As I write this Welcome, we are in the middle of summer in Rincón. Th e weather has been quite beautiful. Yes, it rains in the afternoon which gives us a reason to read in a hammock or take a nap. If it gets too hot, I recommend the new inverter air-conditioners. My electric bill dropped by $100.00 a month with the new technology.

Speaking of technology, with my granddaughter to lead the way, I have explored the world of “Droid” vs. iPhone and my only comment is that people with 4 G (either iPhone which means 4th generation or Droid 4 G which means a 4G network) are not compatible with us old 3 G’ers. I personally think it is a cell phone company plot to make us all switch from phones that we love to something else we will have to learn!

Th e Coqui events page should be back in working order by the time you read this. Your new managing editor, Annie Villalba and Media Development, Isabel Maxwell (see their email addresses and phone numbers in the masthead below) have lots of ideas to make the WebPages more functional in regard to communication of events for Rincón. Th ey welcome your suggestions which are best delivered by email or text.

It is hard to believe that school will have begun by the time you read this. Or that our tourist season will begin in late October. Time does fl y when you are having fun!

Al tiempo de escribir esta bienvenida, nos encontramos en medio del verano en Rincón. El clima ha estado hermosísimo. Sí, siempre llueve por las tardes. Esto nos da una razón para acostarnos en la hamaca a leer o a tomar una siesta. Y si se pone muy caliente les recomiendo los nuevos aires acondicionados inverter. Mi cuenta de electricidad se redujo por la cantidad de $100 al mes con esta nueva tecnología.

Y hablando de tecnología, y con la asistencia de mi nieta, he examinado el mundo de los “Droids” vs. los I-phones, y mi único comentario es que el tipo 4G de cualquiera de estos dos teléfonos (que signifi ca 4ta generación del I-phone o red 4G del Droid) no es compatible con los antiguos 3G. Yo personalmente opino que esta es una confabulación de las compañías de teléfonos celulares para obligarnos a cambiar nuestros teléfonos que nos gustan y sabemos manejar por algo que vamos a tener que aprender de nuevo.

La página de eventos de El Coquí ya estará en pleno funcionamiento al tiempo de esta edición. Annie Villalba, nuestra nueva gerente editorial, e Isabel Maxwell, la gerente de desarrollo de media, (encontrarán sus correos electrónicos y números de teléfono en el encasillado en la parte inferior de esta página) tienen muchas ideas para hacer nuestras páginas de internet mas funcionales en relación a la divulgación de eventos en Rincón. Sus sugerencias son bienvenidas. Puede enviarlas en forma de texto o en un correo electrónico.

greets me with a smile as she shows me her beauty salon.  “I will buy chairs for this area, and will paint this table.”  She says as she shares some of her ongoing plans to complete the decoration of the salon.  “My mom’s name was Antonia,”  she said. “I named the salon after her.  She passed away 3 years ago,” she continued with emotion.  Her motto is, “If you treat your clients right, they will come back.”  She believes in a combination of professionalism, good service and that extra touch and care.      Marilyn off ers facials, wedding packages, hotel service, permanent make-up, massages and much more.  “I was an employee at this salon and now I am the owner.  I hope to continue growing and serving my clients with the same love and dedication I have done for so many years.  And tell your readers not forget to ask about our daily specials,” she concluded.

than her age and too young to be the owner of a business. However, as soon as you speak with her, you hear such maturity, clarity, and zest that you immediately know she is the sole reason and force of De Passarella, a boutique carrying the latest in casual elegant fashion for women, shoes,perfumes,and accessories. “Originally, I did not carry clothing, but as people complimented my taste in fashion, and continued to encourage me to include those lines into my inventory, I agreed.” says Delmari. She buys only a few of each item so her customers feel they are wearing unique pieces not found everywhere. She has recently added men’s clothing, shoes, and perfumes to De Passarella. “I provide what my customers want. I pay a lot of attention to detail, helping my customers pick the right piece, accessory, gift, providing free beautiful gift wrapping for all purchases,” she says with a satisfi ed smile and continues, “I also take phone orders so my customers save time in doing their purchases.” Delmari has many plans for De Passarella, but for now, she wants to continue providing the latest in fashion with a sharp eye for detail and gusto for elegance and fi ne taste.

