Welcome to the 2018 Marketing Hall of Fame!
We are thrilled to “Celebrate Brilliance in Marketing,” with the induction of three outstanding marketers to the 2018 Marketing Hall of Fame.
Our 2018 inductees are true innovators in marketing. In very different ways, each has helped to move marketing forward to the future - creating new ways of things and working to transform marketing to meet the demands of a changing world, full of new players, new technologies, and new structures.
The Marketing Hall of Fame mission is to inspire, support and celebrate brilliance in marketing, grow recognition and passion for the profession, and attract new generations to the field.
We can think of no better way to support this mission than to recognize the outstanding contributions of three leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary achievements, not just in one campaign, for one brand, or at one organization, but across their careers. Please join us in congratulating: Lee Clow, Chairman, TBWA\Media Arts Lab & Director of Media Arts, TBWA\Worldwide; Esther Lee, Executive Vice President, Global Chief Marketing Officer, MetLife, Inc.; and Seth Godin Best-Selling Author and Speaker.
A year of planning and significant effort have gone into this. More people have contributed their time and passion than ever before. The marketing community has been involved across all disciplines and all levels – from our passionate and dedicated volunteers, to the 250 senior marketers who are members of the Marketing Hall of Fame Academy, to our distinguished Judging Panel, comprised of a select group of industry leaders, and of course this year’s sponsors, who provide essential support. Every year, the event is bigger, the support greater, the PR and social media conversation broader and more global.
We want to express our thanks to all of them. We would not be here tonight without them. Especial thanks to the leaders of our 2018 Marketing Hall of Fame Committee: Priya Doty, our executive director, Senior Director Solutions Marketing, CA Technologies, Lee Hornick, President, Business Communications Worldwide; Jack Mello PR, Lukas Pospichal, managing director, AMA New York and GreenBook; Cristiano Andreotti, Independent Creative Director; Molly Purcell, Marketing and Administrative Coordinator, AMA New York; Joshua Bruner, Director of Communications, The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church; Nancy Cardenas, Account Manager, GreenBook and AMA New York; Skyla Li, MS Candidate in Integrated Marketing, New York University; Matt Quint, Director, Center on Global Brand Leadership, Columbia Business School; Don Sexton, Professor of Marketing, Columbia Business School; and Spencer Schrage, Global Director, Business Operations, OgilvyRED

TO THE 2018 MARKETING HALL OF FAME®
WELCOME
The Marketing Hall of Fame® was established in 1993 by the AMA New York to recognize and honor brands that reached iconic status through sustained success in the marketplace. One classic brand and one current brand were honored each year by the AMA New York at the Effie Awards. Some of the brands inducted over the years include: Coca-Cola, Apple, Nike and Barbie. In fact, the Effies were also created and run for many years by the AMA New York. In 2014 we changed the format to focus on the people behind the brands. This reflects today’s reality. Marketing is one of the most dynamic and important contributors to creating value, in part due to disruptive digital technology, storytelling and co-creating with consumers.
The Marketing Hall of Fame® is one way the AMA New York aligns our mission with the future of marketing.
ELECTION CRITERIA The Marketing Hall of Fame® recognizes outstanding innovators in the field of marketing, and encourages future generations of marketers to follow in their steps. Recognition is given to individual marketing innovators. They can come from any marketing discipline—they can be CMOs or Marketing Directors, work in advertising, branding or research agencies, or be academics, journalists, or other marketing experts. In keeping with the spirit of marketing, the awards are contemporary. The awards are for current active marketing practitioners. Inductees must have been in the profession at least ten years. The initial focus is on North America, but nominations are accepted globally.
ACHIEVEMENTS THAT ARE RECOGNIZED INCLUDE:• Marketing that works: Demonstrated use of marketing to drive business results (e.g. dramatically grow sales)• Marketing that raises the profile of the discipline: Increasing the influence of marketing (e.g. getting a seat on the board, expanding to innovation)• Marketing that is innovative: e.g. Pioneers of social media, inventors of new forms of marketing research/measurement• Marketing that inspires others: Both staff and the next generations of marketers
THE ELECTION PROCESSThe election process is designed to be inclusive and open, while also drawing on the expertise of distinguished marketing leaders. An open call-for- entries last fall, involving AMA New York members and wider circles of marketers, drew over 150 highly qualified individuals. The Marketing Hall of Fame committee chaired by Bob Kahn examined the achievements of each nominee against our four criteria, and narrowed the list to 50 nominees.
This short list was sent to the 250+ members of The Marketing Hall of Fame Academy, an exclusive group of senior marketing professionals handpicked by the AMA New York board from the corporate, agency and academic worlds.
The Academy members’ votes determined the top 12 final contenders.
A stellar Panel of Judges representing the industry’s leading associations and organizations then reviewed the dozen finalists and picked this year’s 3 inductees.

