While in Nepal Susan met a woman who started 38 schools throughout midwestern Nepal, to teach the ‘poorest of the poor’ children to read and write Nepali, to ready them for full time school. These children would never have gone to school, as education is not considered important for their subsistent farming families. They had a good chance of being SOLD by their families into prostitution and the circuses in India, never to be seen again. The program is called CHHAHARI which means ‘in the shade’. The classes take place for two hours a day, six days a week, under the shade of a huge tree. These classes are the only way to prevent the sale of these children, as they become an asset by establishing a small family business. Hearing of Susan’s first hand experiences with this program will be an education for us all.