Lissette Marín are the powerhouse team that constitutes the LLadó & Marín Law Offi ces. After working together for the EPA in Atlanta, these two lawyers moved back to Puerto Rico when Lic. Lladó was appointed Judge of Tribunal Superior de Mayagüez. Lic. Marín was running some errands in Rincón when by chance she stopped at a law offi ce located on the Luis Muñoz Rivera Street. Th e lawyer who owned the offi ce at the time was about sell her practice. “She asked Lisette to stop by again and spend some time in the offi ce so she could evaluate if it would be a good investment,” said Lcdo. Lladó. So she did and the rest is history. Upon completion of his appointment as

Recientemente añadió ropa, calzado y perfume para caballeros a De Passarella. “Le ofrezco a mis clientes lo que piden. Presto mucha atención a los detalles ayudándoles a escoger la pieza correcta, el accesorio o el regalo apropiado, proveyéndole hermosas envolturas para regalo gratis para todas sus compras,” nos dice con una sonrisa satisfecha y continúa, “También recibo órdenes telefónicas para que mis clientes ahorren tiempo al hacer sus compras”. Delmari tiene muchos planes para De Passarella, pero por ahora ella desea continuar ofreciendo lo último en la moda con su agudeza y pasión por la elegancia y el buen gusto.

esposa Lissette Marín son el equipo vigoroso que constituye el bufette de abogados LLadó & Marín. Luego de haber laborado juntos para la Agencia de Protección Ambiental en Atlanta, estos dos abogados regresan a su natal Puerto Rico cuando el Lic. Lladó fue nombrado juez de El Tribunal Superior de Mayagüez. La Lic. Marín andaba en unas diligencias en Rincón cuando por casualidad se detuvo en una ofi cina de abogados localizada en la Calle Luis Muñoz Rivera. La dueña de dicha ofi cina estaba en gestiones de venderla. “Ella le pidió a Lisette

que regresara y pasara tiempo en la ofi cina para que evaluara si esta sería unja buena inversión”. Dice el Lic. Lladó. Así lo hizo y lo demás es historia. Una vez terminado su nombramiento, el Lic. Lladó se integra junto a su esposa a las labores de la ofi cina de abogados en Rincón. Y así se crea el bufette de abogados LLadó & Marín. En

manager and co-owner of Sandwich D’Light, says “It was my father’s dream, my mother’s determination and a great deal of hard work that created our family sandwich shop business . ” Sandwich D’Light is a colorful and clean establishment off ering an extensive menu of close to 40 diff erent kinds of sandwiches, breakfast entrees, burgers, potatoes, beverages, and pastries. It opened its doors last April and it has become an instant sensation. Th e shop in Rincón is one of 3 shops owned by Mr. Carlos Figueroa and his wife Cameron Scharar. Even though Sandwich D’Light is their third shop, “My dad had always dreamed of a Sandwich D’Light in Rincón because he says this town is beautiful, quiet, and full of opportunities,” she said. “Most of our customers get here by word of mouth. And that is what we have aimed for: a welcoming ambiance complemented with excellent service, delicious food that would make our customers leave satisfi ed, eager to return and to tell their friends.”

act of opening a bookstore could become an act of cultural reaffi rmation and resistance? It wasn’t until I spoke with Annette Blasini, Raoul de Malherbe, and Don Carlos González Valle, of the Kiosco de Libros and the Rincón Cultural Center respectively, that I was able to understand why the opening of the only general interest independent bookstore in the Western region of Puerto Rico was so important. Th is haven for the written word honors the tradition of reading at a time when technology features abbreviated conversations, and quick exchanges on the screen of a phone, electronic pad or a computer. Stopping and savoring words carefully crafted by an author in English, Spanish, or French is a pleasure that we should not lose. “We want to promote and defend the written word, the books and promote the bookstore as a pillar of our community,” said Raoul. “Books, in the printed format, are still the best way to pass on wisdom, ideas and inspiration,” added Annette. Housed at the Rincón Cultural Center,

Several months ago Elizabeth (Beth) Kramer decided that the North American communities of the Porta del Sol area on the West Coast needed some disaster preparedness training in English. Th e Tsunami in Japan only made her more concerned that perhaps our towns weren’t as ready as they thought they were and that the citizens were pretty casual about it all. She had heard about CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) – an organization funded by the Puerto Rican government through FEMA. She also learned that its training was only provided in Spanish.With her usual determination, Beth took

on the task of getting the CERT program in English for the West. It took fi fteen months and calls to Washington, DC as well as to the head of District II of FEMA. Between thirty-fi ve and fi fty English- speaking residents have been involved and trained to handle almost everything that Mother Nature can throw at us. Beth

