Q. This is the new
technology for connections
expected to overshadow
existing wireless network
connections.
DID YOU
KNOW
Editor’s NoteEditor’s NoteDear Readers,
I welcome you all to the new regime
of Project Management and
governance as the new government
is sworn in the state of Karnataka.
The last couple of months were exciting and
interesting as all eyes were on the Karnataka
elections and a lot was at stake on many frontiers.
The climax was never ending as fortune turned
sides pretty swiftly and people at large seemed to
understand how Kingmakers can sometimes
become Kings.
In a city like Bengaluru which is ever gasping for
space, and infrastructure issues are always on top
of people's mind, it will be difficult for the new
government to cope up with the ever increasing
challenges. Epic infrastructure projects like Metro
takes heavy toll on the general population and
slippages in time always reminds us of a strong
project management execution supported by all
stakeholders.
As allies struggle to coexist in the newly formed
government it is experience and lessons learned
from previous incidents that will help quicken the
pace in various projects.
Multiple stakeholders, in conflicting situations,
each having a different level of interest makes
decision making a key challenge. Sounds
familiar?
As India is transforming to a brighter spot in global
economic scene; Karnataka's contribution cannot
be neglected as the state has the reputation of
nurturing tech start-ups and providing a
conducive environment to live up to your dreams
of entrepreneurship. Ease of doing business will
be one of the factors which the new government
has to keep a watch on keeping in mind the strong
competition from the neighbouring states in
attracting business investments.
Though Karnataka is the third fastest growing
state with strong economic fundamentals, the
immediate challenges for the new government
ranges from agrarian issues to infrastructure
development. Karnataka is also one of the states
that boasts of computerization and automation in
most of the government services. However, the
ability to keep corruption at bay has always been
suspected.
The industrial and economic ecosystem of
Karnataka is quite heterogeneous where both
private and public enterprises co-exist, flourish,
and provide a flurry of opportunities by all means
in terms of employment, tax and revenue for the
government. The new government has to keep
the momentum on with both urban and rural
development giving equal impetus to both.
Reflecting on the times ahead, people of
Karnataka are looking for better governance and
policy makers in the new government have to put
a framework in place which focuses on time-
bound delivery and execution.
As we are gearing up for Project Management
Practitioners’ Conference (PMPC-2018), I
welcome you all to join us at conference which will
be held at Nimhans Convention Centre from July
12th to 14th. This year's conference theme is
“Architecting Project Management for Value
Creation”.
Thanks and Best Wishes

firmware, information/data, and
telecommunications).
In other words, Information Security
refers to the processes and
methodologies that are designed and
implemented to protect print, electronic,
or any other form of confidential, private
and sensitive information or data from
unauthorized access, use, misuse,
disclosure, destruction, modification, or
disruption.
The CIA Triad or Core Security Principles
is a model designed to guide policies for
information security within an
organization.
• Data confidentiality: Assures that
private or confidential information is not
made available or disclosed to
unauthorized individuals. Confidential
information can include personally
identifiable information such as Social
Security, credit card information or
account numbers, or, business
information, such as financial data,
employee records, and trade secrets.
• Privacy: Assures that individuals
control or influence what information
related to them may be collected and
stored by whom, and to whom that
information may be disclosed. The goal is
to preserve authorized restrictions on
information access and disclosure -
protecting personal privacy and
proprietary information. Assurance of
data privacy and protection against
unauthorized disclosure.
• Data Integrity: Guarding against
improper information modification or
destruction - ensuring non-repudiation
CIA Triad
1. Confidentiality:
2. Integrity:
and authenticity. A loss of integrity is the
unauthorized modification or destruction
of information.
• Assures that a
system performs its intended function in
an unimpaired manner, free from
deliberate or inadvertent unauthorized
manipulation of the system. To protect
against violations of integrity, the
network should be monitored for unusual
or suspicious activity. Strong audit
policies should be in place. And software
intrusion detection systems can be used
to monitor unauthorized changes.
Assures that systems
work promptly and service is not denied
to authorized users. Ensures timely and
reliable access to and use of information.
A loss of availability is the disruption of
access to or use of information or an
information system. A denial of service
attack is an attack against availability
which sends multiple requests to a
system in an effort to interrupt or
suspend services to legitimate users.
The impacts of cybercrimes can be
categorized into three levels:
• High: life threatening, severe damage,
loss of business continuity
• Medium: widespread disruptions,
degraded performance, no harm to life,
financial impact
• Low: local damage, no harm to life,
some financial impact, work around

