The creation and implementation of the 'INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL SCHOOL FOR MARINE STUDIES (EIDEMAR)’ has been the priority strategic action of International Campus of Excellence of the Sea CEI·MAR. The Agreement on the Creation of the School was signed in the first instance by the Universities of Cadiz, Huelva, Almeria and Algarve, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Andalusian Regional Government's Institute for Research and Training in Agriculture and Fisheries. During the subsequent months, other institutions have completed incorporation, as the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University. EIDEMAR came into being as a legally recognised Centre in accordance with the requirements of national legislation when the Andalusian Council of Universities approved the creation of the Doctoral School at its meeting of the 24th of June, 2013.

In EIDEMAR has been designed four doctoral programmes endowed with high levels of specialisation in marine environment, validated by the Spanish Ministry of Education and registered in the RUCT.

The ‘Joint Erasmus Mundus Doctorate in Marine and Coastal Management (MACOMA)’ was added subsequently to these four doctoral programmes.

A wide range of educational activities (advanced training and specialist courses) have been designed and developed for the doctoral programmes associated with EIDEMAR, while other educational activities (such as the Inaugural Conference or the 1st International Summer School) have sprung directly from the Doctoral School.

The programmes are supported by 225 researchers working at 21 institutions in 13 countries and participating in 75 competitive research projects, in addition to having a high volume of quality scientific production with more than 2,100 scientific publications and over 200 doctoral theses approved in the last five years.

UCA Governing Council approves the proposed four doctoral programmes associated with EIDEMAR.

March 5, 2013 Fidel EchevarrÍa Navas, Professor of Ecology at the University of Cadiz, was appointed as the first Director of the School.

September 26, 2013

The University of Cadiz presented EIDEMAR Doctoral School.

Oct.-Nov. 2013 New students were enrolled for the first time, and preparations began for the first academic year.

January 18, 2014

Presentation of the ‘LABIMAR - Marine Research Laboratory Project’ proposed at the San Sebastian Castle, in order to accord the ceding premises to CEI·MAR, in part to install a marine laboratory for EIDEMAR.

January 29, 2014

The first meeting was held of the EIDEMAR Board of Governors, the School's highest executive body.

February 24, 2014

A meeting was held to coordinate programming of educational activities associated with EIDEMAR.

March 20, 2014 Darío Bernal Casasola, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cadiz, was appointed Academic Secretary of EIDEMAR.

March 27, 2014 The CEI·MAR Internationalisation Committee held its second meeting in Almeria. The plan to hold a CEI·MAR International Summer School was approved.

April 2-3, 2014 The Inaugural EIDEMAR Conference was held. Eight nationally renowned speakers participated.

July 3 -18, 2014 First International Summer School CEI·MAR, including a teaching block with two programmes consisting of four highly specialised marine-themed courses delivered in English and involving a large number of prestigious international researchers.

Sept. Oct. 2014 Resolution of 9 pre-doctoral fellowships, linked to EIDEMAR and priority areas of CEI·MAR.

The EIDEMAR International Doctoral School in Marine Studies was designed as an institutional structure whose primary purpose is to organise various teaching, educational and research activities in CEI·MAR areas of specialisation and lines of investigation. One of the School's main activities will be to attract students, teachers, researchers and business professionals and to promote mobility, prioritising actions in the international arena. It will also generate effective activities, resources and procedures that promote teaching and research of excellence through various interdisciplinary and inter-institutional relationships maintained by CEI·MAR.

EIDEMAR was launched with four highly specialised doctoral programmes in the field of marine studies, which encompass 17 lines of research and 227 researchers, of whom 45 are from 13 different countries.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Students enrolled in doctoral programmes must take a minimum of 600 hours of Educational Activities during their PhD (3 o 5 years, full or partial time), among the following activities (compulsory and optional activities). The specific activities of each program are detailed into each Doctoral Program Memory (posgrado.uca.es/doctorado).

This table shows the minimum, maximum and standard hours designated to each Educational Activity.

EIDEMAR

Although offer specialized Training Activities by the Doctoral Schools is not mandatory, EIDEMAR cyclically offers courses thematically linked to various PhD programs, which are publicized through the web (http://www.campusdelmar.es/en/eidemar-doctoral-school; http://formacion.fueca.org/doctorales/).
