EL AREEB SOARS HOME IN JEROME
M M G Stables= El Areeb (Exchange Rate) easily overtook
pacesetting favorite Takaful (Bernardini) turning for home
before gliding clear an 11 1/4-length winner of Monday=s
GIII Jerome S. at Aqueduct, the first stop on New York=s Triple
Crown trail. Recovering quickly from a slight bobble at the
break, >TDN Rising Star= El Areeb pressed the speed of the heavy
favorite through a strong pace of :23.28 and :48.11. He took
command midway on the far turn as the chalk began to sputter.
Widening strongly into the stretch over the muddy and sealed
inner track, it was only a question of how far from there, as El
Areeb cruised under the wire in splendid isolation, completing
the one mile and 70 yards in 1:46.17 in his first outing past six
furlongs. Takaful tired to last in the seven-horse field.
AWe=ve been training this horse since the [OBS] March sale and
he=s just been getting better and better,@ said winning trainer
Cathal Lynch. AHe=s worked a couple really good mile and an
eighths at Laurel [in] 1:55. The last couple of works have been
quite impressive. We have a lot of 2-year-olds, maybe 20, 22
each year, and he=s probably the best horse I=ve trained in 20
years. I think today he=s proved he=s a legit contender.@
El Areeb, a $340,000 OBS March graduate, is one of two newly
turned 3-year-old >TDN Rising Stars= campaigned by Mohammed
Al-Gadhi=s M M G Stables. The operation is also represented by
Swynford S. winner Undulated (Curlin), a $625,000 OBS March
purchase last spring. Cont. p3
RAIN ALLOWS >STORM= TO SHINE IN
SAN PASQUAL by Andrew Caulfield
Sunday=s GII San Pasqual S. could be described as Hamlet
without the Prince, after Arrogate, the forecast 1-5 favorite, was
withdrawn. The cause of the withdrawal was the days of rain
which had preceded the New Year, rather than the stage fright
which gave rise to the Hamlet without the Prince expression.
The story goes that a panic attack afflicted the inexperienced
actor playing the Prince of Denmark in a production of Hamlet at
the Richmond Theatre near London in 1787. Hamlet refused to
go on, but the production continued and Sir Walter Scott, who
was present, reported that the audience thought the play was
much improved!

El Areeb Soars Home in Jerome (cont. from p1)
El Areeb opened his career with a troubled fourth-place effort
as the 13-10 favorite June 11 at Parx, but exited that debut
performance with bucked shins and was sent to the sidelines. He
was fanned six wide while finishing second in an off-the-turfer at
Laurel in his 5 1/2-furlong return Sept. 30, but returned with a
resounding 8 3/4-length maiden win at that Maryland oval
Oct. 15. The gray colt was tabbed a >TDN Rising Star= after his
5 1/4-length victory in the Nov. 19 James F. Lewis III S. Both of
his previous wins were accomplished in wire-to-wire fashion,
but Lynch was confident his charge is tractable.
AWe=ve [sat him off horses] in the morning,@ Lynch explained.
AWe=ve worked three or four babies and he=s had no problem
sitting behind. He can rate. He=s shown a lot of speed the last
two times and everyone thought he had to be on the lead, but
he=s ratable. [A wet track] is still not his preference. He=s just a
good horse. Good horses run through their class.@
Of the stretch out to two turns, Lynch added, AWe've worked
him long and we expected him to go long sooner, we just didn't
get the opportunity. The races at Laurel come up three-quarters
and that=s our home track.@
Winning jockey Trevor McCarthy had nothing but confidence
in El Areeb.
AWe=ve been working him two-turns in the morning and he
turns off so well, he really seems to finish and like the two-turns,
so hopefully it goes forward like that,@ McCarthy said. AWe=ve
worked him on dead tracks and fast tracks, and it seems like he
gets over on anything. He can run on broken glass. Anything you
ask him to do, he=ll do for you. It=s super exciting for the whole
barn.@
Heavy favorite Takaful, tabbed a >TDN Rising Star= after a
dominant eight-length debut win at Belmont Oct. 29, was
looking to rebound from a third-place effort as the favorite in
the Nov. 26 GII Remsen S. But the Shadwell homebred packed it
in midway on the turn and trailed the field home.
AHe came back sound and wasn=t making any noise,@ jockey
Jose Ortiz said of Takaful. ALast time, he stumbled a little bit but
today he broke well. He relaxed for me in the first turn even
though [El Areeb] was close to me. Last time, he was a little
keen on me, but today I got him [relaxed]. We went to the
backside and he switched leads. I threw my hands and he
relaxed well, but we hit the three-eighths pole and he was
empty. He did everything right, just empty.@