LEE CLOW
LEE CLOWCHAIRMAN, TBWA\MEDIA ARTS LAB & DIRECTOR OF MEDIA ARTS, TBWA\WORLDWIDE
For the past 40 years, Lee Clow has told stories through advertising for some of the most well-known brands in the world. His creative career began with Chiat\Day and its humble beginnings at a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Today, he is the Director of Media Arts for TBWA\Worldwide and the Founder and Chairman of TBWA\Media Arts Lab, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2016. Lee believes advertising is an art, a media art, that evokes emotion in consumers to make them laugh, cry, surprise or inform and his work does exactly that. His portfolio includes memorable campaigns for brands like Gatorade, Pepsi, Adidas, and Energizer.
But Lee’s impact on the industry can best be summarized by his partnership with Steve Jobs for more than 30 years producing work for Apple. Togther with Apple he supported the launch of the 1984 Macintosh and the “Think Different” campaign, which evolved and set the direction for the iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Today, Media Arts Lab works exclusively on Apple, breaking barriers and challenging the industry with what Lee calls the “New Storytelling.”

You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes and The Dip. Permission Marketing changed direct marketing forever, and Purple Cow is considered one of the most influential marketing books of its time.
Seth has given thousands of speeches to millions of people around the world, and his five TED talks continue to spread.
In addition to his writing and speaking, Seth has founded several companies, including Yoyodyne and Squidoo. His blog (which you can find by typing “seth” into Google) is one of the most popular in the world.

ESTHER LEE
ESTHER LEEEXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT, GLOBAL CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER, METLIFE, INC.
Esther Lee’s career has been grounded in an imperative to define brands and develop marketing that create maximum value for both the company and the customers it serves. This has been evident throughout her career, particularly in her roles as Global Chief Creative Officer at The Coca-Cola Company; Senior Vice President for Brand, Marketing, Advertising and Sponsorships at AT&T; and now, Global Chief Marketing Officer at MetLife. In these roles, she has worked to infuse customer insights into engagement strategies that drive business growth.
In her early career, she held several leadership positions at advertising agencies, including large global networks and smaller entrepreneurial shops like DiNoto Lee, the agency she co-founded. Today, as MetLife’s EVP Global Chief Marketing Officer, she is responsible for managing all aspects of global marketing, the global brand and the customer journey. She is leading the company’s marketing transformation, elevating marketing from a “sales support” function to a strategic business driver, and implementing a new customer-insight-led process across all the global businesses and markets. Esther also currently serves on the Board of the Clorox Company, the Advisory Board of the Kairos Society and the Board of the MetLife Foundation.
Allen Adamson, Brandsimple
While we all do our best to make sense of a world in which incessant change is the norm, marketers have an extra challenge; staying ahead of the tsunami of cultural, technological, political, and environmental transformations in order to satisfy the evolving needs of the audiences they want to attract. With this challenge in mind, I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk to this year’s three Marketing Hall of Fame New York inductees, Lee Clow, Seth Godin, and Esther Lee. Each is being celebrated for their outstanding personal contributions to advancing the marketing industry, as well as for the insight and inspiration they continue to provide to the next generation of marketers. Winning this honor is bestowed not as the result of a one-off initiative but, rather, for sustained achievement. What I wanted to explore in my conversations with these marketing legends was what it takes to drive long-term success, what has fueled their ability to stay on top year after year, in the face of unprecedented marketplace disruption.
What I learned was that while each honoree comes from a different discipline within the industry and possess a different set of skills, they share one critical attribute beyond their tenure in the field. They all recognize that marketing success for the long term is not the result of chasing the latest shiny new object, be it tools, tactics, or channels. Rather, it’s being able to quickly and adeptly assess the changes at play at a specific moment in time to build a simple, honest human connection between brand and consumer.
“I’m being inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame and, technically, I’m an advertising person,” Clow told me during our conversation. “I’m very proud of the fact that I have worked with and helped create brands as a total marketing experience, not just making advertising for them. The people who can find the simple, honest human connections in their brand building are the ones who will be most successful. The good creative people are the ones who have a particular ability to touch some human truth. Even in the midst of all the new media, you have to put something out there that resonates with consumers. In this transparent, interactive world we live in, the audience has the right to give you a thumbs up or thumbs down. Asking Clow about his time with Steve Jobs and the award-winning work he did for Apple, he said, “It was rewarding to feel like your responsibility was to keep tabs on where the world was going, drawing from that understanding to tap into something relevant that connects with people. You have to find the emotional center of a brand and once you do it becomes kind of like your ‘true north.’ Knowing ‘who’ you are as a brand versus ‘what you do’ is a critical way to manage rapid change. At Apple, it was the litmus test of knowing exactly where we were going. Lots of things may change, but keeping your eye on true north keeps you pointed in the right direction for the brand. It gives you the ability to look at any marketing gesture and say, ‘Hey, that isn’t true to where we’re going, who we want to be, who we are.”
Seth Godin, best-selling author and former dot com business executive, has also spent a good part of his career assessing the importance of the “who we are,’ not “what we do”, factor when it comes to maintaining brand credibility and connectivity with consumers. Or, as he wrote on a recent blog, “The web is littered with easy promises.” During our conversation, he told me, “You have to be prepared to be on the hook. You have to make a clear, simple promise and be willing to be held responsible for this promise year after year. Marketing continues to be not about you, or your product, it’s about them. You need to focus on ideas that resonate with humanity. While everyone is running after the next thing, thinking they’re onto what’s next, I like to focus on the thing that’s hiding in plain sight, something right in front of us, and explain why it’s happening and the implications for the future. If something is working, I need to have a thesis as to why. If you don’t have an explanation, than you can’t pretend to understand marketing and the human dynamic or behavior.”

