Syria Update - Aid Reaches Population in Homs and

Harasta

Reto Stocker, head of the ICRC’s Afghani-

stan delegation from 2005 to October 2012

expressed concern about the increasingly

dire humanitarian situation in the country.

As he leaves the job, he worries about the

future of Afghanistan. In Being Vulnerable,

an exclusive Intercross Dispatch video fea-

ture, he explains how the fundamental prin-

ciples of the Red Cross, as guidelines for

the humanitarian mandate in Afghanistan,

have led to notable success amidst major challenges. He also recalls key events throughout

his work in Afghanistan (ICRC Intercross Blog). Click here to view the full article and watch

2012: A Year of Success for EHL in

Ontario!

Amid the violence, The ICRC and the

Syrian Arab Red Crescent have been

delivering aid to some of the areas

most affected by violence. This week

in Homs, hospitals and health facilities

were provided with supplies including

anesthethics, wound-dressing material

and intravenous fluid. Marianne

Gasser, the head of the ICRC

delegation in Syria stated, "while this

is certainly a positive development, much more remains to be done." She also commented

on the risks associated with delivering aid to conflict zones, stating, “we need to proceed

with caution, however, as it is very risky for everyone, not least for our personnel and for

Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers working in the most dangerous areas." ICRC officials

also visited several refugee settlements including those in Rural Damascus, Harastra and

Sweida (ICRC Intercross Blog). Click here to view the full article.
