de Comercio Kissimmee/Osceola llevó a cabo un debate para los candidatos que aspiran a ocupar los puestos disponibles en la Comisión de la Ciudad de Kissimmee el jueves, 21 de junio. Este fue el primero de una serie de debates a realizarse antes de las elecciones del 2012.El evento se realizó en la

County Chamber of Commerce hosted a debate for the candidates vying for a City of Kissimmee Commission seat on June 21st. This was the first of a series of debates before the 2012 elections. The event was held at the Commission Chamber,

Kissimmee City Hall. This event was free and open to the public. The debate was taped for broadcast on Access Osceola and can be watched on Brighthouse Channel 199.The candidates running to fill positions in the Board

of Kissimmee City Commissioners, were scrutinized by a panel formed by Brian McBride, Assistant Editor of the Osceola News-Gazette, and Jorge “George” Perez, staff’s member of El Osceola Star Newspaper. Florida State Legislator, and President of the Kissimmee Chamber of Commerce, Mike Horner was the debate’s moderator.Candidates were asked a large range of questions,

from how to help existing businesses and how to attract new businesses to the city; how to increase the air traffic and revenue from the local airport; their opinions related to the installation of red light

cameras; the possibility of increasing diversity among management personnel in Kissimmee; whether to increase taxes and fees without a citizen referendum; how to help the homeless; and what kind of businesses to attract to the city, among other questions.Candidates present were Jose A. Alvarez, Debra L.

Rosado, Robert Wayne Secrest, and Dave Scherer for Seat 1. Mike Stuart DeLong, Carmelo E. Garcia, Jaime Matos, Hector Rodriguez, Sara Katherine Shaw, and Druvonda Woods, for Seat 3. The debate was divided in two sessions, one for each seat to fill.All the candidates agreed on the need to increase the

economical base of Kissimmeewith the expansion and creation of businesses; it was mentioned that the airport is in the process of extending its runway, and should consider establishing charter flights from the continental United States, and Puerto Rico. The Medical City at Lake Nona and the two local hospitals could help Kissimmee in the creation of new technical and health related businesses. All the candidates are opposed to increase taxes and fees, and considered that having a referendum for its approval or rejection would be too expensive. Jose Alvarez said governments have expenditure problems, and the city should adjust its expenses

to its revenues. Carmelo E. Garcia said the people elect their commissioners for taking decision that they consider appropriate, among them raising or reducing taxes and fees, and referendum should not be considered due to their cost.The majority of the candidates are in favor of the

installation of red light cameras, in order to reduce accidents and save lives, but Dave Scherer is not sure that the red light cameras would reduce accidents and save lives, and he is concerned about the legal costs that the city might incur defending itself against motorist’s demands. Druvonda Woods indicated that the monetary benefit is small, but many service institutions will benefit with the fines charged on the infractions. The candidates form a group of citizens, that have

a variety of skills and experiences, with a great interest in making the city a proud one to live in, and whoever are elected can be expected to do their best to enhance the qualities of life of the citizens in Kissimmee.Mark your calendar for another upcoming political

Kissimmee, FL – La mañana del jueves 28 de junio marcó la llegada de un transformador eléctrico de alto voltaje a la Subestación de Kissimmee Utility Authority en Clay Street, Kissimmee. El transformador de 231,000 libras reemplaza al que fue destruido en la explosión de la subestación el pasado agosto. El transformador de 230,000/69,000 voltios llegó a Kissimmee por tren y fue

movido a la subestación por un camión especial de arrastre. El transformador fue movido de la Avenida A a la US 17-92, y desde Hoagland Blvd. a Clay Street a Dawes Ave. Los agentes del Condado Osceola asistieron con el movimiento.A pesar de que se ha realizado

marks the arrival of a high-voltage electrical transformer to Kissimmee Utility Authority’s Clay Street Substation in Kissimmee. The 231,000-pound transformer replaces one that was destroyed in an explosion at the substation last August.The 230,000/69,000-volt transformer

arrived in Kissimmee by rail and will be moved to the substation by special hauling truck Thursday morning, between the hours of 9-11 a.m. The transformer will be moved from Avenue A to US 17-92, then to Hoagland Blvd. to Clay Street to Dawes Ave. Osceola

County deputies will be assisting with the move.Motorists are advised of potential

traffic delays and should be aware that when movers are crossing the Shingle Creek Bridge, they will need to be the only vehicle on the bridge, and will be moving at a speed limit of 3 mph. Traffic will be stopped for approximately 10 minutes, causing delays on Hoagland Blvd., Old Tampa Hwy., and Clay Street.Although extensive investigation

has been ongoing since the accident, the parties involved are still trying to determine its cause.

