For over 5,000 years, iron and its alloy have played a part in the daily life of mankind like no other metal.

Our solutions for Ferrous metals

the oldest metal known to manIron is the world’s most common element, so it is little wonder that it forms the basis of all industries.

Of all the iron and steel consumed over the past century, a significant proportion has been produced in large-capacity plants that require high levels of electricity.

the toughest and most sophisticated operating environmentEvery stage of iron and steel production takes place in an extremely harsh environment.

The mix of metallurgical and physiochemical processes are controlled by brute power coupled with the highest levels of intelligent automation systems that provide high levels of insight, dynamic response and monitoring.

The power feeding and distributing equipment is designed to maximise protection, safety, closed loop information flow and actions, and redundancies in electrical and automation architectures—regardless the level of voltage (EHV to LV).

At the same time, it is normal for electrical systems to operate at full load or overload, which requires that care and caution be exercised when selecting the ratings and specifications of the equipment and its fault levels.

For these reasons, the industry standards for safety, reliability and availability of electrical equipment and installation exceed in an iron and steel plant environment.

our knowledge of power systems and electrical engineering allows us to understand electrical transients and their impact on design. as a result alstom Grid can undertake protection coordination studies across the HV/mV/lV networks for successful installation of your plant’s electrical system.

substations and power distribution for ferrous metal and alloy plants At Alstom Grid, we draw on over a century of experience in supplying power to industries and utilities to design and manufacture rugged and reliable equipment for high peak loads that conform to the strictest safety and environmental standards.

With experts in 30 global project-delivery centres and a local presence in over 100 countries, we ensure that our solutions are tailor-made and comprehensive.

We provide electrical switchyards and power distribution solutions for the full scope of integrated iron and steel plants. These cover everything from raw material import terminals and stocking yards to iron- and steel-making plants, hot and cold rolling mills, and metal processing lines. We also provide electricals for captive power generation plants and by-products/utility plants (oxygen, nitrogen, acid, lime, etc).

our strength in iron and steel plantsAlstom Grid’s quality products meet the steel industry’s demand for equipment that respects the strictest environmental and safety standards.

We have full capabilities in Main receiving Substations (MrSS) and Load Block Distribution Substations (LBDS).

These are complemented by our capacity to work on a range of scales, be it to automate a small substation in a steel plant utility, or install a powerful SCADA with geographically distributed architecture that can monitor and control all the process-plant substations.

local presence and servicesGiven that the steelmaking process is complex and in continuous operation, rapid service is required when problems arise. In this regard our local service teams are on call day and night to ensure that your facilities run efficiently. For each project we provide network consulting, training, maintenance and long term services.

static Var compensator (sVc) for reliable power and increased productivityFurnaces perform best and produce more when the power supply is stable. However, the power network and furnaces can themselves be the cause of disruption. Alstom Grid’s SVC solutions manage the large voltage fluctuations typical of steelmaking, helping you to exceed your expectations for productivity and stability.

Special solutions forsteel Plants

Energy-intensive operations also impact significantly on other users on the electrical bus. The SVC maintains a reactive power demand within the limits set by utilities and also reduces flickers, thus minimising or eliminating financial penalties. Our advanced SVCs meanwhile allow you to achieve a higher number of heats per day, therefore increasing productivity.

transformers and reactors with highest-rated referencesOur transformers are key to providing a stable, dependable, safe and environmentally responsible energy supply for the steel industry.

For over 40 years, we have designed and manufactured the industry’s largest EAF transformers and reactors, which range from 40 to 300 MVA/36 kV, as well as ladle furnace transformers from 10 to 100 MVA/36 kV.

As a result of producing the world’s first four

references above 200 MVA, Alstom Grid is now the indisputable global leader in extra-high power EAF transformers.

By connecting these EAF transformers to a series reactor or furnace reactor, the impact of short-circuit peaks on furnace operations can be smoothed out. Our air core reactors are designed to prevent saturation—even in cases of high short-circuit currents.

special solutions for ferroalloy plantsDc rectifiers for reductionAt Alstom Grid, we have a full capability to provide not only HV/MV supplies, but also the DC rectifiers that are used in DC furnace-based processes for reducing ferrochrome, ferronickel, cobalt or manganese alloys.
