Akkamma is from Kalyandurg and is an apparel artisan at Ektha Apparel, a producer owned tailoring company incubated by Industree Foundation. Her husband’s earnings are not sufficient to support their family, and they often struggle financially. She faced a lot of difficulties in sending her children to school, and would sometimes keep them at home because she was unable to pay the school fees. Her husband was not supportive of using their money to send the children to school, and was a major factor in the decision to keep them at home.
Akkamma heard that a producer company, Ektha Apparel, was starting near her home, and decided to investigate the opportunity. She took part in skills training the unit offered, and learned how to stitch kurtas, shorts, and shirts. She felt that the training was very helpful, and provided an opportunity that will help her future.
Now, Akkamma earns a regular salary with Ektha Apparel, and is able to provide for her family. “Now, I have the confidence to send my children to school regularly, and I can do it on my own salary!” she says. She encourages other women to take advantage of the opportunity that Ektha Apparel has provided her.
Gayatri is a 27 year old apparel artisan from Kalyandurg. She has had 10 years of experience in the field, but was not receiving a salary sufficient to support herself and her family from her previous job. She joined Ektha Apparel, a producer-owned tailoring company incubated by Industree Foundation, in the hopes of gaining more income. She participated in the skills training offered and has now started to produce apparel for the company.
Gayatri now receives an increased and regular income from her work at Ektha Apparel, which helps her to support herself and her family. She is very thankful for the opportunity that she has to work in the producer owned company, as she feels that there are not other companies like Ektha that provide opportunities to women in this capacity.
Gayatri believes that other women should take advantage of the opportunity that Ektha Apparel has provided her and her fellow artisans. She says, “Women are afraid to come out because people in the community might say something. However, after the formation of the company, people are showing interest and have started working in this company. I am very thankful to those who have created this opportunity for us.”

Kavalamma is an apparel artisan from Kalyandurg, and she works for Ektha Apparel, a producer-owned tailoring company incubated by Industree Foundation. Before working with Ektha, Kavalamma was a housewife, and her family struggled financially. She did not have the funds to send her children to school consistently, resulting in their patchy and incomplete education.
Kavalamma joined Ektha Apparel and received training and encouragement, which have enabled her to face her life courageously. She now knows how to stick Kurt’s and shirts, and produces them for the company. With the income that she receives from Ektha, she is able to look after her family, her parents, and to educate her children.
Kavalamma is passionate about her work, and wants other women to have the same opportunities that she has. She says, “I want to become an inspiration for other women to come and join our company. Lots of people are asking me how this company is working and what they are doing. I am telling them that lots of people need to come in.” She is very optimistic about her future, saying “I want to stand on my own feet without anybody’s help and I will succeed in this.”
Manjula is an apparel artisan from Kalyandurg who now works for Ektha Apparel, a producer-owned tailoring company incubated by Industree Foundation. Prior to working for Ektha, Manjula was a housewife who was completely dependent upon her husband. She had to ask him for everything, even if it was just one rupee, and she was fed up. No matter how much her husband earned, by the end of the day not even a single rupee was left in his hand. Manjula wanted to earn and provide for her children, and she started seeking out work.
In addition to wanting to support her family, Manjula also wanted a life outside her home. She says,“I want to understand what is happening in the world and so I came out and joined this company.” Manjula had been looking for a company like Ektha Apparel in Kalyandurg for three years, and when the company started, she eagerly joined and participated in skills training. She feels as if this company was formed specifically for her and her needs, as the hours and work location are perfect for her to be able to work and also take care of her family. She wants to work at Ektha Apparel for a minimum of 10 more years because she loves the company and sees the positive effects it has had on herself and her ability to support her family.
