Introduction

Throughout the past 50 years the advancements in technology have accelerated at an

astonishing speed. With these changes, we have seen benefits and new obstacles.

Technology has changed the lifestyles of those around the world. Some advances in

technology can be used for medical purposes or entertainment. While other advances

have increased the amount of communication whether it is between people 20 minutes

or 3,000 miles away from each other. This report will point out the shift in electronic

communication, and the positive and negative effects of these shifts.

Advancement in e-communication

The shift in electronic communications is ever growing. There seems to always be a

new feature or idea that

increases the speed and

availability of communication

through electronics.

Cell Phones- When cell phones

were first created, the only

difference between cell phones

and a home phone was the

ability to use it outside of your

home Now, there are many new

additions to the use of cell

phones. One of the most

popular changes is the ability to

text. Texting is a simpler version

of emailing, allowing a person to

relay a message almost

anywhere they are. Another addition is the introduction of smart phones. Smart phones

are those that have Internet access. Some brand names of the more popular smart

phones are:

I-phone

Blackberry

HTC

The initial use of the smart phones was for people who needed and wanted access to

their email at all time. Now, each company is trying to produce the best smart phone

available. Throughout the years, the phones have become smaller and slimmer. Having

a full keyboard allows for faster texting or emailing. As cell phones become smaller and

faster, they become more popular.

Communication Over the Internet- The first major communication use over the

Internet was Email. Email was a much quicker communication device in contrast to the

traditional “snail mail”. Email started off slow; however, it became more popular

throughout time. Now, many use email for work or just for pleasure. The next shift came

with social network areas such as Myspace and Facebook. Allowing people to tell all

their friends what they were

up to during the week.

Facebook and Myspace are

geared toward a broad

audience. Email is traditionally

used for a few people,

typically in one on one

communication, while

Facebook and Myspace the

user can tell information to all

of their friends at once. It was

deemed a faster method to

communicate what was going on. Another quicker shift came; Twitter instantly allows

the user to tell many what they are doing. Twitter is an instant notification for all of the

user’s friends.

Global Positioning System (GPS)- The introduction of GPS enriched all types of

electronic communication. GPS can be used to locate a person who needs emergency

response. Another use is planning for natural disasters. The information provided

through GPS assists in planning safe areas and evacuation routes for events such as a

tsunami or hurricane. It has and will help save numerous lives. Another helpful use of

the GPS system is for Military uses. By tracking planes or boats, this increases the

safety. With the GPS, the military can react quicker.

Evolution of ECN

Over the past few years, an alternative to the conventional quity trading arrangements

(see box) has emerged: the electronic communications network. An ECN is an

automated trading system that disseminates orders to third parties and dealers and can

execute such orders within the network itself.1 Most ECNs are regulated as brokers

and, as brokers, they receive orders from customers. The networks post the price and

size of limit orders—orders to buy or sell specific quantities of stock at a specific price—

received from clients and automatically complete transactions internally when they find

appropriate matches.

POSITIVE EFFECTS

With this shift in electronic communication, many positive changes have occurred.

Global Communication - One advantage of quicker communication is the use of news

coverage throughout the world. Nations can communicate with each other, sharing

current information of problems they have. This allows the people to be more informed

with what is going on in the world, helping to unite and give knowledge to everyone.

Another change is the global economy. Before this quick communication, each nation

mostly functioned independently. Now, countries have become more interdependent as

they can exchange products more rapidly through electronic communication systems.

With this global economy and quicker communication between continents there has

been a blending of culture. The availability to access different aspects of cultures

through communication is popular. The blending of cultures also helps unite our world.

Communications with friends and family- People all over the world have taken

advantage of the quicker communication. Many use various ways of communication to

touch base more often. Some ways of communication are:

Social Network

Cell Phones

Blogging sites

Each of these examples allows quick access to others. Through the advancements in

technology communication has become increasingly constant. There is often a new

update whether it is through text, twitter, or email. This helps connect people. In

addition, there is also a bigger network of people to connect with. People are no longer

connecting with just their close friends or immediate family; they can connect with 5th

cousins or someone in whom they have done 8th grade with.

Faster Communication- The first form of communication was writing letters and

sending them through the mail. Now, the use of the postal office is referred to as “snail

mail”. In the present this is the slowest form of communication. The next step was the

use of Email, allowing a quicker communication. Many check their email often, so

instead of waiting for at least a week for a response, it could become hours. The

quickest form of communication now is through twitter or texting. Instantly updating or

announcing whatever is on the mind of the user.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS

While there have been many positive effects through this quick use of communication,

there have also been some negative changes amongst our society.

Dehumanization- With the use of texting becoming so popular, many people would

rather text than to call a person.

This can lead to inappropriate

choices, such as breaking up

with someone through text, or

delivering bad news. This

reliance on hiding behind a text

can really hurt the recipient’s

feelings. Another side effect of

relying more and more on

electronic communication is that

people begin to isolate

themselves and rely on

electronic communication for a human connection. In reality, connecting through the

Internet cannot replace a human connection.

Job Industry- One industry that has been directly affected by electronic communication

is the US Postal Services. As talked about previously, people are using email as their

primary type of communication; therefore “snail mail” is being used less often. This has

caused a decrease in the amount of money the mail system is worth. Another way that

communication has changed is through electronically controlled phone calls. Some jobs

have been lost because of the replacements by computer software and systems such

as automatic answering systems. This system can create difficulty in directly

communicating with a person. It is harder to communicate with a computer if what the

person wants to say is not an option given. Internet shopping has been rapidly growing

Page 8

Page 9: Electronic Communication New Media-1

as one of the top methods people use to buy goods. This leads some businesses to

need less people, or to not even need a store

Health & Safety- There has recently been an increase in the concern resulting from the

amount of cell phone use. A cell phone does emit some radiation. With a cell phone in

such close

proximity to the

brain most of the

time, some are

beginning to

become concerned

with the effect on

the brain this could

have. Another

health concern is

people’s decrease

in activity since the

increase in

electronics with all the entertainments revolving around technology many kids and even

adults aren’t as active. A major safety concern is of texting. Texting and driving is

considered by many to be more dangerous than driving while drunk. According to the

website, www.textingndrving.com, “57% of American Drivers admit to texting behind the

wheel.” This issue is a bigger issue for teen drivers, for they are the ones driving and

texting more often.

CONCLUSION

The popularity of electronic communication has increased because of the ease of

access of the wide variety of types of electronic communication. While there have been

many positive changes in the world, the negative aspects also need to be taken into

consideration. There will likely be more changes in communication through the use of

technology, in an attempt to improve our daily lives and these changes are anticipated

by many to bring both increase benefits and new challenges and complications.
