One evening, after I finished working part-time at the supermarket, I was
going to meet my friend Jimmy. We were going to go and see the new Harry
Potter film at a movie theater in the town center. Jimmy and I both loved
reading the Harry Potter books. I couldn’t wait to see the film, but Jimmy was
not as thrilled as I was about the cinema.
Jimmy was late as usual, and we were lucky to get tickets because they
were almost sold out. We joined the large, excited crowd waiting to go in. We
found seats at the front, and we saw there were many students from our high
school there too.
Soon the movie began and in my imagination, I was completely lost in the
world of Hogwarts, the school where the hero Harry was sent to study magic. I
loved the costumes and that strange and wonderful building. The old principal
Dumbledore was my favorite character. He seemed so gentle and wise, but
powerful when he had to be.
For me, the two hours passed in a flash thanks to all the action scenes,
boys flying through the air, magic tricks, fantastic animals, and all the great
special effects1.
When the movie came to an end and the bright theater lights came on, I
looked across at Jimmy. He did not seem very happy and I wondered why. So, I
asked him what he thought of the film.
Jimmy looked serious for a moment. Then, to my surprise, he replied that
he thought the book was much better. I didn’t agree with him and said so.
Jimmy told me that he always found that books showed much more clearly
than movies what people in the stories were thinking and feeling. For example,
he said, there were lots of things going through Harry’s mind which we could
share in the book. But, in the movie, even though the actor playing Harry was
pretty good, we never really got the same close feeling. Jimmy said he had
never seen a film that was better than the book it was made from.
I tried to think of an example to prove him wrong. Maybe Jimmy was right
about some books. A book lets you spend days getting to know the characters
and their world, and every little change in the story. Films, on the other hand,
usually have to show all the events in two hours or less. So, the movie doesn’t
have enough time to do all that.
I answered that I thought movies sometimes made stories come alive, and
we could still enjoy them even if the book was better. Action movies and history
dramas were really best seen in a theater. I especially enjoyed going to a movie
theater because everyone was sharing all the excitement, the happiness and the
sadness with other people. It was much more fun than sitting in front of the
computer watching a DVD.
Jimmy replied that, for him, a movie could never take the place of the
original book. I had an idea. I saw that “The Lord of the Rings” was on the
next Saturday and I offered to buy Jimmy’s ticket. I had seen it before, but I
really wanted Jimmy to see a movie that I thought was better than the book.
He agreed to come, and next week we will see if he changes his mind.

Mark Nice to see you again, Jenny! Looks like you’re studying hard. Do you
have a big test or something tomorrow?
Jenny Hi there! No, actually I have a history paper to write. I was supposed
to finish it yesterday but got too busy with my part-time job and
couldn’t do it all.
Mark I know what that’s like! Preparation for studying abroad has been
really keeping me busy. I had to write a report last night, which took
me at least four hours to do. It was worth it, however, because it was
for the scholarship. I had to explain my plan for the entire year.
Jenny Wow, that must have been tough. But you must be so excited… I mean,
you get to go for free, right?
Mark Well, not exactly, but almost. I have to pay for my plane tickets and
food, but everything else is paid for by the scholarship. It even pays for
my books.
Jenny That is so cool! But even just the food is going to be pretty expensive.
Do you have enough money to last a whole year?
Mark Well, not yet, but I am hoping to find a place that will give me a job
just for summer vacation. It might be hard, however, if I said
something like that at an interview. They would probably never give
me the job.
Jenny Maybe that’s right at most places. But, you know, I think I know a
good place for you! It pays well and it’s for only two months!
Mark You have my attention! Tell me more!
Jenny There is a friend from my high-school days who has a small CD shop
near here and he’s actually looking for someone to run it for him over
the summer.
Mark Well, just over the summer would be perfect. I could do it, but I’d
want to see the place first.
Jenny Why don’t we drop by now? It’s just a few minutes’ walk from here
and I was actually thinking this morning that I wanted to see if he
had any new CDs.
Mark Sounds great. I would love to go!
Jenny Oh, but don’t tell him what I just told you. He hasn’t really announced
it yet and he’d probably want to tell you himself.
Mark Okay, I’ll pretend I don’t know a thing.
Jenny Great!
Mark Hey, maybe we could get lunch somewhere near his shop?
Jenny Yes, there is a great Vietnamese noodle shop just next door. It’s cheap,
delicious and you get so much food for your money.
Mark Well, that sounds great to me!
Jenny Let’s go then!
