LOS USOS DEL SUBJUNTIVO EN EL PRESENTE

*Se refiere al presente incierto o futuro incierto

*Consiste en : “Verb base” + “Verb ending” (simple)

• *Hay que usar el subjuntivo en estos casos:

• 1) Desire

• 2)Ignorance

• 3) Emotional statement or comment

• 4) Impersonal opinion/expression *

• 5) Uncompleted action

• 6) Vague or indefinite antecedent

• 7) Perhaps or maybe *

• 8) “Even if”

EJEMPLOS DE SUBJUNTIVO (EN CONTEXTO)

* You have only worked with indicative sentences (that report or indicate things)

Ej: I know that you speak Spanish. I live with my cousins. I like to dance.

^ The speaker is certain of something/reporting information

*In subjunctive there is a hint of uncertainity/unpredictability

Ej: I hope that you speak Spanish. I wish that I lived with my cousins. I doubt he likes to dance.

FORMACIÓN DEL SUBJUNTIVO 1) Begin in the YO form in the present indictative *

OJO!!! Note that there is no stem change in the NOSOTROS AND VOSOTROS FORMS of stem-changers except for –IR stem-changing verbs.

2. IGNORANCE (IGNORANCIA) Ej:

I doubt that he lives here.

I don’t think that she knows my name.

She doesn’t believe that you live here.

IGNORANCIA Verbs in the main clause that express ignorance or doubt will set up the need for subjunctive.

I doubt that you do your homework. Yo dudo que tú hagas la tarea.

He fears that she knows. Él teme que ella sepa.

IGNORANCIA

Dudar que= to doubt that

No creer que = to not believe

No estar convencido/a de que= to not be convinced that

No estar seguro/a de que= to not be sure that

No pensar que= to not think that

Temer que= To suspect/fear

OJO Most of these verbs that show ignorance/doubt are used in the negative. (ej: no estar seguro/a que). They set up subjunctive in the subordinate clause. However, the same verbs if affirmative cans et up the indicative in the subordinate clause.

Negative/subjunctive: I don’t think that Juan has the money.

Yo no creo que Juan tenga el dinero.

I doubt that Juan has the money.

Yo dudo que Juan tenga el dinero.

Affirmative/Indicative: I believe that Juan has the money

Yo creo que Juan tiene el dinero

3. EMOTIONAL COMMENTS OR STATEMENTS(COMENTARIOS O DECLARACIONES EMOCIONALES)

I’m happy that you’re the president of Spanish club.

He’s sad that I’m the principal.

They’re delighted that we’re here.

(COMENTARIOS O DECLARACIONES EMOCIONALES) Emotions color the truth of a situation and introduce a degree of uncertainty. You must state the emotion, add “que” and then the subjunctive is needed.

6. VAGUE OR INDEFINITE ANTECEDENT(ANTECEDENTE INDEFINIDO) When the object or person being referedd to in the main clause is not known to actually exist (indefinite antecedent) then subjunctive is required.

Clauses are introduced by the words “perhaps” or “maybe” are cloaked in uncertainity. They require subjunctive.

Acaso, quizá(s), tal vez= perhaps/maybe (used interchangeably)

Ej: Perhaps he wont call me. Quizás él no me llame

8. AUNQUE

Aunque is the Spanish Word for “even if”, “although”, and “even though”. When the action has yet occured or is not known to be occuring, aunque sets up subjunctive.
