INTRODUCTIONINTRODUCTION
Importance of beans • Animal protein is in high demand in Kenya today,
therefore pulses play an important role as a source of low cost protein.
Bean production in Kenya • Area under bean production in Kenya is about 1
million acres. • Beans are important in all parts of Kenya except
at the coast.• Canning beans are exported to Europe or canned
locally.
PROBLEM STATEMENTPROBLEM STATEMENT
• Most soils in Kenya have low phosphate reserves hence responses to phosphatic fertilizers are not obtained by farmers.
• Poor soil fertility is the major constraint to bean production in Kenya.
OBJECTIVE OBJECTIVE
• To investigate the effect of DAP and manure on the growth, yield and nodulation of a navy bean crop.
HYPOTHESISHYPOTHESIS
• Different nutrient treatments will have different effects on the performance of a navy bean crop.
Materials and MethodsMaterials and Methods Experimental site: University of Nairobi, Field station, Kabete.
Materials •Navy bean seeds, DAP fertilizer, Manure, Land (7mx7m)
•Experimental design: Randomized complete block design(RCBD)
•Treatments: Manure, DAP and control•Treatment combination: 3x3•Recommended agronomic practices were followed:Land preparation ,planting at the onset of rains, spacing thinning and weeding,
,
DATA COLLECTION DATA COLLECTION
1. Samples of five plants from each plot were taken and used to determine:
-Nodule number per plant and - Mean plant height
2. Seed yield was determined using the number of pods per plant.

• Means:manure=35nodules DAP=2nodules
• t-calc=2.19
• t-table(at 0.05 probability level)=1.60
• T-calc is bigger than t-table therefore there is significant difference between the two means at 0.05 probability level.
DISCUSSIONDISCUSSION
• From the results obtained, DAP and manure had no significant effects on the yield and growth of the navy bean crop but had a significant effect on the plant nodulation. They both had a lower mean number of nodules per plant than the control experiment.
CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION
It is not necessarily economical for farmers to use DAP and manure on a navy bean crop since the two have no significant effect on yield: no of pods/plant.