Unos meses atrás Elizabeth (Beth) Kramer decidió que las comunidades de norteamericanos residentes en el área de Porta del Sol en el área oeste necesitaban recibir entrenamiento en preparación para desastres en inglés. El Tsunami en Japón solo aumentó su preocupación de que probablemente nuestros pueblos no estaban tan listos como pensaban y que sus ciudadanos estaban bastante relajados al respecto. organized the meetings, found the speakers and distributed the manuals. Alberto Tavarez, a bilingual paramedic volunteer from CERT was actively involved and Beth says, “We couldn’t have done it without his help”. Th e group became so enthusiastic that they decided to continue to meet every fourth Th ursday of the month at the Punta del Mar Clubhouse on Rt. 115 - left toward the beach from the restaurant Volcanos (formerly Don Raul). I like to do a version of this salad all summer, and it’s usually an ideal dish for any picnic, catering, or family gathering. (Granted, in Puerto Rico this is great all year round.)

here’s my version:

- 1 small seedless watermelon, cut into 1-inch cubes- a few tablespoons honey- a few big pinches of good feta, to your liking- a sprinkle of cayenne- a good handful of mint, ripped or fi nely diced with

a sharp knife 

Toss everything together in a big bowl and serve on a hot sunny day

El Horned Dorset Primavera ha mantenido la tradición de ofrecer música a sus huéspedes desde su apertura en el 1988. Harold Davies, y Kingsley y Roberta Wratten renovaron la propiedad localizada en la Carretera 429 en el Barrio Barrero. Ellos confi aron en que podrían convertir el HDP en un lugar de visita para el viajero sofi sticado que buscaba un lugar elegante en

un ambiente tropical rural. Roberta, (esposa de Kingsley y madre del Chef Aaron Wratten cuyo nombre ostenta el Restaurant Aaron) era maestra y músico. Kingsley era artista y maestro, y Harold era escritor y profesor de literatura. (Esto fue lo que creó el rumor en el pueblo de que “¡Tres maestros están construyendo un hotel en Barrero!”) Así comenzó la tradición musical: Roberta, una pianista de concierto,

instaló un piano en el salón comedor del segundo piso para así tener un lugar donde practicar. Era natural que al tener un piano en el salón comedor, Roberta y sus artistas invitados tocaran para los amigos y huéspedes del hotel. Desde sus comienzos, la presentación de música durante las festividades ha hecho del Restaurant Aaron ese lugar mágico donde disfrutarla. En el 1994 Wilhelm Sack se convirtió

en uno de los dueños del HDP y hoy día funge como su gerente. El ha supervisado muchos cambios en el hotel tales como la construcción de los condominios para alquiler y propiedad, y la adición de las piscinas privadas a las habitaciones originales y la creación de los salones de Yoga y del Spa, pero

Harold Davies, together with Kingsley and Roberta Wratten renovated the property on Carr. 429 in Bo. Barrero. Th ey believed that that they could make the HDP a destination for the sophisticated traveler who was looking for something elegant in a tropical, country setting. Roberta (Kingsley’s wife and the mother of chef Aaron Wratten for whom Restaurant Aaron is named), was a teacher and a musician. Kingsley was a teacher and artist, and Harold, a writer and professor of literature. (Th is gave rise to the gossip around town that “three teachers are building a hotel in Barrero!”) Th e music tradition began like this:Roberta, a concert pianist, installed a

piano in the upstairs dining room so she would have a place to practice. It seemed natural that with the piano in the dining room, Roberta and guest artists would perform for friends and hotel guests. From its fi rst days, music- (especially music during the holidays)- made Restaurant Aaron a magic place to be. In 1994 Wilhelm Sack became one of

the owners of the HDP and remains today as its onsite manager. He has overseen many changes at the hotel such as the building of the condo owner/rental units, the addition of private splash pools to

its original rooms and the creation of the yoga and spa rooms, but he has also been loyal to the original traditions of the hotel, particularly the tradition of music. In June of 2009 he began what he thought might just be a short