Rain Allows Storm to Shine (cont. from p1)
The San Pasqual hardly benefited from
Arrogate=s no-show, but his absence at least
turned the spotlight onto a very deserving cause,
Midnight Storm. In these days of increasing
specialisation, it was great to see this versatile 6-year-old
continue to reinvent himself as a high-class performer on the
main track, following a distinguished career as one of America=s
top turf milers.
Returning Midnight Storm to dirt represented a very bold
move on behalf of his owners and his trainer Phil d=Amato, even
though his pedigree shouts dirt rather than turf.
His sire Pioneerof the Nile was runner-up in the GI Kentucky
Derby after winning two Grade Is and a pair of Grade IIs on
all-weather surfaces. More recently Pioneerof the Nile has
found fame as the sire of American Pharoah, arguably the
greatest dirt runner of recent decades. Midnight Storm=s dam,
My Tina, also gained the bulk of her earnings in her six starts on
dirt. Cont. p5

Midnight Storm | Benoit
Then there=s Midnight Storm=s grandsires, Empire Maker and
Bertrando. Despite being a son of the turf Grade I winner
Toussaud, Empire Maker raced exclusively on dirt. Bertrando did
win one of his two starts on turf, but it was as a first-rate dirt
performer that he collected more than $3 million.
It is a similar story when it comes to Midnight Storm=s four
great-grandsires. Unbridled made 23 of his 24 starts on dirt,
with the Kentucky Derby and GI Breeders= Cup Classic among his
wins. Pioneerof the Nile=s broodmare
sire Lord At War gained all seven of his
North American wins on dirt, including
the GI Santa Anita H. and the San
Antonio S. in the days when it carried
Grade I status. Next comes Bertrando=s
sire Skywalker. Winless in three starts
on turf, he numbered the Santa Anita
Derby and Breeders= Cup Classic among
his eight victories on dirt. The one
exception to the rule was My Tina=s
broodmare sire Darby Creek Road, as
he won the Hill Prince H. and Sword Dancer S. on turf. Even so,
he gained twice as many wins on dirt, notably taking the
Saratoga Special, and he was also placed in the Champagne S.
and the Wood Memorial.
Consequently, it was hardly surprising that Midnight Storm=s
original trainer Jorge Gutierrez expected that dirt racing would
prove to be the youngster=s vocation. The 3-year-old Midnight
Storm duly won at the fourth attempt, when he scored over
seven furlongs over Santa Anita=s main track. But after a
disappointing fifth effort, Midnight Storm underwent a change
of trainers and surface, the instant reward being victories in an
optional claimer and the GII Del Mar Derby.
Since then, of course, Midnight Storm has
boosted his total of turf wins to seven,
including the GII Seabiscuit H., GI
Shoemaker Mile, GII Eddie Read S. and GII
Del Mar Mile H. So what prompted the
recent return to dirt--especially when he
trailed home last of 10 when he briefly
reverted to dirt in the 2015
GI Pacific Classic? D=Amato suggested that
the motivation was to boost Midnight
Storm=s stallion prospects by adding a
graded win on dirt to his resume and also
to widen his range of opportunities in 2017. The strategy could
hardly have worked out better. Midnight Storm=s speed helped
him wire the field for an easy win in the GIII Native Diver S. just
weeks after his third in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile. Cont. p6

