The EIT Health Accelerator

The EIT Health Accelerator creates an ecosystem where innovation can thrive. It gathers the best and brightest health entrepreneurs and provides them with the support, skills and services they need to get their ideas off the ground and into the market. In the INCUBATE! activity line entrepreneurial training and support activities, we help entrepreneurs create a business plan out of an initial business idea. These programmes vary in length from two to twelve months and offer entrepreneurs an international perspective and the opportunity to build their network with leading health organisations. The VALIDATE! activity line helps start-ups and entrepreneurs to continuously improve their ventures with access to suitable Living Labs and Test Beds, mentoring and coaching expertise within the community, and to gain an understanding of local/regional regulatory and reimbursement schemes. The SCALE! activity line focuses on developing tools and networks that can provide financing for projects and smaller SMEs, as well as facilitating access to potential investors including angel networks, corporate financers and crowd funders. Furthermore, internationalisation programmes support European start-ups and scale-ups in the domain of Medtech, Biotech and Digital Health so that they can expand within Europe, the United States, Korea, China, Japan, and Canada. This business creation supply chain supports the acceleration of innovation projects and access to relevant facilities for start-ups and SMEs throughout the consortium. The Accelerator is open to applications from all entrepreneurs, start-ups, scaleups, and SMEs in Europe. If you have no previous connection to any EIT Health partners or CLC representatives, introduce yourself – a list of partners can be found at eithealth.eu/partners, or you can contact the Business Creation Managers at regional CLCs at eithealth.eu/clc. Some applications may encourage reference letters from EIT Health partners or regional CLCs as supplements to support the application. How to join activities in the INCUBATE! Activity Line

In the INCUBATE! Activity Line, innovation training and support activities like Validation Lab and other Bootcamp programmes help entrepreneurs to create a business plan out of an initial business idea within a two-month programme. Furthermore, local training activities are organised to augment existing programmes at CLCs, with a focus on key skills in the healthcare sector.

1.4 EIT Health Bootcamps In 2019, five Bootcamps and one Bootcamp Plus programme will provide intensive incubation programmes over a period of 2-3 months (some might be up to 6 months). The programmes are suitable for European teams that have the ambition to become entrepreneurs and explore the opportunities of their health business idea. The programmes help them to design and validate their business model and discover its market potential, competition, USPs and target customers. The Bootcamp programmes target teams of MSc, MDs and PhD students and/or Postdocs, and professionals who have a business idea for a product still in the research and development stage. The programme only enlists teams (2 to 4 members, depending on the bootcamp). The commercial value of these programmes is an estimated €15,000 and no equity is asked for in return. What we ask from teams: ● Teams of 2 to 4 people depending on the bootcamp; ● Ambition, drive and commitment to fulfil a dream and build a leading company around an

innovative idea with a potentially scalable business model; ● Attendance at all sessions and workshops for the duration of the Bootcamp; ● Willingness to interview at least 100 stakeholders about a business idea; ● The ideal team profile features a combination of skills, such as business-lead and product-

development-lead; ● Selection of teams is based on the quality of the business idea, their fit for the programme

and the team’s motivation and level of commitment. Important dates: Applications will be accepted in two waves:

➢ Wave 1: 11th January to 13th March

➢ Wave 2: 8th April to 17th June Selection procedure: ● Applications will open via the EIT Health application platform, hosted by Optimy. ● To apply, you will need to create an EIT Health Optimy account: eithealth.optimytool.com. ● After review, you may receive an invitation to pitch your business idea via Skype.

13

● A selection committee will choose the most promising start-ups to participate in the programmes. The committee will include diverse experts from each Bootcamp.

● Applicants may only attend one Bootcamp, but can apply to more than one. ● Applicants must commit to the programme attendance expectations.

What we offer: If chosen for an EIT Health Bootcamp, applicants will receive training with a commercial value equivalent to approximately €15,000. Additionally, each programme includes financial grants to support in travel and other associated costs incurred during the programme. The programme will also support funding for a field trip – an opportunity to pitch your idea across Europe. The funding is allocated by the specific Bootcamp. However, the funding is not intended to be all-inclusive. Generally, a Bootcamp accepts 10 to 15 teams (2-3 team members) within one programme.