The biggest cyber-threat is simply
complacency. Sometimes we
unintentionally forget to implement best
practices like:
• Creating a security policy
• Educating employees
• Putting software protection in place

3. Availability:
Role of Project Managers
Internet and Cybercrime
Information Security
The global internet population is 2.4
billion and growing. Businesses using
external hosted web services are growing
manifold and Bring You Own Device
(BYOD) adoption is increasing in every
industry. The global data growth has also
been phenomenal – from a measly 0.01
GB in 1992 to 50,000 GB in 2018. By
2020, we expect to have more than 50
Billion connected “things”.
This huge boom in internet population,
data speed, and connected devices has
brought its share of challenges. The most
important among them is the boom in
cybercrimes. Multiple studies estimate
cybercrime costs to cross $2.1 Trillion by
the year 2019 and $6 Trillion by 2021. A
staggering 60% of small businesses go
out of business six months after a cyber
attack.
The most common cyber attacks occur
due to credential reuse, MITM or
eavesdropping, malware, ransomware,
phishing and denial of service. More and
more attacks are using an economic
model akin to cybercrime-as-a-service,
infecting company networks with
ransomware that covertly encrypts the
files. This prevents access to the files and
the companies are forced to release
payment for recovery. Hacking or
shutting down a business by Distributed
Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack are also
increasing. A Verisign/Merrill research
shows that one-third of all downtime
incidents today can be attributed to DDoS
attacks.
To counter the rapid growth in
cybercrime, companies have been
focusing on increasing Information
Security. According to NIST, Information
Security is “the protection afforded to an
automated information system in order to

