¿Qué hora es?The third-person singular of ser is used with one o’clock since it is just one hour (hora).

The singular definite article is used for the same reason.

All hours of the day are feminine in Spanish.

¿Qué hora es?The third-person plural of ser is used with all hours after one o’clock.

Likewise, the plural definite article is used for all hours after one o’clock.

Time Formulas

• #1 Son las (or Es la) hour y minute.– Use when the minute hand is between 0-30

• Ex: It is 8:10 = Son las ocho y diez.

• Ex: It is 2:25 = Son las dos y veinticinco.

• #2 Son las (or Es la) hour +1 menos minutes left.– Use when the minute hand is between 31-59

• Ex: It is 9:40 = Son las diez menos veinte.

• Ex: It is 2:42 = Son las tres menos dieciocho.

• en punto – on the dot– Ex: Son las tres en punto = It’s 3:00 on the dot.

• y media – half past the hour – ALWAYS use when the minute hand is on the :30

– Ex: 5:30 = Son las cinco y media.

– Ex: 1:30 = Es la una y media.

• cuarto – quarter before/after the hour (15 minutes)

– Ex: 9:15 = Son las nueve y cuarto.– Ex: 7:45 = Son las ocho menos cuarto.

Other Important Time Vocab

• de la mañana– a.m. / in the morning– Ex: Son las tres de la mañana= It’s 3:00 a.m.

– **de la madrugada – in the EARLY morning/crack of dawn

• de la tarde– p.m. (afternoon)– Ex: Son las tres de la tarde= It’s 3:00 p.m. or It’s 3:00 in the afternoon.

– Approximately 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

• de la noche – p.m. (night)– Ex: Son las siete de la noche = It’s 7:00 p.m. or It’s 7:00 at

night.

– Approximately 6:00 p.m.- midnight