MIDNIGHT STORM, h, 2011
Midnight Storm repeated the performance in the San Pasqual, sending his earnings heading towards the $1.5-million mark. That=s pretty good going for a horse who failed to sell at$38,000 as a yearling in September 2012. Of course Pioneerofthe Nile was totally unproven as a stallion at that stage, asMidnight Storm belongs to his first crop, which numbered 90named foals. That eye-catching first crop has since beenrepresented by 10 black-type winners, with Midnight Stormranking alongside Cairo Prince, Jojo Warrior, Cash Control andVinceremos as one of its five graded winners. I think I have warned in the past that it wouldn=t be fair toexpect Pioneerof the Nile=s next two crops to maintain thisprolific start, as the second crop numbered only 63 foals and histhird 59. Another factor which mustn=t be forgotten is thatPioneerof the Nile=s first four crops of racing age--plus his 20172-year-olds--were all sired at fees ranging between $15,000 and$20,000. In the circumstances, he has done very well to sire Grade Iwinners in three of his first four crops, the others being thephenomenal American Pharoah and the champion 2-year-old-elect Classic Empire. Add in the GIII Delaware Oaks winner DarkNile and the Japanese colt Levante Lion and he has nine gradedwinners from 303 named foals, with his 91-strong fourth crop nodoubt poised to add to that encouraging total in 2017. It is going to be fascinating to see what his more expensivecrops achieve. He has more than a hundred 2016 foals sired at afee of $60,000 and he covered 120 mares at $125,000 last year. His fee has been reduced to $110,000 for 2017. He is now incompetition not only with his repatriated sire Empire Maker, whose fee is down to $85,000 from $100,000 in 2016 (when hecovered 130 mares), but also with his sons American Pharoahand Cairo Prince. These sons, respectively, covered 208 and 148mares in 2016, and this branch of the Unbridled male line clearlyhas every chance of flourishing further in the coming years, withMidnight Storm now well qualified to join them. Midnight Storm=s female line also has every chance of addingto its laurels.
Although My Tina RNA=d at $525,000 at Keeneland twomonths ago, she is carrying a close relative to Midnight Storm byEmpire Maker=s son Bodemeister. She also has a 2-year-oldbrother to Midnight Storm which sold to Coolmore=s M.V.Magnier and Stonestreet for $925,000 last September.
FAIR GROUNDS PUT UNDER QUARANTINE Fair Grounds Race Course, which already had two barns inquarantine, was put under complete quarantine Mondaymorning after two horses spiked temperatures. The track=s Barn14 had been under a two-week quarantine after a pair of horsestested positive for EHV-1 last week. A third horse tested positivefor a different strain of the virus Sunday, leading to thequarantine of Barn 36. Monday=s development led Fair Groundsofficials to immediately stop the shipment of horses into or outof the track=s backstretch. By Monday evening, track officialshad confirmed one of the horses with an elevated temperature, stabled with Tom Amoss in Barn 14, had returned a negativeresult, while the second, trained by Chris Davis and stabled inthe receiving barn, returned a positive for the >wild strain= alsofound in Barn 36. As a result, the quarantine timeline on Barn 14remains unchanged, with a current end date of Jan. 13, at thediscretion of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. Thereceiving barn is now under quarantine until Jan. 16.

MARY JO PONS PASSES AWAY Mary Jo Pons, matriarch of Maryland=s Country Life Farm,

career hosting radio broadcasts of fashion shows and, during the
1960s, she owned Petticoat Lane, a women=s dress shop.
Combining a love of

the Radio Reading Network of Maryland. Her tireless efforts
found a perfect home for the organization at the Maryland
School for the Blind on Taylor Avenue near Parkville, and
resulted in endowments from generous supporters and
volunteers.
Mary Jo was introduced to her future husband at a cocktail
party in Harford County. She correctly answered a question
relating to the New York Giants' quarterback Y. A. Tittle, nemesis
of the Baltimore Colts.
ABet you don't know what his initials stand for?@ Joe Pons
challenged her. ABet I do,@ she answered. AYelberton Abraham.@
They were married on Aug. 26, 1950.
At her home on the farm, Mary Jo cared for her ailing in-laws,
raised five children, and became famous for her gracious
Preakness Parties, held on the Thursday before the big race at
Pimlico each year.
Pons=s Preakness Party tradition began in 1961, when a horse
named Carry Back, sired by Country Life stallion Saggy, won the
Kentucky Derby, and arrived in Baltimore to prepare for the
Preakness S. On the trail of a potential Triple Crown winner,
sportswriters flocked to Pimlico. Mary Jo invited them to
Country Life. Among them were Pulitzer Prize-winning writer
Red Smith, New York Times racing columnist Joe Nichols, CBS
radio announcers Win Elliot and Jack Whitaker, as well as
prominent Baltimore racing writers Joe Kelly, Dale Austin, and
Bill Boniface. AThey looked hungry,@ she explained, Aand so I
invited them to Country Life for a home-cooked meal.@
Predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Pons is survived by
five children: Norah, Andrew, Josh, Michael, and Alice Pons; and
six grandchildren: Karianna Brace, Philip, Elizabeth, Josh, David,
and August Pons.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to
the Radio Reading Network of Maryland, a 501(c)(3) charitable
organization, located at 3501 Taylor Avenue, Baltimore,
Maryland, 21236.
A memorial celebration in Mary Jo=s honor will be held at

