The natural solution for water remediation for “waikato raupatu river trust” waikato tainui
T H E W A T E RC L E A N S E R
PAG 2
In December 2013, Water
Cleanser New Zealand Limited
met with Waikato Raupatu River
Trust (The Trust) to present “The
Water Cleanser” a natural product
to assist in Waikato Raupatu River
Trust in its remediation of its waterways.
From the presentation, discussions and review
of the product, it was agreed to undertake a
measured trial in line with a budget and selected
markers over 4 months with regular liquid sampling
by recognised independent “Hill Laboratories” and
then review the findings.
This report responds to the
analysis of the 4 trial samples
(liquid samples) as provided from
within the Hukanui Farm effluent
pond; and shows a proven bio-
remediation by utilizing Water
Cleanser natural- based biological products to get
the pond back to an operational & healthy level.
This report contains description of
the effluent pond and the results
from utilising the Water Cleanser
products in the remediation of the
said pond.
The Trust selected “Hukanui Farm”, 72625 Bankier
Road, as the trial site, which has an effluent pond
of approximately 2000 m2. The effluent pond
was selected due to its inefficiencies to operate
properly.
The Water Cleanser Blocks were placed in the
effluent pond on 11 April 2014, with the first liquid
samples taken by Hill Laboratories on the 16 April
2014 and subsequent 4 months.

Initial findings were the inability for
the effluent pond to process the
solids efficiently as just straight
water was coming out of the
overflow pipe and discharging on to
the paddocks.
The Water Cleanser was invented
in 2000 by Robert Morgan after
a number of years of developing
natural anti-fouling systems for
live pearl shell farming, for the
family pearl business at Monkey
Mia, Western Australia. Whilst researching the anti-
fouling properties of compounds it was discovered that
compounds contained in wax kept water clean with
higher oxygen levels. Organic waste becomes the built-
up microbe population’s main food source, consuming
the organic waste more effectively and burning less
than half of the oxygen compared to normal bacteria.

and success and continues to do so by different
industry groups for innovative natural water
quality solutions. The Water Cleanser products
are an innovative, way to naturally solve water

Hill Laboratories (R J Hill Laboratories Ltd) is an
analytical testing laboratory and a 30 year old
100% privately owned New Zealand Company.
Hill’s supply a broad range of laboratory tests to
domestic and international markets and use the
latest technologies to supply the most accurate
and reliable results available. They have three
major testing areas: Agriculture, Environmental and
Food. This includes:
• Water - Drinking, marine, bore field and effluent water
• Soil - Contaminated from mining, agriculture and industrial use
• Air - Dusts and airborne chemical contaminants
• Produce - Agricultural produce including meat and eggs, vegetables and other foods

microbes that eat organic waste at accelerated
rates. These microbes are present in all waterways,
and they thrive on organic waste. By doing so they
clear the water and increase the oxygen levels.
The results are simply amazing; clearer, cleaner
and healthier water.
Mr Robert Morgan works closely on the R&D of
the product with Professor Ravi Fotedar and his
team within Curtin University and Scientist Mr Lee
Rieniets with Analytical Reference Laboratory all
located in Perth, Western Australia. Analyses of
contaminants from problem sites globally can also
be addressed via this scientific team.
As a New Zealand accredited laboratory (by
International Accreditation NZ), Hill laboratories
commitment to quality is tantamount to their
overall operating philosophy.
Their primary quality standard is NZS/ISO/IEC
17025:2005 which incorporates the aspects of ISO
9000 relevant to testing laboratories. This assures
clients of our commitment to good laboratory
management practices.
Hill laboratories were commissioned by Waikato
Raupatu River Trust to complete testing on a
select range of markers from liquid samples
within the said Effluent Pond and advise on the
results. Refer Appendix 1.

Are Hydrocarbon Blocks that accelerates the
breeding of beneficial microbes. Present in all
bodies of water, these microbes remain dormant
in nature until triggered by an energy source. The
microbes regard the Water Cleanser as an energy
source, allowing them to breed in mass numbers,
and proceed to eat organic waste.
The microbes gain plenty of energy from the
Water Cleanser which enables them to eat organic
waste at twice the speed of bacteria, therefore
making the natural process cleaner.
Water Cleanser, involves minimal disruption to
the ecosystem and environment, it removes
nothing physically, it enables re-oxygenation of
the water body bringing it back to life, it will strip
out excessive organic nutrients from the water and

Most importantly where bacteria require large
amounts of oxygen, these microbes do not
require oxygen to consume organics. This results
in oxygen that otherwise would be consumed by
bacteria being regained back into the water and

Situation analysis4As stated by the National Institute of Water
and Atmospheric Research (NZ) one of the two
key contaminants to lakes and river systems
is dissolved reactive phosphorus. The tests
undertaken by Hills
Laboratories have clearly shown that through
the use of The Water Cleanser, a 66% reduction
of dissolved reactive phosphorus has been
achieved in the trial dairy effluent pond. (What is
amazing is that the trial was conducted through
the winter months when micro activity is at its
lowest!) The water from this pond is then sprayed
onto paddocks. The run off then ends up in lakes
and rivers systems. This massive reduction in
dissolved reactive phosphorus will only benefit
the future health of all ponds and lakes adjacent
to the dairy effluent systems.
Due to heavy contamination blocks need to be
replaced every 10 to 12 weeks, with a two week
overlap of product rotation to maintain constant
water conditioning.

After 12 weeks we saw the following reductions:
• Total Alkalinity down 42%
• Total Hardness down 29%
• Carbonate Hardness down 48%
• Electrical Conductivity down 40%
• Dissolved Calcium down 26%
• Total Copper down 81%
• Total Iron down 88%
• Dissolved Magnesium down 28%
• Total Ammoniacal-N down 84%
• Nitrite-N down 24%
• Nitrate down 30%
• Nitrate-N 0% neutral
• Nitrate 0% Neutral
• Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus down 66%
• Phosphorus down 66%
And an increase in:
• Free Carbon Dioxide up 56%
Free carbon dioxide is a waste product from
healthy microbial activity. To have it rise shows how
good The Water Cleanser is at maintaining good
water quality.

Summary5The natural Water Cleanser tablets have proven
via scientific monitoring by Hill Laboratories that
they have the ability to remediate effluent ponds
with significant results.
It is noted that whilst the trial was conducted
during the winter months (warmer months the
microbes will be far more active which would infer
even faster and possibly greater results) it has had
a dramatic effect on the health of the pond and
subsequently its discharge on to farm land and
surrounding water ways.
With the success of the trial, Waikato Raupatu
River Trust can now support an all-natural solution
to the ever increasing water way contamination
of the Waikato. Water Cleanser is natural &
sustainable and shown to be effective in treating
Dairy Effluent which allows the Trust to take
the initiative of cleaning the water-ways of the
Waikato. We also see this as big step forward for
Tainui farmers to give back to the wellbeing of our
environment and for our generation of farmers
and fishermen to come.
