The Basics
Setting
• Definition: time and place of a story• It can be used to tell about the characters• It can be used to set the atmosphere
Characters
• Definition: people or animals in a literary work• Types– Round: convincing, true to life– Dynamic: undergoes a change– Flat: only 1 or 2 personality traits, shallow,
stereotyped– Static: does not change– Protagonist: – Antagonist:
main charactercharacter that opposes the main character
Methods of Characterization
• Direct: developed through direct statements
• Indirect: developed through speech, thoughts, actions, looks, etc.
Plot
• Definition: a series or sequence of events in the story
• Types– Exposition: start, before action begins– Rising Action: series of conflicts that lead to climax– Climax: turning point, intense– Falling Action: action that follows climax– Resolution: conclusion, problem solved*think triangle!
Conflict
• Definition: a struggle between two forces• Types
–Human vs Human–Human vs Nature–Human vs Society–Human vs Self

Point of View
• Definition: the perspective from which a story is being told
• Types– Omniscient: told by author– Limited Omniscient: told by character in the story,
third person point of view– First Person: told from point of a character, uses
“I”
Theme
• Definition: central message of the story• It can be directly stated or implied
Symbolism
• Definition: represents an idea, quality, or thing
