An impolUtlt ~in the history of tile aewspaper wu the decisioo to deliver the Cooperater free of cbuge to every home in toWii, beginning with the issue of Sepcember 7, 1939.

The policy of free distribution renWned unchansed except for an unsu, ccessfuJ effon to go to a subscription basis in 1943. Successive boards of directors ha11e considered that the most importanr thing is to get the paper to each household in the: city.

As WeAre Although some readers may

recaJl when the News Jle.-lew bad only two pages, the standard size today is 12 and may be as lqc as 28 paaes. The deciding factor each week is the number of iD<:bel of odvertisiag which determines the number of pages that can be paid for.

AI praclll 10,500 Cn!e copies of the News Re't'iew are distribuled weekly to bome1 in Greenbelt. including Springhill Lake, Greenbriar, Greenbrook, Greenwood Village, Windsor Green, Green Spring, Hunting Ridge. Belle Point and to Greenbelt office buildings and shopping centers.

New Look This summer the paper

joined tbc 1990's when it moved to a cold type---computerized process at Chesapeake Printing in 8e1tsville. It was a heart-wrenching decision to leave Allen Printing Service. 1'1tree senerations of the Allen family have printed the Cooperator and New.s Review since the mimeograph was JiveD up. But the paper looks good. We've returned to the longer paae which allows more space for stories and larger photos. We've even added green but haven't yet found just the right shade.

Staff There have been 39 changes

in editorship during the paper's

Ill addition to !he expected cruDdll in the city•s operating budaet, the capital projects budJCI i& alao heiDI aq-.1 by overnms in the cost of tbe community center.

A $300,000 "contingency" item wu iDCJuded in the budJet for this project, to aJJow for unexpected exPenses. Additional coat increases resulted from unforeseen circumuances and errors or oversights.

The councilmembera, particularly Rodney_ Roberts. questioned the validity of some of these charges, such as whether the pain! really costs $80 per gallon. City Manager Daniel Hobbs re!ponded that the change or-
