TEN80 EDUCATION: TEAM &GOALSTen80 is a team of educators and STEM professionals who believe that our society should
cultivate STEM literacy and skills with the same rigor, passion and investment that we do for
sports. Ten80 and partners are expanding access and participation to mentors and programs
that help each individual cultivate the confidence that comes from knowing how toeffectively
answer the hard questions, skillfully tackle challenges and innovate toward a sustainable and
prosperous future for themselves and for oursociety.
Ten80’s goal is to expand the number of students inspired to engage in STEM learning because it is relevant to
their lives and to provide content and support to channel that inspiration into real academic and personal success
in their chosen fields. I n other words, it is to change the perception that STEM careers are narrow and lacking in
creativity and to ensure students aren’t prevented from pursuing a passion or interest because they are ‘weeded out’ by
tough college classes or job requirements they can’t meet.
STEAMSTART & DRIVING STEM(K -6)Start with the end in mind, and deliver skills to meet the challenges of growing up in a high-tech, highly mathematical age.
STEAMStart, MindBugs in Measurement, MindBugs in Math, Scaleville and DRIVING STEM build conceptual understanding while
putting skills to good use. Projects challenge students to meet data-driven goals. STEAMStart for K-2 offers STEAM (science,
technology, engineering, art, mathematics) literacy-based challenges with geometry at the core. DRIVING STEM for grades 3-5
introduces problem-solving and physical science in the context of radio controlled race teams. Offer multiple representations to
beat the MindBugs (misconceptions) in Measurement and Numeracy. Build a world of numbers with Scaleville Daily Starters.
THE NATIONAL STEM LEAGUE (GRADES 7-12)Practice League for Future ProfessionalsThe National STEM League (NSL) is a practice league for future professionals that has recently been named one of four Exemplary
and Scalable STEM† programs by Change the Equation‡. It is the product of over a decade of research-based, classroom-tested
development that has yielded an exciting approach to project-based learning . . . that doesn’t forget the learning . . . and doesn’t
forget the common limitations of traditional science, math and career-technology classrooms. www.nationalstemleague.com

“DO MORE THAN MAKE. MAKE WITH APURPOSE.”
STEAMSTART K-2You start each engineering adventure by reading a story. Team oriented design challenges offer project based learning that focuses onSTEAM careers, geometry, measurement, data collection, data representation, and problem solving. Tinkers talk about math, design, and decisions as they collaborate to design and test scale models.
Individuals create logbooks to document the team’s progress. Sketches, notes, measurements, and other requirements instill an understanding of project based learning and engineering design process. Theseyoungest designers learn the basics of building scale models, developing simple math models, and testing projects to failure. How far can you extend the pier before it requires more posts? If your workshop bench collapses under the weight of its tools, how will you reinforce the design to hold all the materials?
TEN 5-10-Day Units per grade level for the K-2 Classroom, Camp,After School, or STEAMClub.
All Units may be combined to deliver a long range and multi-year STEAM project based curriculum.
You read the stories. Students provide the solutions.

DRIVING STEM CAMPS, CLUBS AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Students learn to play the STEM game in a fun and motivating way. If you want to play professional sports, you start young and play hard. Shouldn’t that also be true for budding scientists, mathematicians and engineers? Driving STEM Challenges are inquiry-based STEM activities that grow in complexity from basic teacher-led activities to student-initiated and student-led investigations.
Students use radio-controlled vehicles to motivate and energize the classroom experience. Project-based challenges reinforce STEM concepts and skills from elementary computation through calculus and physics. Engage students in STEM modules formatted for intercessions, after school programs, and summer camps.
Run your summer camp, and then use the kit for daily classroom lessons through the school year! Each year, renew your camp license to receive current web resources, print materials, training, student logbooks, and additional projects.

[1] The Case for Improving U.S. Computer ScienceEducation, https://itif.org/publications/2016/05/31/ case-improving-uscomputer-science-education
One of the most important STEM fields in our modern economy, Computer Science (CS), hasthe fewest number of high school students taking it[1] and has failed to attract a diverseaudience. Tackling these issues requires focus, a collaborative spirit and a long-view thatengages students of all grade levels and of all levels of exposure and ability.
As with all Ten80 courses and clubs, CS Elementary engages students in activities thateveryone can care about and that teach universal problem-solving skills through critical andlogical thinking. Students collaborate and communicate on team-oriented projects that modelimportant concepts in mathematics and science.
Well-designed CS education helps students learn much more than “coding”; it helps drivecreativity and artistic expression. Modifying computer programs helps build planning anddesign skills. Computer simulation involves abstraction, modeling and prototyping whichincreases spatial relations abilities in children of all ages. A collaborative development teamhelps children develop communication skills and become proactive, innovative thinkers.
Use,Analyze, ModifyStudents in grades 3-5 are ready for true text-based programming, not just drag-and-dropblock programming. In Ten80’s CS Elementary, they start with existing programs, practiceapplying them to model concepts in mathematics and science and then modify the code tocustomize their own models. This scaffolding approach builds confidence in students’programming and problem-solving skills, allowing them to progress towards developing theirown computer programs and simulations.
Training & SupportPairing this “Use, Analyze & Modify” approach with the integration of CS into mathematics andscience lessons helps teachers who are new to computer programming. Ten80’s professionaltrainers work in partnership with educators to ensure these early engagements with CS arefun, stress-free and highly successful.

