iNTRODUCTiON
The mining industry is characterized by its complex production processes and the very dangerous environment in which they are carried out in order to exploit the different minerals, hence the importance of staff safety regarding the selection of equipment, and the cables to power and control the equipment. Condumex offers a complete line of cables for mining applications which are specially designed to supply energy to the various items of equipment operating under severe conditions, such as constant mechanical abuse, weather conditions, moisture, very high and very low temperatures, abrasion, the presence of corrosive agents, and sometimes, highly explosive atmospheres, all these with the aim of providing maximum safety to min-ing personnel.
In order to make this catalog of electrical conductors used in the mining industry easier for our customers to handle, we divided the cables into groupings according to their ap-plications: cables for fixed installations, cables for semi-fixed or mobile installations and cables for underground mining, as well as open-pit mining. Detailed technical sheets for the different product lines, shown in this electrical conduc-tor catalog for mines, allow for easy identification of the construction of the product, its application, purpose and the types of facilities where its use is appropriate; there is also a specific technical sheet for each manufacturing standard governing the product line. Ad-ditionally, for each size, a very complete dimensional table is included which will support product selection with technical calculations, and each product is identified by a unique code to facilitate the ordering process.
At the end of the catalog, there is a technical section with resistance tables, ampacities, correction factors, reactance, and various electrical formulas that can be used to supple-ment the selection of electrical conductors based on their application, use and purpose, in combination with the type of facility where the electrical system will be used.
2
For the convenience of our customers, we have included a general glossary of technical terms used throughout the entire range of products, in keeping with the national regula-tory framework and that of the electrical sector.
With over 50 years of experience in research and product development, at Condumex Group [Grupo Condumex], our work is focused on the needs of our customers, and as such, we hope this catalog will be of great interest and will become a frequent technical guide when there is a need to select any type of electrical conductor for energy applica-tions as part of your project.
We invite you to visit our Website at www.condumex.com.mx, for all your cable needs, where we will happily await your comments, questions and specific needs. Your opinion and comments are very important to us.
To view our comprehensive catalog for online applications, please visit http://catalogo.condumex.com.mx, where a large section of customized application software is available, compliant with the current Official Mexican Standard for electrical installations (NOM-001-SEE-2005), thus making the visit not a mere catalog query, but a true experience in the technical selection of products in graphic and interactive form.

SELECTiON OF CONDUCTORS
Mines can be divided into two basic types: • Open pit mines.• Underground mines.
Inside the mines, electrical cables can be used in fixed and mobile installations. Cables used in fixed installations such as those in the mine shafts and mine galleries are rigid cables which do not need to be flexible and may be armored. In mobile installations (those in which the cables will be subject to movement and which will experience bend-ing and twisting), flexible cables must be used.
Figures 1 and 2 show schematic diagrams of an installation in an open pit mine and an installation in an underground mine, respectively. These figures not only illustrate the production area of the mine, but also its infrastructure, consisting of offices, workshops, processing plants, etc., which are also part of the mining complex. In Table A, details of the products are shown in the figures.
Additionally, Table 1 outlines the most common conductor applications for mines, not to limit use, but rather to be a quick selection guide.
The information set out above is for the purpose of selecting the type of cable best suited for the application, taking into account that it must meet the required mechanical and electrical characteristics, but in no way substituting experience and regulations (where applicable).
It is important to note that in selecting the type of cable for an application, the cable operat-ing voltage should always be greater than, or equal to, the system’s phase-to-phase voltage.
Another aspect to consider, when making a selection, is to try to use cables with ground conductors for grounding the equipment (types G, G-GC, MP- GC, SHD-GC, as well as vertical riser mining applications and borehole and vertical riser mining applications with ground conductors), in order to protect personnel from electric shock. These cables prevent the occurrence of dangerous voltages in the housings of the equipment which can cause injury to personnel. Types G-GC, MP-GC and SHD-GC cables also offer greater safety, by way of the ground check “GC” conductor, ensuring continuity of the ground-ing of equipment. This is carried out as follows: a small independent current is passed through the ground check conductor in the direction of the load, and then sent back through the ground conductor; if this current is interrupted, as in the case of rupture of the ground conductor, the circuit breaker operates automatically and energy is eliminated from the cable.

Minimum size for current carrying capacityBelow are tables for determining the minimum size of conductor cables for mines, where the current-carrying capacity is indicated (the maximum power that can be transmitted by the cables without exceeding the maximum allowable temperature in the conductor which is determined by the insulation properties), depending on the size of the conductor for different types of cables. These tables take into account the following:
• The cables are installed in free air.• The installation consists of a single cable or multiple cables with a separation
between them which is greater than, or equal to, twice the external diameter of the cables.
If the installation consists of several cables with a separation between them that is less than indicated or if the cables are installed in ducts or directly buried, please consult our Technical Department about the appropriate current-carrying capacity.

Minimum size for voltage drop For the equipment to operate correctly, it is recommended that the voltage drop, or the voltage in the circuits that supply them, does not exceed the following:
• 3% in branch circuits.• 2% in feeder circuits.• A total of 5% in feeder circuits plus any other branch circuit.
The significance of the branch and feeder circuits is as follows:
• Branch circuits: Circuit conductors formed between the last over-current device pro-tecting the circuit and the connected load(s).
• Feeder: These are all the conductors either included in the service equipment, or the source of a separate branched system, and the last over-current device of the branch circuit.
To calculate the voltage drop, the following approximate formulas are used, which always give a value greater than, or equal to, the actual voltage drop, so that in utilizing them there is a safety margin, the value of which depends on the load power factor:
For single phase systems:
For direct current systems:
For three-phase systems:
Where:
ΔV = is the voltage drop in the cable, in per centI = is the electrical current flowing through the conductor, in AL = is the length of the circuit in kmV0 = is the phase to neutral voltage, in V Vff = is the voltage between phases, in VZ = is the electrical impedance of the cable, in ohm/km
∆V= 2ZLIV0
x 100 ...Volts
∆V= 2RLIVff
x 100 ...Volts
∆V= √3ZLIVff
x 100 ...Volts
51
The electrical impedance of cable Z, expressed in ohm/km, is arrived at by the following formula:
Where:
R = is the electrical resistance of the conductor to the alternating current (AC) and the operating temperature, in ohm/km
XL = is the Inductive reactance of the conductor, in ohm/km
Below are tables that provide values for R and XL. If the voltage drop value, calculated
using the formula mentioned above, exceeds the maximum indicated at the beginning of this section, a conductor with a larger section which would fulfill these requirements should be considered.

Minimum size for short-circuit All cables are exposed to short-circuit conditions, and it is important that the cables are maintained to avoid having to replace them, in situations of this type.
During a short circuit, the current is greatly elevated, and as a result the heat generated in the conductor by the Joule effect (I2R) is very high. This causes the temperature of the conductor to increase, reaching values that may affect the properties of the surrounding materials, which is usually the case with insulation.
In a short circuit, the insulation can withstand temperatures far higher than during nor-mal or continuous operation, since the duration of a short circuit is very brief (usually less than three seconds), and subsequent cooling is very rapid. The maximum insulation temperatures mine cables can withstand in short circuit conditions are shown in the fol-lowing table:
Table 16
Material Maximum short circuit temperature (ºC)
PVC 150
EPR 250
Below are graphs to be utilized in selecting the minimum size conductor, based on the current and duration of the short circuit (the latter must be provided by an electrical systems designer) to avoid exceeding the maximum temperature that the insulation can withstand under these conditions.
A practical equivalence between the circular mil and one square millimeter is: 1 mm2 = 1,973.5 cmil
