Scripture Acts 2:32-42 NT Page 120

Sermon The Promise Rev. Jamie Armstrong Inspire the Living Faith…the title of this sermon series for May and June comes from Charles Wesley’s great hymn to the Holy Spirit – Spirit of Faith Come Down. During this time, we are reading the Book of Acts (over a fifty day period). While the book tells of some of the action and activities of the early apostles and church leaders, it really is a testimony to the work of the Holy Spirit in the church. With power from above, a group of scared and hiding ex-fishermen change the world, and a great persecutor of the faith becomes its greatest ambassador. The Book of Acts is rich with stories that will inspire and challenge us all. I invite you to join in reading the book of Acts during these 50 days. We have included a printed copy of the reading plan in today’s bulletin. A downloadable copy is also available on our website—click the Worship tab, select the Upcoming Sermons page, and click the link.

A pastor once asked a group of Vacation Bible School children what forgiveness felt like. The class of six year olds looked at him with blank stares. Finally, one little boy’s face brightened up. It was clear that an idea had struck. He smiled as he raised his hand. “I know what forgiveness feels like…it feels like its your birthday! It feels like you get to start again new!”

In his Pentecost sermon, Peter is inviting sinners to start again new. And so the journey begins…or continues…

The purpose of the award is to recognize worthy individuals, especially those whose work in the life of the church may not otherwise be recognized. This might be the anonymous servant of Christ who works behind the scenes, often unnoticed and often unappreciated, who cooks a meal, who opens the church doors and turns on the lights, who teaches children Sunday school, who works in the local school or volunteers with a local caring agency, or who volunteers in the church office. In lifting up one lay person, all persons are honored.

Selection forms are available in the church office. Please consider making a nomination. Our selection committee at First UMC has been organized and will meet on Tuesday, May 31 to review and select a recipient(s).

Laity Service Award honorees will be recognized at their local churches.

The Selection Form is available from the church office. The award criteria are listed on the form. The Selection Form should be submitted to the church office no later than Monday, May 23 . It is recommended that the same person not be selected more than once in five years nor a large number of awards be presented from a single church or charge in a given year.
