The paper is uniq~e-the loncest-runninJ, all-volunteer, co-opclaliYe weekly newspaper in the United States--and has been featured in numerous books llld television programs, u well u graduate theses and otbu studeat papers on Goeenbelt, planned IQWDS, and tbc ~oopcntive movement. Some of these researcben have focused 0111 the paper 'a four­year, o .. id- and-Goliath struule against a $2,000,000 libel soit in wbic:h the paper '!II !' ....... ,~ by &lie U.S. Saprdle Court in 1970. For those who have won­dered how the paper gets out each week, the staff is IUJ<Iy volunteer (or, at least, mini­mally paid) and, in the Greenbelt tradition, organized as a labor co-opemive. The pa­per is unconnected with the city governmen~ the other coopera­tives in the city. or with Greenbelt Helmes, Inc. The pa­per gratefully accepts aupport from any segment of the com­muniry-from the cily in the form ot city advertisiDJ from GHI, in cooperate ads and io housing for its operali0111; and from the citizens when the fi. nancial pinch gets too tight. However, it is essentially self­supporting.

The paper lives by its adver­tising revenues, which cover all nonnaJ operations .

newsletter, offers a daily sched­ule, with descriptions of planned trips and special events. A few of the daily ac· tivities include exercises, Bible stlJdy, art appreciation, cogni­tive and cJ.pressi ve groups, biago. baking. current events, sensory stimulation and walks and talks. The nurse offers a health chat every week and oltoppiDa- lripo and beau1y shop trips are regulars.

Participants celebrate every· thing seasonal, including Sadie Hawkins Day. They even cele­bnle a "Pamper YourselF day.

Cordova shared news about another panfcipant, Mary Bower. Lui year Bower made personalized Chrillmas cards 10 send 10 lbe Day Case Center families and friends. When M&I)' was asked if she liked lbe Center. sbe responded. ''Yes and I love lhe people in i1."

Center Need! The Center has several

needs. Volunteers on a regular or occasional basis, or a one­time visit to share a talent or event are needed. They will be welcomed and appreciated. Gi­ant Food regi1ter ~ceiptS are aJso bein& collected in order to win activity supplies.

joined tbc 1990's when it moved to a cold type---comput­erized process at Chesapeake Printing in 8e1tsville. It was a heart-wrenching decision to leave Allen Printing Service. 1'1tree senerations of the Allen family have printed the Coop­erator and New.s Review since the mimeograph was JiveD up. But the paper looks good. We've returned to the longer paae which allows more space for stories and larger photos. We've even added green but haven't yet found just the right shade.
