Program (GIDEP)
• Quarterly Training – If you opt to join the program, GIDEP
offers Quarterly Training at the GIDEP Operations Center.
Sessions are one day events that provide an overview of
the program and computer training on the GIDEP web sites.

Lab Addresses Waste Challenge,
Improves Worker Safety
• Savannah River National Laboratory to develop a
material to safely contain radioactive waste while the
waste is being shipped for disposal.
• The research, funded by EM, is working to create an
organic thin film that would be applied as a polymer
coating to the surface of plastic containment bags within
metal containers used to transport plutonium-238.
• Will provide more stability in the storage, transport, and
disposal of alpha-producing waste material.
• Technology addresses the focus on alternative materials
in radiation shielding and detection capabilities
• Dr. Aaron L. Washington is thelaboratory’ssenior
scientist and lead investigator for the EM research.
