ELECTRICAL HAZARDSDEFINITION
Any potential or actual threat due to electricity to the wellbeing of people, machinery or environment.TYPES OF ELECTRICAL HAZARDS:
• ELECTRIC SHOCK Results in Electrocution, falls or movement into machinery• BURNS Results in burning of body and organs. •ARC BLASTS Results in electrocution and other body injuries
Examples of Workplace Electrical Hazards
Power lines Damaged receptacles
Exposed conductors
Extension wires Improper grounding
Broken bulbs
Sources of Electrical Hazards. Electrical hazardsWorking with electrical equipment lacking UL labelElectrical equipments that has not been properly groundedWorking with electrical equipment on damp floors Improper wiring Insulation failure Electrostatic hazards: Uncontrolled static electricity is responsible for a large number of serious industrial fires
and explosions every year Lightning hazards : Lightning has the ability to create forest fires as well as local and large scale power
outages that can be damaging to communication systems and electrical systems including computers.
Examples of Sources of Electrical Hazards
Electrical hazards to humans
• Current flow • Let go current• Freeze• Skin resistance• Severity of current
Detection of electrical hazards
• Circuit tester
• Receptacle wiring tester • Continuity tester
Reducing Electrical Hazards• GROUNDING
o Electrical System Groundingo Separate Equipment Groundingo GROUND FAULT INTERRUPTER
• IONIZERS AND ELECTROSTATIC NEUTRALIZERS• FUSES• CIRCUIT BREAKERS• DOUBLE INSULATION• WARMING DEVICES