“You can't just ask customers what they
want and then try to give that to them.
By the time you get it built, they'll want
something new.”
The quicker you connect your product to
your customer's current AND future
needs, the better. This is how you
become a market leader and stay there.
The relationship between buyer and seller
has fundamentally changed. We live in a
day and age of instant communications,
short attention spans, and limited
patience.
Time is a luxury you simply don't have.
In a customer-driven world, whoever
releases products that meet customers'
needs and gets to them first… wins.
Keep in mind, you'll never be able to
onboard the customer who never bought
from you and you'll never be able to grow
the customer who doesn't continue
buying from you. So it's best to show
value early and often by releasing
functional products that you can iterate
and improve over time.
Speed to market is essential!
No one likes to be managed, however,
everyone needs direction.
Management is all about control. In fast-
paced environments, the challenge is for
organizations to loosen their control in
favor of agility.
Believe it or not, in the future, businesses
will optimize their projects for speed and
operate with LESS management. This
begs the question –
Do we manage projects or do we
facilitate agreed upon outcomes? Better
yet, is the goal to manage projects or
deliver value?
Disruptive forces are already making
traditional forms of management
irrelevant. Competitive industries such as
IT are embracing 'management lite' and
self-directed methodologies such as
Scrum and Holacracy.
Impatient Customers
The Solution:
Let's face it. We live in a customer-
driven world.
Business success is predicated on your
ability to rapidly meet (and exceed) your
customer's wants, needs, and
expectations. In other words –
This is just as true for Fortune 100
corporations as it is for small to medium
sized businesses. Take for example the
telecommunications giant, AT&T. Several
years ago, to remain competitive, they
decided to retrain 250,000 of their
employees.
A New York Times article stated –
“AT&T's competitors are not just Verizon
and Sprint, but also tech giants like
Amazon and Google. For the company to
survive in this environment, Mr.
Stephenson needs to retrain its 280,000
employees so they can improve their
coding skills, or learn them, and make
quick business decisions based on a fire
hose of data coming into the company.”
AT&T needed its employees to make
quick decisions, so they could build
products and services as fast as their
competitors. Randall Stephenson,
chairman and chief executive of AT&T,
emphasized, “We value people who are
learning machines and are highly
adaptable (anti-fragile) over people who
only bring experience…. We realized a
long time ago that you can't fight
technology change and win.”
The days of large incumbents resting on
their laurels are over. Either you quickly
adapt or face imminent extinction.
Do you remember Palm, Inc., the
company that once put out the popular
Palm Treo line of smartphones? Well,
they ascended to smartphone heaven.
But in 2007, when Apple devices were
introduced, the company couldn't adapt
quickly enough and everyone knows
where Palm Inc went since then..
So can we avoid being reduced to
irrelevancy? Here are 3 trends that are
driving the need for speed.
Your entire company must be
built for speed.
Relentless Competition
Rapid Innovation
Traditionally, agility has been associated
with small, emerging competitors.
Nowadays, large companies such as
Amazon and Netflix are just as nimble as
some of the most agile startups.
How is this?
By their very nature, high-growth
companies are disruptive. Speed isn't
just a nice-to-have for them. It's one of
their primary competitive advantages.
I'm talking about the S-P-E-E-D
necessary to –
…hire and fire.
…produce and market.
…sell and deliver.
…even EXIST.
There will be winners. And, of course,
there will be losers. When the dust
settles, make sure you're one of the
winners.
Leading in a world of uncertainty is
daunting. It's not easy for large
organizations to update systems,
methodologies, and protocols that have
been in place for decades. Strong
leaders must guide organizations through
this change by focusing stakeholders'
attention on innovation and process
improvements.
Customers expect you to anticipate what
they need before they even know they
need it. This is where innovation and
agility meet.
Steve Jobs (Apple), once said –

achieve an end goal makes it easier to
adapt and follow the lead, however
daunting the tasks may seem at first.
Great mentors have this in them to make
one see the end game, the final outcome.
In general, people like to give their best
and therefore when they present an idea,
lots of effort, thoughts, and good
intention ride along with it. If the idea is
worth a shot, great mentors take a risk,
give a chance, and do all they can to
make the idea a success.
Seeing their idea realized is a big deal for
people and most likely they will pay
forward all the help that they had
received, many times over.
Great mentors build an environment that
fosters ideas, encourages harmonious
interactions, and create one of the best
work places.
Some ideas will work while some won't.
As a mentor, when you foresee that
something won't work out, it's best to be
upfront before much time is spent on a
wasted effort.
It's not as if someone's trampling on
Giving People a chance
Being Honest
anyone's toes. Mentors are very
mindful/tactful about it.
You can bet, when people know that it's
not personal, they'll come up with far
better ideas/solutions than what was
tossed aside.
Great mentors are generally very curious.
This trait opens new vistas, broadens the
horizons, makes them current in the
market, and gives them a foothold in the
Generation Z world.
Most of all, such mentors enjoy a respect
and admiration for the knowledge that
they have built solely out of this curiosity.
As they say, change is the only constant
thing. When you know something is for
the better, it's best to let go and embrace
the changes with gusto.
Great mentors seem to move with the
wind, discarding what's not needed,
learning and adapting to the changes,
and wherever possible bringing in their
expertise to make the changes a success.
It's great to be light on your feet, isn't it?
If you are a mentee and find yourself
among extraordinary mentors, it's best
that you learn all you can from them. I
strongly believe it'll stand you in good
stead not only in your career but in your
life too. On the other hand If you are a
mentor, you will leave a lasting
impression often recalled and mentioned
with respect.
Being Curious
Being able to let go
Summary
Are you a good mentor? If you can set
people up for success, within a short
time, you are. Are you an extraordinary
mentor? You move into this category,
with your own effort, if you can make
people believe in themselves enough, for
them to reach for the stars that they
never even knew existed before. Often
the magical path that leads the mentees
to the never-before-imagined heights of
achievements, is your time with them,
sharing the knowledge gained from your
experience, have a patient ear, and an
unbiased approach. Do people ever forget
such mentors, well definitely not.
Which brings us to the question, do these
mentors par excellence do anything
special? Of course, they do – here are a
few things that they seem to do right, at
the right time, and in right proportion.
The 'extraordinary mentor' is always
there to discuss ground-breaking
ideas/thoughts that make a difference to
the group and the organization. And more
importantly once the direction is set, she
leaves people on their own. This will help
in making people more responsible. That
investment made is the first flight to the
unheralded space.
The extraordinary mentor is an artist who
paints the big picture. For people, at
times, the new processes can be
Herculean and overwhelming. Having
someone tell you how everything fits
together to form a pretty picture or