BUILD A SENSE OF SIZE& SCALE
SCALEVILLE: WORLD OF NUMBERSScaleville starts with simple measurements that grow with understanding.Measure the hand. Name objects 10X longer. Name objects 10X shorter. Convertto metric. Between what two powers of 10 do your measurements fall? As kids work on problem-solving, they also need understanding of size and scale to determine an
answer’s efficacy. Is a measurement reasonable? Scaleville builds a sense of size and scale.
Students grow through the years with Scaleville Daily Starters in their abilities to solve problems, judge reasonableness and estimate.
Use these 5-10 minute activities to build a world ofnumbers for estimation & problem-solving by asking,“How big? How much? How far?”

BUILD DEEPER FOUNDATIONS BASED ON CORE CONCEPTS
WHAT IS A MINDBUG?MindBug Busters are intended to address widespread gaps instudent understanding, the MindBugs of math and science. A MindBug began life as a simple misconception but grew rapidly out of control. Like a computer virus, the MindBug causes problems throughout a learning system. A child learns to line numbers up to the right and add; this procedure works until 5th grade when decimals appear on the scene. MindBugs arefoundin every student in every school in America (and most adults). Erase the problems brought on by shallow procedural knowledge, and build deeper coreunderstanding.
MindBug Buster Activity Sets provide hands-on math & science activities using manipulatives that make sense. The tools help studentslearn to seek patterns, to understand measurement and to see math and science in the world around them. Each set includes amanipulative + Student Activity Guide with 36 Activities + CD ROM with Printable Activity Pages. “Read Across the Curriculum”introduces eachseries.

MEASUREMENTScales, Stopwatches, Thermometers, Tape Measures - Measurement is a foundation of all scientific endeavors;understanding measurement is crucial to a student’s success. These everyday tools facilitate knowledge transfer because students see stopwatches on soccer fields and weigh scales in grocery stores. They also offer opportunities to teach fractions and decimals.
PATTERNS & NUMERACYNumber Sliders, Napier’s Bones, Patterns, 99’s Charts - Students who recognize patterns are well on their way toconceptual grounding in mathematics. Like measurement tools, seeing patterns in numbers will facilitate transfer because students don’t have to memorize procedures to ‘get the right answer.
ESTIMATES & PROBLEMSOLVINGScaleville - Students build a world of numbers by answering how far, how fast, how heavy in Scaleville Daily Starters. Theydiscover their own problem-solving strategies with a little help from the Ten80 STEM Team.

Banish the MindBugs from Your SchoolLead students toward discovery and foster a love ofscience. Actively engage students, then supportthem during active subject explorations. Only afterexploring are students primed for an accurate butage-appropriate explanation. To effectively planfuture instruction, evaluate understanding and -asappropriate- extend it.
MindBugs Professional Development delivers strongunderstanding of scientific content and an effectiveteaching strategy. Educators learn to see and takeadvantage of opportunities to create and continuallyreinforce critical scientific concepts and skills.
If the Earth were the center of our SolarSystem, what would the path of the sunlooklikeoverthecourseofasingleday? It would look exactly like it does today. This Q&Aillustrates perfectly why students and educatorsalike create and carry misconceptions in science.Without careful observations coupled withaccurate measurements, it’s easy to drawincorrect conclusions about the world around us.
MINDBUGS IN SCIENCE
MINDBUGS IN MATHEMATICSAthird-grader uses fingers to count just THREE objectson atable.A sixth-grade honor student still lines numbers up to the right…even when adding decimals.High achievingstudents avoidcareers in math andscience.Straight-A math students can’t use a tape measure to make a 180 inch line.Sciencestudents on the collegetrackfail to understand asimple graph.Major detours in conceptual learning can occur very early in a child’s education during the period in which students should be learning the fundamental nature of numbers. Take David forexample:
David pretends to understand numbers in 2nd grade and memorizes procedures for counting, adding and subtracting. In 4th grade, decimals enter the picture and memorizing procedures becomes too complex. All of the ‘tricks’ fail to work and he starts to falter on assessments. Since David never really understood the nature of anumber, place value is lost. Long division is catastrophic without place value. By5th grade, David shuts down to math. Without math, he will not succeed in science.
How do we address the capable young “Davids” of our world? We help students, teachers and parents understand that learning 1000’s of procedures isn’t sufficient. We help students, parents and teachers learn the fundamental underlying conceptsso that the 1000’s of procedures aren’tnecessary.
