Important Dates A Message From Principal Corey Hafey:

Dear Appleton Parents and Students,

I am so proud of the Appleton Parent Teacher Association. All of us owe a debt of gratitude for what these hardworking folks do for the students, families, and staff at Appleton Elementary.

This is the second year you were not bombarded with catalog orders as the main method of fundraising for P.T.A.? For the 2nd time in many years, Appleton families did not see a Fall and Spring catalog ordering push. The P.T.A. came up with a myriad of other ways to make the funds necessary for our kids to receive a great elementary experience. The P.T.A. listened and responded when people stated, “There must be a better way of getting the funds we need without giving so much of the profit back to a company outside of our community.” Our Appleton community deserves a big thank you, too. Your support of: the Spell-a-Thon, Appleton Carnival, Holiday Craft Fair, Holiday Ornament Gift Shop, Box Tops for Education, Papa John’s Pizza Nights, City Market Community Rewards program, the Gerlach Family Turkey donation, and other events was crucial to allowing the P.T.A. the flexibility to look to other options than catalog orders.

The projected P.T.A. costs to maintain: additional Instructional Aides, our Artist in Residency, Library and Bookroom purchases, field trips, mediator support, staff development, technology and teacher support, as well as many other expenses is about $30,000 per year. Artists in Mrs. Geer’s Class Enjoy Art Heritage Lessons

If you happened to recently walk through Appleton hallways, you certainly would have noticed the enormous food art including: tacos, popcorn, pizza, doughnuts and even ice cream cones! Mrs. Geer’s kindergarten class created the ice cream cones. Thanks to the two fabulous moms who monthly teach us about art, our class enjoyed a special art heritage presentation about the American sculptor, Claes Oldenburg. Oldenburg is known for his extra-large rep-licas of everyday objects displayed on campuses, parks and at museums all around America. The kindergarteners worked together to design their specialty waffle cones with every day craft materials. The kids’ smiles show off their hard work and artistic ice cream cone creations.

Mrs. Geer’s Ice Cream Creations

Thank you to all of the art heritage volunteers for transforming our hallways into our very own Appleton Art Museum.

Writers in Mrs. Prell’s Class Write “How To…” Books

During 3rd Quarter, Kindergarten students learned about informational writing. Students learned all the com-ponents that belong in a How-To Book. They learned how to create a front cover, write an introduction, write detailed steps to explain how to do a topic of their choice, and write a conclusion to finish their books. At the end of the unit, students also got to invite their families to a How-To Celebration! During the celebration students were able to share their hard work by reading their favorite how-to book that they created to many different parents and family members. Each classroom was packed full and all the students loved sharing their books with so many people. It was a lot of fun and proud moment for all involved!

When we started our opinion writing unit, we brainstormed a list of problems we see in our communities; at school, in the classroom, at home and in our home town community. We have been talking about kindness and how we can change the world through writing. It must have been meant to be that I got a letter emailed to me from a few local Palisade High School students, Tully and Olivia. They were asking the community to get involved in their project, “Framework for Happiness.” They were asking our community to help support Happiness with art. I jumped at the chance to incorporate art and our Kindergarten writing unit of opinion writing. We took some time to write and draw about what makes us feel happy. Then we used our ideas and made small, 3 X 3, murals of happiness, using recycled paint samples. Our art murals will be combined together and the inspiration will be the center piece of the Studio Col-orado Gallery at the Altrusa Art Fair, from April 14-28, 2017, at The Art Center. This has been a wonderful experience for our class to be able to spread our personal “Framework of Happiness” with so many people in our community. If you get a chance, please support this amazing event and stop by and see how Kindergarten was able to invest in design and invest in our community, with our “Happy Art.”

Mediator Skills

Observe a mid-day recess at Appleton and you will most often see two older students wearing blaze orange vests and packing around a large bag of recess toys. These students are part of the Appleton Mediators. They learn conflict resolution strategies from training with our Appleton Counselor, Elizabeth Inskeep. While on the playground, younger students will often go to the Mediators with minor problems that they want help resolving. The Mediators are great leaders and role models for the younger students. They also have fun playground toys supplied by the P.T.A. that they check out to the younger students. Mediators also express how learning the strategies and having the opportuni-ty to serve really makes them feel important and mature. Mediators are a win-win situation for our students.

Parent Requests for Classroom Assignment Forms

Parent Requests for Classroom Assignment Forms will be available at the Appleton office starting April 24. Parent requests for classroom placement must be turned in to the office by Monday, May 8 at 4:00pm. A completed Parent Re-quest for Classroom Assignment is not a guarantee that your child will be placed with the requested teacher. As in past years, teachers are subject to moving to different grade levels and assignments well after requests have been made. At the time this newsletter was generated, teaching positions for next year were not 100% identified.

Some changes we do know include:Mrs. Petras will move from 4th grade to 3rd grade (Joining Mrs. Petch & Mrs. Williams)4th grade will be two rounds with Mrs. Schultz & Mrs. Crone1st grade: Mrs. Dangler will be on leave for maternity for 2017-2018. Mrs. Hickman, Mrs. Skalla, and a great candidate yet to be determined will teach 1st.No changes are predicted for other grade levels at this time.

Parent/Teacher Conferences Coming Soon

We hope you all can make the Parent/Teacher Conferences. It’s a great time to celebrate your child’s growth they made through this year. Research shows that parent involvement in their child’s education is a strong indicator of that child’s future success. Appleton typically has above 95% attendance at Parent/Teacher Conferences. That’s a lot of people hearing good news!

Safe2Tell

Dear Parents,

School District 51 is excited to announce the launch of a new free resource available to our students and community. Missing That Winter Coat?

Lots of lost and found clothing has accumulated since the weather turned warmer. Items not picked up before the school year ends will be donated.

Are You Moving?

Parents, if you know your child will not be attending Appleton next year, please notify the office (254-6400). This will really support our planning for next year and may open spots up for students who were denied in the School of Choice process due to lack of room in a specific grade level.
