1.0 INTRODUCTION
2.0 DESIGN CRITERIA
The cable sizing is carried out based on following criteria's:
- Continuous current carrying capacity
- Voltage drops in cable (Normal Running and Starting Conditions)
- The minimum cable size required to with stand the fault current
3.0 BASIC DESIGN DATA
The cable sizing calculations carried out in this document are based on the following basic design data :
Design ambient air temperature 55 ºC (As per contract document, Appendix‐F, Attchement‐1)
Design ambient ground temperature 40 ºC (refer Cl. 5.0 of KOC‐E‐008)

This document covers the cable sizing calculation and schedule for LV Power and Lighting Cables for Tank T-202A, T-203C and Tank T-09, T-10 areas as per the scope specified in Contract document, Appendix F.

5.0 SHORT CIRCUIT VALUE
The equipemnts protected by MCCB having short circuit protection. The annexure - I table indicates the
ratings of MCCB, the maximum thermal stresses, the limiting thermal stress of MCCB and the size of
the power cable proposed.
Minimum cross section of conductor required to with stand fault current is,
A = Isc x √ t Formula (1)
Where A = Minimum size of the conductor in mm2
t = Fault with stand time in seconds
Isc = Fault current in Amps
k = 225.7 X Sqrt of log e (β+T2) Formula (2)

Where T1 = Initial Temperature of XLPE at the end of short circuit conductor (in Deg. C)
T2 = Final Temperature of the conductor ( C )
β = Reciprocal of the temperature co efficient of resistance of copper
conductor in Deg. C at 0 Deg. C.
For XLPE cables, β = 235
T1 = 250 Deg. C
T2 = 90 Deg. C
From the above formula (2), and as per KOC Standard, KOC-E-008, Clause 6.2 the Value of
k = 143 for XLPE cables.
From the formula (1) the below table shows different short circuit level with different time durations, indicates
minimum cross sectional area (C.S.A) of cables.