GUSTNADO (g, 5, Smart Strike--Blithe, by Unbridled) captured
a Churchill turf allowance June 16 in his final outing for trainer
Bill Mott and owner Matt Schera and was subsequently
purchased for $135,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton July Horses of
Racing Age sale. Gelded since his last start and making his first
appearance in the Ruis Racing colors, the dark bay was jostled at
the break before settling in midpack while racing along the rail.
He was well in hand as Curlin Rules (Curlin) took the field
through fractions of :22.91 and :46.72. Niggled at leaving the
backstretch, the 19-1 shot snuck through a narrow opening at
the top of the lane and outbattled the game Curlin Rules in a
ding-dong battle to the wire. The unraced Blithe, who was
purchased with the future winner in utero for $80,000 at the
2011 Keeneland November sale, is a half-sister to GI Kentucky

BLUE POINT TO RETURN IN SANDY LANE
Royal Ascot hopeful and >TDN Rising Star= Blue Point (Ire)(Shamardal) will be readied to make his seasonal reappearancein the G2 Sandy Lane S. at Haydock in May upon his return froma winter break in Dubai. The 2-year-old is in line for thesix-furlong contest ahead of an outing in the G1 CommonwealthCup at the Royal meeting, for which he is as short as 6-1.Although tasting defeat in both the G1 Middle Park and G1Dewhurst S., the son of Shamardal had earlier showcased histalents with victory in the G2 Gimcrack S. at York. Trainer Charlie Appleby said, "Blue Point is only wintering andnot racing in Dubai. We just decided to do that to give him aneasier time. He will have a nice holiday and get a bit of sun onhis back, then we will bring him back in the spring and looktowards the Sandy Lane. We are really working back from theCommonwealth Cup." While potential plans have been drawn up for Blue Point, theNewmarket handler has yet to discuss targets for G1 Eclipse S.hero Hawkbill (Kitten=s Joy), who is also wintering in Dubai. Appleby added, "As it was quite clear to see, Hawkbill isground dependent. He definitely wants cut in the ground. Thesofter the better. His last start in Germany was a good effort andhe was just pipped for second. He will go where the ground isright for him. He is going to be a horse on his travels aroundEurope next year. He has done well and strengthened up welland I'm looking forward to having him as a 4-year-old."
LESSONS LEARNED THIS WEEKENDby John Berry
A Star Exhibition of Patience Rewarded... The G2 Perth Cup has come down a long way in the worldsince its glory days when it ranked alongside the Cups ofMelbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide as one of Australia'smajor two-milers. It lost its Group 1 status in 1993, and thereduction in its distance in 2009 from 3200m to 2400m was acry of desperation which has not so far yielded the desiredresults. Despite the race's current value of A$500,000, the dayswhen it attracted high-class stayers from the east have(inexplicably, some might say) gone: this year's edition failed toattract a single interstate raider. Even so, it is still a valuable andprestigious big race. As such, it provided a good reminder of therewards which can stem from breeding from tough mares andshowing patience. Cont. p3

SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO: STAYING
SIRES by John Boyce
The recent talk in Britain about the perceived lurch towards
speed at the expense of stamina is certainly an interesting one.
Our table lists proven sires available to breeders in
Britain and Ireland in 2017 whose stamina index is 9.5 furlongs
and higher and who have achieved a ratio of black-type winners
of 4.5% or higher. Yes, there are only seven to choose from.
More startling is the fact that there are another 13 who meet
the same criteria who started out in Britain and Ireland and who
through lack of demand moved abroad. France claimed
Dalakhani (who is now retired), Motivator, Manduro, Authorized
and Rail Link. The recently deceased Hurricane Run went to
Germany, Duke of Marmalade to South Africa, while Beat
Hollow, Champs Elysees, Doyen, Dylan Thomas, Mount Nelson
and Shirocco are all at National Hunt studs for 2017.
ACAPULCO TO BE TRAINED BY O=BRIEN Acapulco (Scat Daddy), who scored her biggest win in the G2
Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot in 2015, will be transferred to
Ballydoyle maestro Aidan O=Brien from the Wesley Ward barn,
Racing Post reported Monday. Her long-term goal is the G1
King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot in June. The hulking chestnut
behemoth ran second in the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. at York
for the Coolmore partners in August of 2015. Also a winner of
the Unbridled=s Sidney S. last May, the American-bred was last
seen running sixth from an abbreviated three-start campaign in
the GIII Senator Ken Maddy S. at Santa Anita Nov. 5 and will be
bred to Galileo (Ire) this spring.
AShe=s a very fast filly who would look made for the King=s
Stand S. at Royal Ascot,@ O=Brien commented to Racing Post.
AWesley [Ward] spoke to Paul [Shanahan, of Coolmore Stud] and
told him it may be worth doing some work with her ahead of her
date with Galileo, as he felt he didn=t get a proper run with her
ahead of her final start for him when she was beaten at Santa
Anita. We haven=t done anything with her yet, but Wesley felt
that she had more to give and she could run up to Royal Ascot,
providing everything goes to plan.@

Lessons Learned This Weekend Cont. from p1
Bred and owned by successful West Australian
bloodstock identities Bob and Sandra Peters,
Perth Cup winner Star Exhibit (Aus) (Statue Of
Liberty) is the first foal of their former hardy
racemare Star Encounter (Aus), a daughter of
1994 G1 Melbourne Cup hero Jeune (GB) (Kalaglow {Ire}). Some
old-time horsemen used to believe that having had a busy racing
career lessened the chances of a mare being successful in her
second career. That Star Encounter has produced a Perth Cup
winner with her first, foal flies in the face of this generally
discredited line of reason. She was a proper trouper for Mr. and
Mrs. Peters in her racing days. She won eight of her 30 starts
including the 2009 Pinjarra Cup and recorded seven minor
placings including finishing second in the G3 West Australian
Oaks and third in the G1 WATC Derby, the G3 Strickland S. and
the Bunbury Cup.
Mr. and Mrs. Peters were entitled to hope that Star Encounter
would breed nice horses if she could pass on her class, honesty
and durability. She has done that at the first attempt, but they
have had to show patience to reap the dividends. Star Exhibit
has won now won eight of his 17 starts, but he was a
late-developer. He did not run as a 2-year-old, while his second
season only saw him racing three times, including winning a
1300m maiden race at Northam on debut. He was kept busier at
four when he won four of his seven starts, but only this season
has he progressed to stakes company at the age of five.

