmosphere of fun, excitement and stimulation the conference offers. Most importantly, when you return to your respective clubs, share your experiences with members who could not attend the conference. Remember, knowledge is only worth something when you share it with others. Please make a point of remembering the members who could not make it and make them feel part of the event.

Yours in Toastmasters,

Mike Storkey, DTM International President, 2016-2017 Toastmasters International

Steve Chen, DTMInternational Director, 2015-2017 Toastmasters International, Region 9

Dear Fellow Toastmasters and Friends:

I am thrilled and honored to send District 53 greetings on the occasion of your 2016 Fall Conference at UMass Amherst!

Over the past several years I have had the pleasure and privilege of attending your conferences and to meet with many of you. It is my distinct pleasure today to congratulate you on yet another very successful conference − as well as to wish each one of you an outstanding year of personal achievements.

You will find that this is a wonderful gathering to meet with new Toastmasters and share in their excitement for our program and speakers. It is also an excellent opportunity to renew friendships and discuss their progress and development within our Toastmasters program. There is much to share, I am sure. Additionally, a conference also provides time for fellowship and celebration of your district’s achievements, which are many.

May District 53 continue to provide a rich learning environment where you and your members work toward growth and achievement by ELEVATING OTHERS ever further.

I especially appreciate the countless hours of thought and preparations that have gone into this conference by your District leaders and conference committee members. As a result, you are in for a great learning experience.

Have fun, my friends!!

Sincerely,

Steve Chen International Director, Region 9

Elevate Others • Fall 2016 Conference • Toastmasters District 53

Welcome to the District 53 2016 Fall Conference!

We are excited that you are here to experience Toastmasters outside of your home club environment! Our conference theme is “Elevate Others”. None of us would be where we are today without the help of others. Each of us can remember someone in our lives who taught us, motivated us and lead us in such a way that we reached a higher level of skill and experience.

In a 2013 Forbes article, Dov Seidman states that “The most effective leaders today inspire a sense of purpose and values through their actions, elevating others in all that they do.”

How can we become individuals that positively influence and inspire others? How can we pass on what has been given to us, and create opportunities for others?

It starts with the desire to serve others. The Toastmasters community is a great place to learn and practice the art of elevating others through service. The District 53 fall conference team has done a great job structuring the programs to help equip you to be that type of leader.

Our Region 9 international director Steve Chen will touch on the “Core Four”, a discussion of four core values that leaders with character possess. The 2000 world champion of public speaking Ed Tate will pass along practical tips on how to influence and lead others without a title. Our educational sessions focus on giving uplifting feedback to drive improved performance, learning improvisation skills to help others shine, and multiplying leaders within an organization.

The District 53 Hall of Fame will recognize the tremendous accomplishments of our members during 2015-2016. Every member helped our district achieve Select Distinguished status last year! Both the evaluation and the humorous contests are unique opportunities to observe and learn valuable skills from talented Toastmasters. The art of encouragement and the ability to find humor in different situations are so important when elevating others.

You can be a person of influence, and help others reach a higher level of skill and experience! Take advantage of all our District 53 Fall Conference has to offer. Network, learn, and be inspired!

We hope you have fun, enjoy the experience, and leave motivated to elevate others in your circle of influence!

Sincerely,

Your District 53 Trio

Dave Pelland, DTMFC2016 Conference Co-Chairs

Welcome Conference Attendees!

On behalf of the FC2016 conference planning team, welcome to the District 53 Fall Conference! We’re looking forward to a great weekend packed with fun, educational and networking events that will help you enhance your leadership and communications skills.

We’re pleased to welcome back International Director Steve Chen, who is no stranger to District 53, and that this conference marks the first time Ed Tate, 2000 World Champion of Public Speaking, is visiting a District 53 conference. Both have interesting sessions lined up for us.

We and the planning team chose “Elevate Others” as our theme to reflect the importance of this often-overlooked elements of leadership — understanding you cannot do everything by yourself. Successful leadership depends on enlisting others to share in your vision, and encouraging others to take on the challenge of leadership.

