SESSION PREMISE
Students will take the Math STAAR Test Spring 2015.
They may see items in which they were not exposed to during the school year.
Some Potential Causes :
Cause 1: New Instructional Materials Not Written for STAAR 2015
Cause 2: Teacher Lack of Knowledge of New TEKS As Interpreted in TEA Side By Sides And Focal Points
Cause 3: Time for Planning to Implement New TEKS for New STAAR
Cause 4: Time for Professional Development regarding New TEKS, New STAAR, and Instruction
Cause 5: Time and Skill to Look for Aligned Materials to New STAAR 2015
Cause 6: Time and Skill to Create Materials for New TEKS and STAAR 2015
Cause 7: Time and Knowledge of Instructional Prioritization for STAAR 2015

VALIDITY
Validity is the extent to which a test item measures
what it claims to measure.
It is vital for the item to be valid
in order for the results to be accurately applied and interpreted.

MATCHING STAAR QUESTIONS TO NEW TEKS
To complete this exercise, the following documents were used:
STAAR 2014 Released Test (RABs by Objective/SE doc)
STAAR 2014 Answer Key (Saved in Excel and Sorted by RC)
STAAR 2014 Assessed Curriculum (Readiness and Supporting)

Math Grade 3 Item No. 10Previous RC 3 Geometry and Spatial Reasoning TEKS 3.10(A)
The student is expected to locate and name points on a number line using, whole numbers and fractions
including halves and fourths.
NOTE: WHOLE NUMBERS MOVED TO 2.2(E)
Only the fraction portion of 3.10(A)-previous
aligns to 3.3(B) and 3.7(A)-new. This question
addresses the whole number part which has
moved to 2.2(E,F). This question could be used
for grade 2 because the numbers are less than
1,200 -the whole numbers in grade 2 TEKS (see
Baucom’s Place Value Chart)
NOTE: 3.3(B) and 3.7(A) are both in RC 1.

The student is expected to locate and name points on a number line using, whole numbers, fractions
such as halves and fourths, and decimals such as tenths.
Step 1:
1 2 3 4
Step 1: Determine the interval from 2 whole numbers
Step 2: Mark the number line to U
Step 3: Find the value for U in the answer choice
Note: students can use process of elimination to rule out F

Correct. Located Mary at (o) on x access then moving up y axis by (1). Then located Hailey by moving
2 over on x access to (2) and 3 up y axis to (4).
Incorrect. Located Mary then incorrectly went up y axis 2 and across x axis by 3
Incorrect. Incorrectly located Mary then at (1,0) then went across 3 on x axis and up 2 on y.
Incorrect. located Mary then continued up y axis for 3 then 2 for (0,6)
Item 32 (RC3) was chosen to show the relationship
between points on a number line (RC1) along with
the understanding of perpendicular lines in grade
4 lead to the coordinate plane in grade 5 as seen
in the new 5.8(A).
Analysis by Robin A Baucom 22
NOTE: Question 32
could be used for
instruction of 5.8(A)
and 5.8.(C). However,
for testing purposes, a
question is needed
that addresses
fractional values