Start Wondering | Trish Dunell
Lessons Learned This Weekend Cont.
Having landed a handicap over 1600m at Ascot at the end of
November, he has now run in three black-type contests,
registering a second placing in the JRA Trophy over 2200m at
Ascot before taking firstly the ATA S. over the same course and
distance and, now, the Perth Cup. He is clearly still improving,
and it will be interesting to see how far up the rankings he can
eventually progress.
Star Exhibit has thus become the 19th stakes winner for his
sire Statue Of Liberty (Storm Cat), who won the G2 Coventry S.
at Royal Ascot as a 2-year-old in 2002 before being beaten only
a head in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood the following season.
Statue Of Liberty has enjoyed a peripatetic stud career which
has seen him standing most recently at Sun Stud in Victoria,
where his fee during the past season was A$8,800. He has sired
decent horses wherever he has been, most notably the top-class
sprinter Hay List (Aus) and the tough Group 2-winning speedster
Mic Mac (Aus). Star Encounter currently has a Statue Of Liberty
foal at foot, i.e. a full-brother to Star Exhibit, and has an unraced
2-year-old filly by Redoute's Choice named Perfect Jewel (Aus).
Another Ace for Harvey... The forthcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
represents a big and busy week for Magic Millions proprietor
Gerry Harvey. His ownership of the burgeoning sales company
represents merely one of his many large investments in various
aspects of the racing and breeding game, and he can currently
be very happy with the way things are going. The signs are that
this year's Gold Coast Sale and Carnival will be an excellent one
in many respects, while the stallions at his Westbury Stud in
New Zealand are currently going well.
This column recently highlighted the promising start which
Westbury resident Redwood (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}) has
made to his stud career. Makfi (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is also
enjoying a good run of success, most recently coming up with
last week's QAT-G1 Qatar Derby winner Noor Al Hawa (Fr).
Makfi had previously enjoyed Classic success with the 2015 G1
Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Make Believe (GB) and the
Harvey-bred 2016 G1 Australian Oaks victrix Sofia Rosa (NZ).
Another young Westbury stallion doing well at present is Swiss
Ace (Aus) (Secret Savings) who hit the target at Ellerslie on New
Year's Day with G2 Great Northern Guineas winner Swissta (NZ).
Bred by Gerry Harvey, Swissta was sold in the Westbury Stud
draft at the 2015 NZB Festival Yearling Sale at Karaka, where he
was bought for NZ$24,000 by his trainer Richard Collett. He has
so far only raced five times, but he has won his last three starts
and clearly represents a great bargain. He is the third recent
stakes winner in New Zealand for Swiss Ace, following the
successes of G3 Canterbury Breeders' S. heroine First Serve (NZ)
and the Harvey-bred Trevor Eagle Memorial S. winner Top
Prospect (NZ). Furthermore, Bella Gioia (NZ) finished second in
November in the G1 NZ 1000 Guineas.
Gerry Harvey has shown plenty of faith in the merit of Swiss
Ace, who recorded his finest hour on the racecourse when
taking the G1 Oakleigh Plate over 1100m in 2009. He can be
happy that his confidence has been justified, not least because
he potentially has a very appealing prospect to look forward to:
his wide-margin 2013 G1 Australian Oaks heroine Royal Descent
(Aus) (Redoute's Choice {Aus}) is currently in foal to the stallion.
Another Carat Shining Brightly... While Cambridge Stud in New Zealand will always be
synonymous with its first great stallion Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor),
Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces Of Eight) will forever rank as the
greatest broodmare to have called the property home. A
descendant of HH Aga Khan III's legendary matron >The Flying
Filly' Mumtaz Mahal (GB) (The Tetrarch {Ire}), Eight Carat came
from a branch of the family replete with high-class sprinters but
became notable as an influence for class at pretty much any
distance. She bred five individual Group 1 winners, while the
numerous high-class colts and stallions have descended from
her include her sons Octagonal (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), Kaapstaad
(NZ) (Sir Tristram) and Mouawad (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), as well as
the Danehill full-brothers Commands (Aus) and Danewin (Aus),
plus Viking Ruler (Aus) (Danehill) and Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel
{NZ}).
Now another descendant of Eight Carat has gained the
distinction of siring a Group 1 winner. Eighth Wonder (NZ)
(Zabeel {NZ}) was very
popular at the yearling
sales in 2007 selling for
half a million dollars,
which was
understandable as he was
a son of Eight Carat's
Group 1-winning daughter
Diamond Lover (Aus)
(Sticks And Stones {Aus}).
However, having joined Lee Freedman's stable in Melbourne, he
only raced once: last in a provincial 2-year-olds' maiden race at
Sale in April 2008. He subsequently suffered a career-ending
injury when bowing a tendon. It was obviously hard for him,
even with his stellar pedigree, to get a chance at stud, but New
Zealand studmaster Steve Bliss gave him a chance at Sentry Hill
Farm near Whanganui at a fee of NZ$2,000. His small first crop
was born in 2010, and its star Start Wondering (NZ) is now a
Group 1 winner, courtesy of having landed the G1 Railway H.
over 1200m at Ellerslie on New Year's Day. Cont. p5