“THE PEOPLE WHO CAN FIND THE SIMPLE, HONEST HUMAN CONNECTIONS IN THEIR BRAND BUILDING ARE THE ONES WHO WILL BE MOST SUCCESSFUL” - LEE CLOW
“MARKETING CONTINUES TO BE NOT ABOUT YOU, OR YOUR PRODUCT, IT’S ABOUT THEM. YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON IDEAS THAT RESONATE WITH HUMANITY.” - SETH GODIN

PAST MHoF INDUCTEES
With a career trajectory that has included major roles and major successes in global advertising, branding strategy, and marketing, Esther Lee has a multidimensional perspective on how to position a company for long-term growth. “The tools we use have always changed,” she said in our discussion. “Businesses are changing. Companies are facing the same disruptions in emerging technologies, societal change, economic and regulatory change. That said, the fundamental role of marketing within a business has remained constant. It’s evergreen. I see brands and marketing as the emotional meeting ground between a company and its customers. The truth that I’ve always seen, whether it’s been working in advertising or on a whole go-to-market solution, is really understanding the fundamental hopes, fears, and dreams of customers and figuring out how to successfully navigate the internal business conversation to elevate the customer in the consideration of everything we do. You have a North Star, a framework within which to operate, even though the ingredients may change. Relative to the speed of change, our job today is to get insights faster, to connect the dots faster in order to deliver what our customers need.”
The world is only going to continue to change with unprecedented speed. This means that marketers today – and those in future generations – would be well served by heeding the insight and inspiration of Lee Clow, Seth Godin, and Esther Lee. What these new inductees into the Marketing Hall of Fame recognize is that even though the “ingredients” may change, that myriad factors will shift and fluctuate, one thing is constant when it comes to on-going marketing success. Whether it’s achieved by identifying an “emotional center,” or an “emotional meeting ground,” the simple secret to success is the ability to forge a human connection. To do this year in and year out means keeping a laser focus on the customer.
“COMPANIES ARE FACING DISRUPTIONS IN EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, SOCIETAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGE. THE FUNDAMENTAL ROLE OF MARKETING WITHIN A BUSINESS HAS RE-MAINED CONSTANT. IT’S EVERGREEN.” - ESTHER LEE
