Members Benefit From Lower Fuel Costs

At French Broad EMC, as withany electric cooperative, thelargest budget item is wholesalepower cost.  It typically makes up55-60% of the overall annualbudget.  In order to set our cus-tomer retail rates, it is necessaryto forecast what power costs willbe a year in advance.  This canbe extremely difficult as there areseveral factors that go into deter-mining the total wholesale powercost forecast, one of which isweather.  Weather plays a majorrole in the wholesale cost ofpower.  If we have a cold winterand a warm summer, we see anincrease in demand and energycosts.  Likewise, if we have a mildwinter as we did this past year,we see a decrease in our whole-sale power costs.

The cost of the fuel used togenerate electricity is also amajor factor in calculating whole-sale power cost.  Coal, diesel,natural gas, and nuclear all havedifferent costs associated withthem, and those costs continually

change depending on the circum-stances.  For instance, coal costshave increased due to EPAregulations and a reduction inoverall production, while, on theother hand, natural gas priceshave dropped dramatically due toan increase in supply and the mildwinter weather.

Last fall, French Broad EMCbudgeted for an overall increaseof about four percent on ourpower cost, which was driven byhigher demand and energycharges from Duke Energy alongwith an estimated overall increasein power purchases.  Fortunately,with the mild winter, our pur-chases have been lower thanexpected.  We have seen anincrease in fuel costs recently, butoverall for the year, fuel is ex-pected to stay lower than origi-nally estimated.  This has allowedus to once again reduce ourpurchase power and fuel adjust-ment charges to our membersover the few months.

Our Board of Directors recentlymade the decision to continuethese reductions and give back acredit on each bill throughout thesummer months.  These creditswill amount to almost $900,000dollars over the period.  This isjust one of the many advantagesof being a member of an electriccooperative.  A for-profit utilitywould keep these additionalrevenues, show it as profit, andonly the stockholders of the com-pany would benefit.

Fortunately, as a member ofFrench Broad EMC, you doníthave to be a stock holder to getthis benefit.  This reduction will goto every member.  Also, the Boardof Directors gave back $1.2 milliondollars last December in the formof our annual capital credit refund.Who knows how long theseunusually low natural gas pricesand mild weather patterns will lastbut, as long as it does, it will keepour energy costs lower thanpredicted and all our customerswill benefit.

      Three hundred twenty-five members, along with their families andguests, attended French Broad EMCís 76th Annual Meeting on May 6th atMadison High School.  In addition to the Health Fair, members enjoyed afundraiser breakfast and entertainment was provided by The Whisnantís.Kids of all ages enjoyed roving magician Bill Grimsley, face painter TammyHowell, balloon artist Marcie McGrath and caricature drawing artist EricHuffine.  Following the business meeting, members had the opportunity to winprizes and the winners were:
