Information, Communication and Learning Technologies

The developments in information technology provides enormous opportunities for St Peter’s College to create dynamic and engaging digital environments, allowing students, parents, staff and the wider Saints community to form a 21st century learning community. Our vision is to foster the integration of ICLT throughout the School, delivering an agile, innovative and effective Teaching and Learning environment.

Strategic Planning

A three year ICLT Strategic Plan was developed in late 2010 that considers all facets of the use of information technology throughout the School. It is a high level and dynamic plan that acts as a framework for decision making and reflects the significant commitment of the School towards developing a visionary learning community.

St Peter’s College has maintained a significant investment in Information Technology over the past twenty years. This has included investments in technical infrastructure, human resources and online resources.

To ensure the long-term sustainability of ICLT at Saints, eight strategies (or core pillars) outlined in this document, have been produced to guide any strategic decision-making. The eight strategies provide an appropriate degree of flexibility to accommodate contemporary, future trends and technologies over the life of the strategic plan.

Information, Communication and Learning Technologies

To develop confidence in using a diverse range of technologies, Saints provides users with support structures that satisfy their individual needs. While structured formal training is important, the notion of ‘just in time’ support is also crucial for a vibrant digital environment to be realised.

The key components of the digital confidence program are:

1. Support for our students

Keystone Support Centres have been established in the Junior and Senior Schools. These centres are staffed 8:00am - 4:30pm each school day to provide proactive and reactive support for our users.

These Centres are the human face of hardware and software support providing users with confidence that support is available at the point of need.

2. Support for our staff

Fourteen staff from across all sections of the School have been appointed to the position of ICLT Lead Teacher. These staff have been involved in professional development programs facilitated by Beyond Chalk and are charged with the responsibility of sharing their skills with their colleagues.

In addition to the Lead Teacher program, time is allocated to the entire staff at the beginning of each term for compulsory training in the integration of ICLT into the Teaching and Learning programs.

3. Support for our parents

Throughout the year we invite parents to various information sessions to support the development of their digital confidence. These programs have a heavy emphasis on raising awareness and practical examples of the technology in action. Focus for 2012 are:

• Introducing the Mac

• The Mac at Home - Parental Controls

• Introducing Keystone

• Creating a Smart House

• Social networking

Digital Confidence In The Classroom

Mobile Technology Program

The School is in the process of realising a Mobile Technology Program that will provide students with ready access to technology at the point of need.

This Program is a cost share model. The School will provide a wireless network infrastructure, education software and electronic resources and parents provide a compatible MacBook.

This Program is being phased in during 2011 and 2012.

Years 7, 8, 11 and 12 students were introduced to the program during Terms 1 and 2 of 2011 with Years 6, 9 and 10 joining the program in Term 1, 2012.

eBooks

During 2011 the School partnered with Campion Education to trial the use of electronic text books in Years 11 and 12 in both the SACE and IB programs.

As part of the trial every boy was issued with an iPad at the beginning of 2011, to be used to read the eBooks.

Saints is developing Keystone, an information system that is designed to support the realisation of a dynamic digital community through the enhancement of communication, automation of workflows and most importantly, place the user at the centre of the experience.

What this means for students?

From the beginning of 2012, our students will have their homework tasks recorded online, pastoral care communication will be tracked and available in real time and our boys will have the opportunity to share digital content.

During the first half of 2012 we will be providing every parent with their own login details to interact with this system.

Acquiring Hardware

To allow ready access to affordable ICLT resources, the School has partnered with the authorised Apple reseller, Xcite Logic to provide an online store for our immediate community. Once an order has been placed, Xcite Logic will arrange for the equipment to be delivered to the School. On receipt of the order, the Keystone Support Centre will preconfigure the equipment so it is ready for use within our program and advise when the order can be collected from the Keystone Support Centre. As part of this partnership the School is also a registered Apple Repair Centre to allow any repairs or warranty work to be conducted on site.

Acquiring Software

Any software required to support the Teaching and Learning program is provided as part of the ICLT levy. Students can download this software via the self service application. Some applications are required to be removed once a student’s enrolment with the School ceases. Applications include, Microsoft Office, iLife, iWork and an array of subject specific applications.

Accessories

The online store includes a range of discounted ICLT accessories which are associated with the laptop computer including bags, portable hard drives and headphones. In addition to these items, the store also provides access to items which support the Parent Digital Confidence program, for example wireless router / modem, including parental controls and access to laptop insurance and purchasing programs.