series of guest artist performances. Th e evening would begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the lobby watching the sunset. Th e guests would then adjourn to the dining room for the concert which would be followed by a four course dinner especially prepared for the evening and sometimes echoing the theme of the concert. What had been planned as an occasional concert has now become a concert series. “Th ere are two very important people I must mention, without whom there would be no concert series. Th ey are Emanuel Olivieri from the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, who is an active advisor, and Mrs. Kern, also of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra; both are responsible for the high quality of the concerts. Mrs. Kern also owns a villa at the Horned Dorset and is a frequent guest helping us along.” said Mr. Sack. “Th e concerts were immediately popular with the West Coast music lovers, but as the series has become well-known, the hotel rooms are booked for the weekend by music lovers from all around the island, and some overseas guest make sure to be here when there is a concert scheduled.” he concluded. Th e schedule for the concert series through October is the

Th is is an evergreen tree native of Africa and belongs to the Bignoniaceous family.

It is considered an ornamental tree that can reach 45 feet tall. Th e sausage tree can be found in Africa, India, United States of America and some countries in South America. Although this tree is from subtropical regions it can grow at low temperatures and thus can be found as far north as Alaska.

Th e tree’s fruits hang from structures that are ropelike and look like giant sausages that give the tree its common name. Th e sausage trees have to be planted out of areas when people sit or stand because the heavy, long- sausage-shaped fruit can weigh as much as fi fteen pounds and can be dangerous when they fall from the tree. Th e ripe fruits are eaten by giraff es, hippopotamus and certain kind of primates. Th e green fruit is poisonous. Neither ripe nor green fruit are considered suitable for human consumption. Th e red fl owers of this tree

open at night time only and are usually pollinated by bats. Th e fl owers do not have a pleasant smell to humans. *Th ere are traditional uses for the ripe

fruit from the sausage tree such as a topical treatment for skin problems and treatment for intestinal parasites. Th e steroid chemicals found in the tree are sometimes used in skin toning creams, creams for breast enlargement and in hair shampoos. Th e fruits are used for the treatment of syphilis and rheumatism. Th e roots are used for infertility problems.

Este es un árbol siempreverde nativo del Africa y perteneciente a la familia de las Bignoniaceae. Se considera un árbol ornamental que puede crecer hasta unos 45 pies de alto. Este árbol se encuentra en: Africa, India, Estados Unidos de América y algunos países de Sur América. Aunque es de regiones

subtropicales, crece a temperaturas bajas, por lo que se pueden encontrar tan al norte como Alaska.

Los frutos cuelgan de tallos parecidos a sogas y tienen la apariencia de salchichas gigantes, de ahí su nombre. Estos árboles hay que sembrarlos fuera de las áreas de tráfi co y descanso para las personas porque sus frutos, que son pesados, largos y en forma de salchicha

pueden pesar hasta 15 libras y pueden resultar peligrosos al caer. El fruto maduro es consumido por las jirafas, los hipopótamos y algunos primates). La fruta verde es venenosa. Ni verde ni madura se le considera apropiada para el consumo humano.

Las fl ores rojas de dicho árbol abren solamente de noche y son usualmente polinizadas por los murciélagos. La fragancia de

dichas fl ores no es agradable al olfato humano.

*Hay usos tradicionales para la fruta madura del árbol salchicha, tales como la aplicación tópica para tratar problemas de la piel y parásitos intestinales. Los químicos esteroides que se encuentran en el árbol se utilizan para elaborar cremas tonifi cadoras para la piel, cremas para agrandar el busto y champús. Los frutos también se utilizan para tratar la sífi lis y el reumatismo, y las raíces para tratar la infertilidad.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteria, a common type of bacteria that normally live on the skin and sometimes in the nasal passages of healthy people. It can cause infection when it enters the body through a cut or sore.

MRSA infections are grouped into two types: Healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) infections occur in people who are or have recently been in a hospital or other health-care facility, or Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infections occur in otherwise healthy people who have not recently been in the hospital such as people who use public facilities, share equipment or personal items - towels or razors, etc.. Th e number of CA-MRSA cases is increasing.

MRSA can be confused with bites, especially spider bites. Th e doctor will usually ask if you saw the spider because so frequently these bites turn out to be MRSA. When a skin infection spreads or doesn’t improve after two or three days on usual antibiotics, return to your doctor immediately.

