  • 1.1 BasicTheoryandApplicationofpHMeasurementpHreferstothepowerorexponentofhydrogenwherepstandsforpowerandHisthesymboloftheelementHydrogen.

    pH is defined as the negative logarithm of the molar concentration of the active hydrogen ions, pH = -log H+ .

    pHprovidesaconvenientwaytocomparetherelativeacidityoralkalinityofasampleatagiventemperature.Forexample,purewaterhasaneutralpHof7,wheretheactivitiesofhydrogenandhydroxideionsareequal.Iftheactivityofhydrogenionisgreaterthanthatofhydroxideionthesampleisdescribedasacidic.Ingeneral,asthelevelofhydrogenionactivityincreases,thepHdecreases.ApHbelow7isknownasacidic.Onthecontrary,asthelevelofhydrogenionactivitydecreases,thepHincreases.ApHabove7isknownasalkalineorbasic.

    1.2 UseofElectrodesforpHMeasurementpHmeasurementisusuallydonewiththeuseofacombinationelectrode.Thecombinationelectrodeisanelectrodesystemformedbyaglasssensinghalf-cellandaninternalreferencehalf-cell.Asthereferencejunctionactsasthemediumofconductorbetweenthereferenceelectrolyteandthesampletobemeasured,itmustallowfreemovementofelectronsthroughthejunctionandintothesample.ApotentialdevelopsonthemembranesurfacewhenapHelectrodecomesintocontactwithasampleanditsvaluevarieswiththepHofthesample.ThisvariationinpotentialismeasuredinmVbyameterandisconvertedtodirectpHvalues.

    1.3 SlopeTheslopeisthevoltageproducedperpH.Intheory,thevalueis59.16mVperpHat25C.Practically,thevaluerangesbetween50and58mV.

    1.4 InfluenceofTemperatureonpHMeasurement

    TemperaturevariationscanaffectpH.HoweveratacertainpH,usually7,temperaturewillnothaveaneffectonthepotentialofthesystem.Thisisknownastheisopotentialpoint.