2, 1980, Carmelo was raised in the Bronx and is the second eldest of four brothers. Carmelo was brought up by his single mother who was attending college while working to provide for her four boys. Never giving up on her studies Evelyn graduated with high honors from Hostos Community College with a degree in gerontology, giving Carmelo the inspiration he needed to go through life following in his mother’s footsteps. At the early age of 16 Carmelo served as an Auxiliary Police Officer in the 40th precinct. Carmelo was also into politics at a young age. He served as a poll watcher in the 32nd Council district in the Bronx for councilman Pedro G. Espada, and then for his father Pedro Espada Jr., as he was elected the State Senator of N.Y. Carmelo soon would realize his calling to help people in need while serving in a not-for-profit organization in the Bronx amongst the 9-11 tragedy of the world Trade Center. Carmelo served as a chaplain giving relief to police officers, fire fighters and emergency response teams as they helped the trapped victims of the WTC. In August of 2006 Carmelo moved to

Florida where he lived in Siesta Lago and was employed at the Marriott in Orlando. In February of 2008 he commenced his educational journey at Everest University as a Business student; Carmelo has earned his

degree in Business Administration in May of 2011 graduating with a 3.4 GPA. While in school Carmelo achieved a leadership position in an honors program called “Igniter Ambassadors” where he helped resolve many community and school issues.Currently Carmelo operates a not for

profit organization (C.I.A. Christians in Action) that is dedicated to helping the citizens of Kissimmee and anyone who needs assistance. Carmelo will launch his company in the year 2012 which will create jobs in Kissimmee. Currently he is running for County Commissioner, a position that he believes will help him make Osceola County, which he has adopted as HOME, a better place to live and raise a family.Life has been hard and many

Heart of Florida United Way Directs $5.6 Million in Funds

changed because the district lines have changed. We have selected the most convenient and accessible locations in Osceola County for polling locations,’’ said Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington. “We have worked hard on making sure the changes are in the best interest of the voters.’’ Due to the redistricting changes,

Arrington said she wanted to make

sure voters are aware of any location changes and is sending new Voter Information cards to every registered voter in the county. “We will be sending out new cards.

It will have the voter’s name and address, their political party, the polling location and address as well as their precinct number. It will also have their Congressional, Senate, House, School Board and County Commission districts on the card,’’ Arrington said. The Elections Office has started a

Check Your Voter Status program where voters are asked to make sure their information is up-to-date. Voters who have changed their names or

addresses need to make sure the Elections office has the most recent information. Over time a person’s signature changes and voters are asked to update that as well if it has changed. Early Voting for the August 14, 2012

Primary Election will be Aug. 4-11 and will be held at six locations throughout the county. Tallahassee, FL – On June 27 a federal judge rejected a Department of Justice request to issue a temporary restraining order blocking Florida from removing non-citizens from the voter rolls and rejected DOJ’s argument that the National Voter Registration Act prohibits removal of non-citizens from the voter rolls. The court also said that permitting known non-citizens to vote would result in “irreparable harm” to eligible voters.Florida Governor Rick Scott was

pleased with the decision, which is consistent with his position that

Florida has an obligation to remove non-citizens from the voter rolls.“The court made a common-sense

decision consistent with what I’ve been saying all along: that irreparable harm will result if non-citizens are allowed to vote. This ruling puts the burden on the federal government to provide Florida with access to the Department of Homeland Security’s citizenship database. We know from just a small sample that an alarming number of non-citizens are on the voter rolls and many of them have illegally voted in past elections. The

