LIFE STORIESThis is the story through time (40 years) of relationships based on desire and seduction strategies between men and women. This story is shown in a situation that crystallizes the essence of relationships and desire since it involves the body, dance, and thanks to the grace of theater and metonymy : this situation is an activity as well as it is a place : the ball. Actors express themselves without dialogues but with their bodies (acting and dancing) by establishing an intimate contact with the music that evokes the passage of time. The piece retraces a popular history of France from the Liberation up to the 85’s. The stage writing is based on “life stories” collected in a small town of Paris’ suburbs. Performers confront those stories with their own living memory, pictures and films and by doing so, they end up creating “characters”, some sort of archetypes that they make travel through time.It is presented more as a dance piece than as a play – by its specific style – and will strongly impact the 80’s.Besides, Ettore Scola shot a movie based on this project with the same theater company.

With the benevolence of Jean-François Guéganno. We thank Jean-Claude Penchenat, Yann Lorvo, Hélène Kelmachter, Lucie Haguenauer, Diana Theocharidis, Evelyne Loew, Natalia Uccello, Cecilia Kuska.

Behind this project, there is Le Bal, a piece created in January 1981 in CTM of Antony, France (in co-production with the theater Firmin Gémier in Antony) by director Jean-Claude Penchenat and the company théâtre du Campagnol. This wordless show quickly becomes very popular and will tour all over Europe for several years.

A CONTEMPORARY VERSIONWe want to create a new show based on Le Bal and to continue the process launched 30 years ago.The main basic concepts which founded Le Bal remain  : unity of place, absence of spoken text, having to tell stories only through movement and dance, travel through a country’s history, going from an era to another. We aim to create a “contemporary” version and explore, not how “telling history”, but rather try to go further in order to express what history does to the body or make it do.Dance, body, movement, space must remain central in the show. It is about capturing the energy or the lack of energy of each era: tired bodies, bodies that resist common body, exploded body over-energized body, body-built, athletic body, damaged body, child body, aged body, body made of prosthesis, broken body, transformed body, it’s all DANCE, and manifestation of collective imagination.

EL BAILE IN ARGENTINA This new project will be invented and premiered in Argentina, more specifically in Buenos Aires, in a country where dance has a special meaning and a prominent place and evolves in a strong political and social context.Tango is the soul of Argentina. Tango is timeless, popular, still alive, it is both a practice and an art. It still evolves, from traditional tango of the milongas to contemporary tango, tango of international competition or queer tango, electro tango, rap tango. However it would be wrong to reduce dance in Argentina to tango, because it is also made of samba, techno, rock, and all the dances that are practiced today and make its diversity. The show will be built on all these different steps and popular rhythms but also from a repertoire of songs and music that has marked each era.

We want the show to explore a period from 1978 to today because : the football world cup, the political events of the militaries at the power, but also because Kontakthof (Pina Bausch) was premiered in 78 (the fact that Penchenat had seen it at the time has a link with the genesis of Le Bal). Finally, because it is the time of our childhood, when we wanted to say everything and still could. The years 1975-76 because of the football World Cup, the political events of the militaries coming to

THE HISTORY OF A COUNTRYWe distrust the solemn weight of history (how to represent it, to condense it, to miniaturize it), and we shall try to find it in singular versions, embodied by the performers’ body in order to evacuate mistrust and draw from history all that it can still offer. The idea is not to give a “positive” or a “negative” insight of a national history that would unfold in front of our eyes. Argentinian history also seems to repeat itself; events seem to occur again and again, giving the feeling of a frozen history. There seems to be an eternal return to the “same”, at least in the contemporary decades.

power, but also because Kontakthof Pina Bausch was premiered in 78 (Penchenat had seen it at the time and it has a link with the genesis of Le Bal) finally, because it is the time of our childhood, when we still could say anything we wanted.

The general creation process of the original piece seems to be immanent, things had to “come” from inside the group, each member facing his own memories and the others’ ones. The collection of life stories seems to be very important and the “peripheral” aspect of these stories too. It is in many ways an exploration of popular issues, without demagoguery. So first, we will work with the performer’s personal stories as a starting point and then build up narratives from those listened and shared stories and explore Argentinian mythologies, what remains of the lost generations and danced revolutions. Collect the social experience of dance in places of Buenos Aires such as in the Malecón, in the Costanera where every Sunday hundreds of people gather to dance: salsa, mainly, but – during the “breaks” – tango, rock’n’roll, cheap techno, etc. We will focus on these fanatical dancers, for which dance plays a very special role, very personal, not at all “developed” with a professional or artistic look on it.

A chronological evolution underlaid the dramaturgy of the original show written in 4 parts. It seems right today to free ourself from this narrative form and keep in mind however that the show is a journey through time.In this new show we will also feel free to deal with the country’s history, not by confronting only official history but rather by staging what official history does not remember or show, what is forgotten. We will not offer clichés or pictures from an era built on splits and breaks, but rather explore the slow and imperceptible changes, changes that make the world turn radically from an era to another.
