The Expo is a world exhibition and takes place every five years. Originally, it was an industrial and arts and crafts exhibition. Today it is focused on global challenges and future-oriented solutions. The Expo 2015 in Milan will be open for six months under the motto “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The Expo grounds were developed in the vicinity of the existing Milan exhibition grounds. The last large world exhibitions took place at Hannover/Germany in 2000, at Aichi/Japan in 2005 and at Shanghai/China in 2010. At the Expo 2015 in Milan, more than 140 international exhibitors will present their interpretation of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

At Milan, the conceptual master plan, developed by the working group Jacques Herzog, Mark Rylander, Ricky Burdett, Stefano Boeri and William McDonough, interprets the Expo as a large sustainability park and in doing so opts not to have monumental structures. Instead, the park is marked by lightness and beauty: a “planetary botanical garden”, which is open to the people of Milan and the world. It also features a gigantic “Agrofood Park” on a rectangular grid, which is surrounded by water and incorporates striking landscape architecture.

Information regarding the Expo

Page 10: EGGER Information Guide Expo 2015

The German Pavilion's theme is “Field of Ideas” and it gives an insight into new and surprising solutions to feeding the world in the future. It also conveys an unexpected and new image of Germany as open, friendly and funny. The theme of the exhibition flows inside and the final highlight is a riveting and dynamic show called “Be(e) active!”.

Commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Economy and Energy, Messe Frankfurt entrusted the construction of the German Pavilion Expo 2015 Milan to ARGE. ARGE is the general contractor for planning and building the German Pavilion, as well as for the exhibition. Schmidhuber from Munich is in charge of the spatial concept, architecture and general planning. Milla & Partner from Stuttgart takes on the content concept, as well as the design of the exhibition and the media. Nüssli from Roth near Nürnberg covers project management and construction work.

The German Pavilion covers 4,913 m² and the exhibition itself occupies 2,680 m². In total, there will be 250 employees on hand to assist visitors. It has been estimated that a visit to the Pavilion will take approximately 30–45 minutes and approximately 45–60 minutes if the Be(e) active! show is included. Approximately 7,500-10,000 shows will take place over the 6 months and 3 million visitors are expected.

Milan Cathedral (Piazza del Duomo)

The Milan Cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in Italy. It has the third-largest surface area of any church in the world, after theSt. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and the Cathedral of Seville. You will find a breath-taking view of Milan from the cathedral’s roof. Close by you will find the colourful hustle and bustle of Milan, with elegant boutiques and restaurants. Other popular Milanese attractions are also within walking distance from the Cathedral square.

Leonardo da Vinci exhibition in the Palazzo Reale (Via Duomo 12)

Leonardo da Vinci is considered to be a genius. He was not only an artist, but an architect, mathematician, inventor and engineer. Da Vinci lived in Milan for a long time and his famous fresco “The Last Supper” in the church Santa Maria delle Grazie should be on every visitors sightseeing list. To celebrate the Expo Milano 2015, a special exhibition will take place from 15th April to 19th July 2015 in the Palazzo Reale.

Piazza dei Mercanti

During the Middle Ages, the centre of the densely populated Milan saw the creation of a central craft and commercial space, called the Piazza dei Mercanti. The 13th century piazza would have seen hair clippers, goldsmiths, knife sharpeners, shoemakers, weavers, tailors, and bakers plying their trade. The works on the Justice Palace started in 1228 and the building today is still located at the centre of the Piazza dei Mercanti. The Equestrian Monument is a reminder of Milan’s Mayor Oldrado da Tresseno, who commissioned the building.

With a population of 1.3 million, Milan is the second largest city in Italy and is the capital of the Lombardy Region and the Milan Province. The Metropolitan region, with its 7.4 million inhabitants, is the largest Italian conurbation. The most famous landmarks are the Milan Cathedral and the Teatro alla Scala, which are considered to be tourist magnets. Milan is the leading cultural, media and fashion metropolis of Italy, a university city and an international financial centre, which houses the headquarters of the Italian Stock Exchange. The city and its surroundings have a well-developed network of public transport, including 4 Metro lines (red, green, yellow and blue line), commuter trains and buses. Waiting times during the day are very short. Prices and tickets are the same for the Metro, bus and commuter railway.Tickets are available in many bars, newspaper stands, tobacco shops, as well as in all Metro stations.