We’re also excited about UMass Amherst hosting our conference for the first time. Our spacious meeting rooms are close together, the setting and scenery are attractive, and wait until it’s time for meals — The Princeton Review ranked UMass Amherst No. 1 for best campus food in the nation, and UMass has been in the top three schools nationally since 2013.

With thanks to the planning team and the District 53 senior team for their contributions to the 2016 Fall Conference, we hope you enjoy the weekend.

Morning Breakout Sessions (11:30 AM – 12:15 PM)

Evaluations that Elevate (Sara Nowlin, ACS, ALB)

In this highly interactive presentation, you will learn, as leaders and Toastmasters, how to elevate your members through high-quality evaluations. Taking your evaluations to the next level requires refining your listening skills to increase your insightful observations, sharpening your critical thinking skills to prioritize your feedback and polishing your delivery that leaves people appreciative and appreciated.

Sara Nowlin has been an educator, trainer and speaker for the last 13 years, focusing on how we can all step into our potential as leaders and change agents. For the last three years, Sara has taught public speaking at the collegiate level at Marist College (Poughkeepsie, NY), evaluating more than 600 speeches. With this experience, Sara applied her skills and won the 2015 District 53 Evaluation Contest. Sara has also delivered dynamic keynotes and presentations for colleges, like Lehigh University and Bard College, and government agencies, like the NYC Mayor's Office. When she's not in presentation mode, you can find her binge watching political TV shows like House of Cards, Scandal, and The West Wing.

Elevation of Others Through Improv (Cate Steel, ACS, ALB)

Improv techniques require agreement between the players, helping your partners look good, dropping personal agendas for the benefit of the group, and working creatively and collaboratively. Laughing and enjoying the experience are often outcomes but the freedom of improve and opportunity for exploration are very liberating.

Cate Steel is a member of Niantic Toastmasters and Shoreline Advanced Toastmasters. She joined Toastmasters in 2003 and has served in leadership roles at the club and district level. She is currently working on her ACG and ALS. Cate has been a part of the Laughworks Improv Group since its inception in 2012. She has theater experience as "Kiki the Clown", has taught improv as well as clowning, and was a featured story teller at the Hempstead House for the Juneteeth celebrations.

Leaders Elevate Leaders (Mitch Tublin, ACB, ALB)

John C. Maxwell often says “leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.” A key element within the context of this quote is that “Leaders Grow Leaders.” Through this continual process, Leaders Elevate Leaders. Through listening, creating relationships and communicating with others effectively, a leader is demonstrating some of the key attributes of true leadership.

Mitch speaks with groups all over the world. His main topics are within the category of values based leadership, influencing others, and increasing communication and feedback techniques, Mitch is a mentor and coach to other coaches, entrepreneurs, executives, politicians, professional athletes, small and medium size business owners, recent college graduates and college students. Mitch has his MBA Degree, graduated from the USMMA, Kings Point with a Bachelor of Science Degree, served in the U. S. Naval Reserve, and sailed aboard deep sea ocean going vessels for over ten years in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He has an extensive corporate career combined with numerous serial entrepreneurial ventures. Mitch is a certified facilitator and certified personal and executive coach. He is a Founding Partner of The John Maxwell Team the largest and fastest growing certification program for Coaches, Trainers and Speakers in the world. Mitch and his wife have been married for over 30 years and have four children.

Congratulations: Club Officer Training 2016 - 2017 First Half

Effective training for club officers is one of the most critical parts of any district’s mission. Without properly trained officers, clubs cannot meet members’ needs or introduce the benefits of Toastmasters to others. Club Officer Training is also a vital means to leadership development.

Club Officer Training is offered twice a year.

Clubs with officers attending training receive credit toward the training goal in the Distinguished Club Program.

Each club that had Seven (7) officers trained received a Super Seven ribbon and a $25 gift certificate to Toastmasters International. Congratulations!!!

We are honored to recognize these 42 clubs!“Anyone can steer the ship, but it takes a leader to chart the course. Leaders who are good

navigators are capable of taking their people just about anywhere." John C. Maxwell