Sebastián for Medtech; 8-10 October London for Digital Health ● International centralised training and selection days ● Finals: 2-3 December, 2019 at the EIT Health Summit in Paris

The European Health Catapult follows a three-stage procedure Stage 1: Interested companies apply to participate at the regional level. The seven regional competitions will be organised based on the EIT Health regional structure. Start-up companies may only apply to one region. Companies are advised to apply to the regional office they are most likely to associate with. For instance, companies should self-identify with this region, have their company registered in this region, or have a second office in this region. Please be aware that attendance for local events in person may be required. The pre-selection of the nominated start-ups will be made by each region, based on a common set of criteria. Regions are free to define their individual selection process but are encouraged to run pitch sessions, workshops or other assessments to ensure that the quality of start-ups representing them are outstanding in an international context. The best regional start-ups in each category (Medtech, Biotech and Digital Health) will be identified by June 2019. The selected companies (42 in total, 14 per category) will be presented by their regional representatives during an informal consensus meeting. Stage 2: Centralised training and selection days (semi-finals) will be held for each of the three categories Biotech, Medtech and Digital Health. Those events will occur before 15 October, 2019. Each one of those days will have the following format:

● During a two-day semi-final, participating start-ups will be matched with mentors (experienced entrepreneurs, investors, experts in the field) to strengthen and optimise their business plan, and gain intensive pitch training to prepare their ability to perform for top-level investors.

Stage 3: At the EIT Health Summit, winners will be selected, and prizes awarded by a panel of experts, industry stakeholders and investors (business angels, corporate VCs and crowd funders). 1.14 Investor Network ➢ Applications will be accepted on a regular basis, with four calls during the year

The Pitch This Investor Network addresses the issue of early-to-late-development stage fundraising across Europe to conquer health markets faster and better. This network connects health-oriented investors and promising start-ups through cross-border financing and co-investments, making it the first pan-European, EU-driven network solely focused on financing health innovation. Important Project Dates There are four calls during the year to attract start-ups: Early January, early March, end of July and early October. Is it for me? Start-ups must be registered and at minimum seed stage with public grants and have money already raised to a significant level. The Programme

The programme connects start-ups to investors to allow them to access funds for Seed to Series C rounds, by it is a unique networking programme that displays the start-up’s funding needs to a variety of investors, including private equity investors. It is also the first programme of its kind in Europe to offer a continuum of investment. It has the ambition to leverage investment by creating a close-knit network of healthcare investors that know and trust each other, and who share the same ambition of bringing smart money to innovative European start-ups. The Investor Network journey for start-ups starts with an application through the EIT Health Optimy platform. Upon approval by the BCM, start-ups are invited to sign a Memorandum of Understanding which will give them access to a deal flow management platform where they will upload their documents for review by our selected investors. Investors will contact them if interested to ask for their information and potentially begin a due diligence check. They will be invited to pitch via WebEx or in person, then proceed with individual negotiations. The Investor Network collaborates closely with other investment programmes within EIT Health such as the Crowdfunding Platform. 1.15 GoGlobal ➢ Applications are open between 11 January and 27 March

Europe is home to many life science companies, the majority of which employ fewer than 50 people. New companies can find it difficult to grow, especially when introducing new treatments or complex technologies to established markets. GoGlobal aims to provide your company with the competence needed for growth and international expansion, remain competitive worldwide, and to build up business contacts in new regions. To succeed internationally, your company needs a comprehensive understanding of various markets and their specific requirements as they relate to healthcare systems, regulatory and reimbursement systems, and how your product influences the business case in the foreign life science market. The GoGlobal programme helps you understand the local ecosystem (trends, best practices, key stakeholders, competitors), the specificities of the markets, and how to

succeed in making your business international. GoGlobal also offers strong networking opportunities and access to local support stakeholders for faster success and long-term follow-up. Our Offer: Soft-landing with market-entry support and experience targeting the following countries: China: particularly receptive to new science and technology in both Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Developing into the second-largest healthcare market, the business environment is not easy to handle for foreigners. Canada: particularly receptive to Medtech and Digital Health. Gain access to the complementary ecosystems of Toronto and Montreal. A thrilling alternative to the US to access the North American market. Unique agreement with Europe to fund innovative collaborations, and new trade agreements. Japan and South Korea: Gain access to these complex markets by tapping into existing successful networks and trustful business relations set up by mature cluster managers with established global networks. Why participate? Within the programmes you will have the opportunity on-site to develop an internationalisation strategy for your business, and answer questions like:

● What are the specific regulatory affairs? ● Which hurdles am I facing in my specific market? ● Which partners do I need and how can I find them in my region? ● Who can help with this within the local environment? When you finish the programme, you will have the knowledge and local contacts you need to successfully enter your target country. With the EIT Health GoGlobal programmes, you will have the opportunity to learn directly from experienced companies and experts who have already answered these questions. You will benefit from preparatory workshops to get the highest added value possible and get country-specific know-how (cultural and business) in the target market you wish to enter. Is it for me?