has won his first NBA Championship since starting Pro basketball about 8 years ago. Miami definitely had the upper hand coming into Game 5 with a 3-1 advantage over the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Miami Heat defeated OKC at American Airlines Arena on Thursday, June 21, 2012, winning the NBA Finals 121-106. The young and the restless tried fighting to stay in this series, but fell a little short. LeBron James scored 26 points with 11rebounds, and assisted by Chris Bosh who scored 24 points. Kevin Durant lead OKC with 32 points and 11 rebounds, while Westbrook added 19 points.The Heat had an advantage in this series because

they played Games 3, 4, and 5 in Miami. I feel as if the Oklahoma City Thunder had to play against Miami and the referees. Did you see some of the calls they called on OKC, and clearly wouldn’t call any on Miami. You could see the frustration in the Oklahoma City players’ faces. Everything was going Miami’s way, from fouls to Miller hitting seven 3-pointers in Game 5 setting an NBA Finals record and scoring 23 points in 23 minutes. OKC tried to hold on and stay in the game, but the Heat kept driving and pushing straight to the basket taking advantage of every minute on the clock. Miami had this same experience last year of being in the NBA Finals, but lost to the Dallas Mavericks in a 4-2 game series. The Heat took what they’ve learned last year and implemented those lessons into this year’s NBA Finals and look where it got them. So what happens next, does everyone think Miami

Heat can win again next year, will the Big 3 be able to repeat history, or will OKC be able to bring on the HEAT? I think next year is a new year, lessons have been learned, and Oklahoma City has experienced, watched, and learned how they will play different next year. King James has been crowned; yes he has FINALLY won his first NBA Championship, but does the media, fans, and commentators really have to bow down to him. From newspapers, to ESPN, to various news stations all you hear is LeBron James, LeBron James, LeBron James, whatever happen to the HEAT and Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller, and the rest of the Miami Heat squad. Give credit where credit is due, but don’t be blinded on the efforts and contribution of the team players. The Miami Heat officially ended its NBA Championship

season with a Victory Parade on Monday, June 25, 2012 in the streets of Downtown Miami. Fans lined up with pots and pans, championship shirts, and waited for the Miami Heat to stroll down the road of victory. They also had a celebration rally inside the American Airlines Arena where the Heat players took turns thanking their fans for sharing this special moment with them. The championship trophy became the centerpiece of Monday’s festivities, a winning symbol that put a cap to almost two years of high-profile drama and two months of playoff intensity. The celebration is over and now it’s time to start preparing for next year, can Miami bring the HEAT next season? We will see when the 2012-2013 NBA season begins on Tuesday, October 30, 2012.

Sheriff’s detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying a sex battery suspect. On June 25, Osceola County Sheriff’s

deputies took a report regarding a possible sex battery. According to the female victim, on June 24 at approximately 4:30 a.m. she was leaving her job at Smokey Bones Restaurant located at 2911 Vineland Road in Kissimmee. As she was walking toward the bus stop, an unknown male

approached her from behind and held a gun to her back. He told her to keep walking and directed her to the west end of the Rock Church where he sexually battered her prior to leaving the area on foot.The victim describes the suspect as a

Hispanic male, approximately 30 years old, 6’0” tall and 180 lbs. He speaks English with a slight Spanish accent. He had shaved hair along the front hairline with a curly ponytail in the back and heavy

hair on his arms and legs. He was wearing denim shorts, a dark colored shirt, black sneakers and white socks.Anyone with information is asked to call

Kissimmee Man Arrested after pointing a gun at an OfficerKissimmee, FL – A Kissimmee man is charged with

aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer and is in the Osceola County jail held on no bond.On June 20, 2012 at approximately 12:30 a.m.,

officers were in the area of John Young Parkway and Lake Tivoli apartment community looking for a loitering and prowling suspect. The officer located a suspect matching the description of the prowler and attempted to make contact with him, later identified as Carlos Alfredo Hernandez Torres (D.O.B. 3/11/94). Torres turned from the officer and pulled an H&R .32 caliber revolver out of his waistband and pointed it directly at the officer. Torres did not fire the weapon and fled from the officer.Additional officers responded to the scene and set up a

perimeter. A canine track led officers to 1205 Bermuda Lakes Lane in The Gables apartment community. Officers located Torres sitting near the top of the staircase leading to apartment 205. Torres was taken into custody without further incident. Carlos Alfredo Hernandez Torres was charged with
