Abraham followed in complete obedience, but God halted the sacrifice of Isaac and provided a ram in his place (Gen. 22:1-12). God’s sacrificial provision prompted Abraham to give a special name to that place—YHWH-jireh —or “The Lord Will Provide.”

It is there that the nation of Israel was conceived (Gen. 22:13-18). And today, that very same location is possibly the most revered, controversial, and volatile place on earth.

It is known today as the Temple Mount, in Jerusalem (pictured above). Because it is God’s designated place as the only location where sacrifices can be made, the first and second Jewish Temples were located there, and it is the only place where the third one can be built. The closest proximity the Jews have today to the former Temples, and more specifically the Holy of Holies, is the Western Wall of the Temple Mount. So they are drawn to this “Wailing Wall,” believing that it is the closest they can

come to the “Divine Presence” until their Temple is one day rebuilt.

Over 500,000 ultra-orthodox Jews living in Israel believe the Old Testament Law is still in effect today and try to live their lives accordingly. As such, reading Leviticus 17:11 must be very uncomfortable to them because it says, in no uncertain terms, that there is but one remedy for sin . . . the shedding of blood! Since they obviously reject the fact that Jesus died as their blood sacrifice, there is but one answer for this—they must rebuild their Temple!

One of the most interesting places to visit today in Jerusalem is the Temple Institute. There the Jews are planning for the Temple to be rebuilt and are making all the implements necessary to go back to animal sacrifices. Room after room is filled with Temple necessities including golden vessels, priestly garments, an Altar of Incense, a six foot golden Menorah, a Table of the Showbread and even the silver trumpets blown by the Levites daily in the Temple.

Approximately 4000 years ago, God directed Abraham to journey to a very specific place, on a mountain called Moriah, to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice.

But as God would allow it, there is a problem, and no small one. A Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, completed during the Jewish dispersion in 691AD, is situated on Mount Moriah, right where most people assume the Jews need to build their Temple, making for a very sensitive political situation.

The Bible says the Temple will be rebuilt in the future. Before the Second Coming, Daniel 9:27 says the Jews will be back in their homeland doing what is almost unthinkable in today’s world . . . they will be sacrificing animals again on The Temple Mount on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem.

Most Evangelical Bible prophecy experts believe that God allowed the Arabs to build the gold-plated Muslim shrine “Dome of the Rock” in order to keep the Jews from prematurely returning to sacrifices before God’s timetable was ready (see picture of Dome, page 12). But at the proper time, the theory is that God will allow the Dome of the Rock to be destroyed, paving the way for the Jews to rebuild their Temple and return to sacrifices on Mount Moriah. This would purportedly take place shortly after the Rapture of the Church Age Christians.

But is the destruction of the Dome of the Rock really the key to rebuilding the Temple? And how would that play out, given the staggering influence of the one billion Muslims in the world?

God can certainly do anything He wants, regardless of opposition, but there is an interesting theory that the Muslim Dome may not need to be destroyed in order for the Jewish Temple to be built. According to Revelation 11:2, the two witnesses measure out where the Jewish Temple will be built and John, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirt, adds an interesting statement:

“And leave out the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, for it has been given to the nations”

The Temple Mount area covers over 40 acres, but the Holy of Holies in the Temple itself must be built in the exact place, somewhere on that 40 acres, where it was located in the two prior Temples. As you can imagine, Jews and other archeologists have tried repeatedly to ascertain that exact location, using excavations and even ground penetrating radar technology. But their efforts are blocked by the Muslims, who violently oppose them.

However, an alternate theory has developed that would possibly pin point the location of the original Temple just north of the Dome of Rock.

The so called “Northern theory” is given credibility in that, according to Josephus, the Jews came up out of the Kidron Valley, through the Eastern Gate and directly into the Temple’s “Gate Beautiful.” Today, when we walk around on the Temple Mount, we can easily see that the Eastern

Gate doesn’t line up with the Dome of the Rock. But it DOES line up with an outcropping of Mount Moriah rock. Could this be the place Abraham offered Isaac and the location of the first two Jewish Temples? There’s plenty of room around this outcropping to build a new Temple, and the two witnesses could easily command to build the new Jewish Temple on the Temple Mount without touching the Dome of the Rock.

The significance of this is that it’s possible that during the Tribulation, the Jewish Temple could be built on the Temple Mount, and around it other non-Jewish buildings could exist. The world leader (future Antichrist) who engineers a peace treaty between Israel and a 10 nation alliance could demand a truce allowing for both structures to exist. Even possibly a third Christian structure south of the Dome.

The coexistence of these places on the Temple Mount would be considered an abomination by Orthodox Jews, but that in itself would be consistent with the agonizing time of the Tribulation, or the 70th Week of Daniel. And if Elijah were to show up at the beginning of the Tribulation and say “The Temple goes here,” the Orthodox Jews wouldn’t argue with a guy that they’ve been waiting some 3000 years to show up!

But regardless of where the third Temple is situated, a time is coming, after the Tribulation, when the Bible says another fourth Temple will be built. We can be certain that that Temple will stand alone, on Mount Moriah, because that is the place where “God will provide.” From that Temple, Jesus Christ will rule for 1000 years, and no one will share His glory!
