Create a Meal

With an adult, create a healthy meal. Make sure to include the 5 food groups: • Make half your plate veggies and fruits:

Vegetables and fruits are full of nutrients that support good health. Choose fruits and red, orange, and dark-green vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli.

• Include whole grains: Aim to make at least half your grains whole grains. Look for the words “100% whole wheat” on the food label. Whole grains provide more nutrients, like fiber, than refined grains.

• Add lean protein: Choose protein foods such as lean beef, pork, chicken, or turkey, and eggs, nuts, beans, or tofu. Twice a week, make seafood the protein on your plate.

• Don’t forget the dairy: Complete your meal with a cup of fat-free or low-fat milk. You will get the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but fewer calories. Don’t drink milk? Try a soy beverage (soymilk) as your drink or include low-fat yogurt in your meal or snack.

• Satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthy way: Indulge in a naturally sweet dessert dish-fruit! Serve a fresh fruit salad or a fruit parfait made with yogurt. For a hot dessert, bake apples and top with cinnamon.

Design a Warm-up Design a warm-up that can be done in your living room, back yard, family room, or anywhere! Teach it to your family!

Indoor/Outdoor Obstacle Course Make the obstacle course simple at first and change the stations as they're mastered. If you like, time the kids to see who can complete the course fastest. Just beware, it can quickly turn competitive. Here are a few ideas to get you started on building an indoor obstacle course for your kids (change up the activities often):

• crawl under or over a row of chairs or a string

stretched between two chair legs • jump into and out of a hula-hoop five times • do a headstand or handstand • throw an object into a laundry basket • somersault (or log roll) from one point to another • perform various exercises • jump rope • twirl, twist, wind, etc.

Create a Totem Pole Have you ever heard of a totem pole? Totem poles are monumental carvings, a type of Northwest Coast art, consisting of poles, posts or pillars, carved with symbols or figures. They are usually made from large trees.

Maybe you can’t carve a giant tree into a totem pole, but you can make one right at home. All you need is an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll, some paper, crayons or markers, tape or glue and your imagination.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of construction paper long enough to wrap around the paper roll.

2. Lay the paper out flat and draw on an animal’s face. It’s a good idea to have some examples of actual totem poles (books, photos etc.) handy.

3. When you have finished drawing the face, glue the construction paper around the paper roll.

4. Cut a triangular shape out of the construction paper for the nose or beak, crease it down the middle (so it will stick out), and glue the edges onto the face.

5. Decorate a pair of wings and glue them to your totem.

6. If you like, you can make a few different totems and stack them on top of one another.

Design a Mandala A mandala is a circular piece of art. The word “mandala” itself means “circle” in Sanskrit. Circles have a very important meaning in Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions. Mandalas came about in Indian and Himalayan religious traditions as artistic ways of representing the spiritual universe. The ancient Hindu scriptures think of time as circular, having a creation period, a period of flourishing existence, and a destruction that leads to another inevitable creation. Modern mandalas we can see in coloring books or contemporary artwork used as means to reduce stress, connect deeply with oneself, and appreciate forms of beauty in the world. To make your own Mandala, just follow the steps below:

1. Gather up circular objects in many different sizes, then trace around each one with a pencil. Be sure to start with the smallest and work your way up to the largest.

2. Next, fill in the spaces between the circles with different patterns and designs.

3. When you are finished with the designs, trace the pencil lines with a black marker or pen.

4. Finally, if you want you can color in your Mandala with pencils, markers, crayons, or paint.

Kandinsky Inspired Circles Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter who began his career at the turn of the 20th century. This is one of his most well-known paintings, “Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles”. Kandinsky made this painting in 1913. Concentric circles are circles that fit inside of each other and have the same center. You can make your own Kandinsky inspired circles piece by following the steps below.

1. Get a piece of paper and fold it into even squares. You can fold it into as many squares as you like, 4, 8 or even 12.

2. Using a pencil, draw a large circle in each square. Be sure to draw the circles free hand so they are not perfect.

3. Fill in each circle with a series of smaller circles. 4. When you are finished, color in each circle with a different

color. You can use crayons, pencils, markers, paint… whatever! Then, choose a background color for each square. Think about your color choices as you finish your piece.

Symmetrical Name Creatures Symmetry is when an object looks the exact same on one side as the other. To see if an object is symmetrical, you draw a line of symmetry or a line dividing an object to show a perfect match on each side. It's like making a mirror image. In this activity, you will create a symmetrical name creature of your own design by following the steps below.

1. Get a piece of paper and fold it in half vertically. 2. Write your name on the piece of paper (see example below),

be sure to write big and take up the whole length of the paper. 3. Next, cut around the letters. Be sure not to cut through the folded side. 4. Open up the folded paper and begin designing your creature. 5. Keep in mind that the creature should be symmetrical, the same on each side, as you design

and color it.

Color Wheel Challenge

Using objects found throughout your home, collect as many colored objects as you can to create a color wheel. You can use anything you find around your house to create your color wheel! BE SUPER CREATIVE!

Use the simple 6 color wheel and create your own wheel with the object you found!

Fashion Show IDEA #1: Putting on a fashion show can be fun for all players, especially if everyone gets to choose the role they will play. In the planning stages, decide on a theme for the show (such as fall fashions or holiday outfits); plan music and which roles other family members will play. You can have designers, emcees, a journalist, and a photographer. Plan the set up; where you will enter and exit—as well as where the audience will sit. Once your show is organized and set up, get the audience seated and let the show begin!

IDEA #2: Rehearse a show in which EVERYTHING GOES WRONG! (On purpose) It’s fun but not easy to do. Example: The emcee trips over the microphone cord, or models wear things that don’t fit—and don’t go together. Think of all the silliness you can!

Story Dramatization Choose one of your favorite simple children’s books and recreate the story. You can make up the lines, you can reread them, or have someone else read it as you act it out. Another option is to get more family members involved to act out other characters from the story. Record your drama and share it out (optional)

Mystery Bag Have an adult gather several different objects and place them in a bag. With a blindfold on, use your senses to identify objects. How many can you guess correctly?

• TOUCH: feather, balloon, shell, sandpaper, fur, money. • SMELL: coffee, perfume, onion. • TASTE: raisins, cornflakes, coconut, crackers, marshmallows, chocolate

Puppet Show Make puppets (be creative...use paper, socks, finger puppets, paper bags), create a story for your puppets. Produce your story using the puppets. Practice and then perform for your family. Record it and share it out (optional). Get other family members involved and be creative!

Artists and Blobs (K-2) Get a family member to work with you. Choose who will be the “artist” and who will be the “blob”. The artist forms his/her partner into some kind of statue. The blob relaxes as much as possible until the statue is formed, then tries to hold that pose. (TIP: PLAY MUSIC while the artist is forming their blob.) When the art work is complete have family members walk about and admire the artist’s creation! Trade places and try again!

Alphabet Conversation (3-5) Procedure:

1. You need 2 people. 2. They must exchange dialogue in which the first word they speak must begin with the next letter

of the alphabet, starting with whichever letter is selected and finishing at the letter just before. 3. The conversation should make sense and propel action in the scene. 4. Think of a scenario or given situation/scene before starting.

For example: “Fishing in the middle of a Lake”, starting letter is “D”, which means the ending letter would be “C”. Actor 1: Do you want to add more bait to your hook? Actor 2: Eel or should I use squid? Actor 1: Forget eel, squid is the way to get the really big fish! Actor 2: Gonna give it a shot, here I go! Actor 1: Holy cow, nice cast! Actor 2: I‘ve been practicing all summer… etc. etc. etc.