Lessons Learned This Weekend Cont.
This was Start Wondering's ninth victory and second strike in
black-type company, following his victory in the Westminster H.
over 1200m at Te Rapa in November. He was formerly trained in
Australia by Chris Waller, but did not race until he had returned
to his homeland and joined the Whanganui stable of Evan and JJ
Rayner. Sadly, this is a posthumous triumph for Eighth Wonder,
so Sentry Hill Farm will not be able to benefit from this
vindication of Steve Bliss' judgement.
Limestone=s Prospects Look Rock-Solid... All eyes at Flemington on New Year's Day were
understandably on the debut of the 2-year-old filly Oscietra
(Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) as this was the first start for the
first foal of the former unbeaten international champion
sprinter Black Caviar (Aus)
(Bel Esprit {Aus}). She
dominated both the
lead-up to and the betting
for the New Year Day
Plate but, although she
showed brilliant speed
during the first four
furlongs of this 1000m
sprint up the straight, the
prize actually went to another very talented filly. The winner
was the Darren Weir-trained Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus})
who has previously shown promise when finishing third at
Moonee Valley last month.
Even post-race discussions centred mostly around Oscietra
(who now heads off for a spell), but it would be wrong not to
focus on the winner, who seems to be a filly with an exciting
future. Limestone looks to be the latest in a long line of
high-class horses to carry the colours of long-standing
owner/breeder David Moodie, former proprietor under his
Contract Racing banner of the now-defunct Hobson's Lodge
Stable at Flemington. Moodie has raced many extremely good
horses since the 1980s including 2010 G1 Golden Slipper
heroine Crystal Lily (Aus) (Stratum {Aus}) and 1996 G1 Caufield
Cup victrix Arctic Scent (Aus) who, incidentally, recorded her
great win at the expense of the subsequent great broodmare
Circles Of Gold (Aus) (Marscay {Aus}). Arctic Scent, who had
landed the G1 Queensland Oaks the previous season, was a
daughter of one of the several good stallions whom Moodie has
stood, Blazing Sword (Aus) (Marscay {Aus}).
Whether Limestone ever achieves similar heights remains to
be seen, but it is not impossible. She is a good advertisement for
her young sire Helmet (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), winner of
the G1 Caulfield Guineas in 2011 having taken the final two legs
of Sydney's 2-Year-Olds' Triple Crown earlier in the year. Her
dam Limerock (Aus) (Charge Forward {Aus}) was a smart filly,
who was trained for Moodie by Peter Moody to win five sprints
in the 2010/'11 season, when her victories included triumphs at
Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown. Limerock is now shaping up
as a good broodmare for her Moodie, having already bred the
smart Weir-trained 3-year-old Gimlet (Aus) (Dream Ahead), a
winner over 1000m at Warrnambool last season.
WINX NEARING RETURN Australian wonder mare Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), who has
won 13 consecutive races and signed off her spring campaign
with a second victory in Mooney Valley=s G1 Cox Plate Oct., is
nearing a return to the races, reported racenet.com.au Monday.
Trainer Chris Waller confirmed the news, stating, AShe=s dead
set three weeks away from a trial. She=ll have a couple of trials.@
Winx, who races for an ownership group, will resume in the
1400-metre G2 Apollo S. at Randwick Feb. 11, before stepping
back up to Group 1 level
in the G1 Chipping Norton
S. at Warwick Farm Feb.
25.
AAutumn comes around
pretty quick this year, so
she=ll be racing mid-
February,@ Waller
continued. AThe Apollo,

George Ryder [S. at
Rosehill Mar. 17] and [G1] Queen Elizabeth [S. at Randwick Apr.
7]. That=s the campaign at this stage. There are other options,
but that=s my preferred route.@
OSCIETRA TO SPELL Co-trainer David Hayes said Oscietra (Aus) (Exceed And Excel
{Aus}), the first foal out of Australian superstar Black Caviar
(Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) would now be spelled, reported Racing
And Sports. A promising third in the 1000-meter New Year Plate
on debut at Flemington behind Limestone (Aus) (Helmet {Aus}),
Oscietra had won her first two trials to date and will skip the
major upcoming 2-year-old races.

AUSTRALIAN-BRED WINNERS
Oscietra to Spell Cont. AThe expectation of the girl is so great,@ Hayes told Racing AndSports. AI think she will win plenty of races and will get better.Because she=s been going so well in her trials and hasn=t been
put under much pressurebefore, when she got outunder pressure sheresponded, but thewinner had far too manyguns. She=s got electricearly speed, she=s going tobe better around thebend, but her mother andher father were so gooddown the straight we
thought we=d give it a go.@ Black Caviar has since produced a 2015 colt by Sebring (Aus)and a 2016 filly by Snitzel (Aus). She was covered by More ThanReady this past fall and has been confirmed in foal to theprominent shuttle stallion.