Symptoms: Red, swollen, and painful area on the skin. Other symptoms may include: drainage of pus or other fl uids from the site, fever, skin abscess and warmth around the infected area. Symptoms of a more serious staph infection may range from fatigue, to chills, shortness of breath, and more. Call your health care provider if a wound seems to get worse rather than heal, or you have any other symptoms of staph infection. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend diff erent tests to detect and confi rm the bacteria causing the infection.

Prevention: Careful attention to personal hygiene is key to avoiding MRSA infections.Wash your hands frequently, especially

if visiting someone in a hospital or long-term care facility.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) es un tipo de la bacteria común Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), que normalmente vive en la piel y a veces en las fosas nasales de individuos saludables. Puede causar infecciones cuando entra en el cuerpo a través de una herida o lesión.

La infección MRSA se divide en dos grupos: La infección HA-MRSA-que es la que contraen personas que están o han estado ingresadas en una facilidad médica ya sea en un hospital u otra facilidad de cuidado médico. Y la infección CA-MRSA que contraen individuos saludables que no han estado hospitalizados recientemente pero que utilizan facilidades públicas, comparten equipo y efectos personales tales como toallas y navajas de afeitar. El número de casos de CA-MRSA ha ido en aumento.

La infección MRSA a veces se confunde con picadas de insectos, especialmente de araña. Frecuentemente, el médico le preguntará si ha visto a una araña, porque muchas veces esas “picadas” resultan ser MRSA. Cuando una infección en la piel se agranda y no se mejora después de dos o tres días de tratamiento con antibióticos regulares, regrese a ver a su médico inmediatamente.

Síntomas: Un área de la piel que se torna roja, infl amada y duele. Otros síntomas incluyen: supuración en el área afectada, fi ebre, formación de un absceso, y el área está caliente.

Los síntomas de una infección mas seria de Staphylococcus van desde fatiga, escalofríos, falta de respiración, y más. Llame a su médico en caso de que una herida empeore en vez de mejorar o si tiene algún otro síntoma de infección de Staphylococcus. Dependiendo de sus síntomas, su médico le recomendará diferentes exámenes para detectar y

Make sure all doctors, nurses, and other health care providers wash their hands before examining you.Do not share personal items such as towels or razors with another

person -- MRSA can be transmitted through contaminated items.Cover all wounds with a clean bandage, and avoid contact with

other people’s soiled bandages.If you share sporting equipment, clean it fi rst with antiseptic

solution.Avoid common whirlpools or saunas if another participant has

an open sore.Make sure that shared bathing facilities are clean.

As we witness the many disasters aff ecting people all over the world, the more conscious we are about being prepared for a natural catastrophe. Many communities are becoming proactive about disaster preparedness and the safest evacuation routes, but many people forget to include their animals in those plans. Emergencies come in many forms, and

they may require anything from a brief absence from your home to permanent evacuation. Each type of disaster requires diff erent measures to keep your pets safe. Guerrero’s hurricane hints are:* Take your animals with you! Pets that are

released or left behind often become victims of starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, accidents, or exposure to the elements.* Make sure animals have ID tags on

them.* Store an emergency kit and leashes as

close to an exit as possible. Th ree weeks of supplies is not excessive for humans or pets.* Proof of current vaccinations will be

required for housing animals in many facilities. Make sure you have copies stored in a waterproof container with other supplies so you don’t forget to take them.* Maintain current photos of your property

and animals.* Make sure you have a plan that is

eff ective during the times when you are separated from your pets. During the Hurricane Watch period (24-36 hour threat of hurricane conditions) keep tabs on local hurricane progress reports, double check your pet’s emergency supplies and load them, and make sure you have your evacuation vehicles fueled and in working order.* Anchor outside objects that cannot be

brought inside to avoid injury to animals, humans, or property.* Flood conditions or storm surges are

threats to animals. Provide a way for them to escape and climb to safety.* Use wire crates to transport and house

smaller animals since they provide better ventilation and fold up easily for storage and transport.* Provide shade along with water for

animals. If an animal does not eat initially, don’t worry too much--stressed animals often avoid food.* Return home only after authorities advise

that it is safe to return.* Use caution when returning home and

walking on higher ground since insects, snakes, and other animals may have found refuge there.* Hurricane winds can extend inland for

hundreds of miles and can trigger tornados, fl ooding, landslides, and storm surges. Keep alert and pay attention to warnings.For additional information, please contact