The Art of Mentoring
Less management allows for transformative breakthroughs,
technological innovations, and agile teams.
Rather than compartmentalize decision-making like a Henry Ford
assembly line and force decisions down a hierarchical
management structure, today's growth organizations de-
compartmentalize the way they approach projects.
As organizations go lean, they must unlock the hidden value of
their most valuable resources – project teams. This can be
initiated by letting them know how their projects fit into the bigger
picture. In this way, future project teams are better positioned to
quickly act and innovate.
In other words, they'll be encouraged to think of the business
implications of their decisions and take an ownership stake in
projects instead of delivering crafted outcomes meted out by
dispassionate technology.
Project teams should be less concerned about controlling
outcomes and more focused on producing value. Ultimately, the
value that's produced should warrant the effort that's expended.
Since the customer determines value, project teams should be
free to rapidly adapt deliverables as they work towards the end
goal. This doesn't negate the high-level constraints. Instead, it
empowers teams to address industry transformation and
technology improvements in real time.
At the end of the day, the effort is justified because –
“Speed is compensated by value.”

DID YOU
KNOWA. 2018. Though the technology that should earn the moniker
"5G" is debated, we are being promised speeds up to 10
times the current LTE networks. 5G will run on a new "high-
spectrum band", which uses higher frequency signals than
4G. All major players globally - T-Mobile, Verizon, Softbank
and AT&T - have been aggressively deploying millimeter
wave multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO)
infrastructure to bring home the insanely crazy speeds
later this year. The infrastructure costs for the companies
are touted to be lower because the network is delivered
through wireless. But do we need 5G? It is predicted by
analysts that by the year 2020, there will be a boom in
personal connected devices. There will be 50 billion
connected devices worldwide like smartphones, tablets,
smartwatches, fridges, cars and even smart clothes.

• Encouraging sensible cyber-security practice
• Reviewing security policies every so often
Assets are what we protect as owners. As a project manager, you
should be aware of the threats and challenges to your project
assets. A deliberate / targeted attack or an opportunistic attack
can impact multiple devices and stop production till it's rectified.
The graphic below shows the concept of a system resource, or
asset, that users and owners wish to protect.
At an organizational level, following are a few recommendations for
maintaining a safe internet environment:
• Mandate C-Level execs (CEO, CFO, etc.) experience a Red
Team assessment (adversarial testing of security policies)
• Implement an approach and culture of Least Privilege,
enforcing the minimal level of user rights, or lowest
clearance level, that allows the user to perform his/her role
• Employee training, measurement and continuous
improvement
• Use Multi-Factor Authentication, Identity Access
Management and Protect Privileged Accounts
• Prepare and implement a Cyber Incident Plan
• Test restoration effectiveness and efficiency of backup and
recovery plan
• Correlate, monitor and audit security logs
This new paradigm is the ability to operate the business
processes in normal and adverse scenarios without adverse
outcomes, while reducing customer harm, reputational
damage and economic loss. It is balancing risks and
opportunities and relies on people, processes, and technology.
Resilience, as defined by Presidential Policy Directive PPD-21,
is the ability to prepare for and adapt to changing conditions
and withstand and recover rapidly from disruptions. While
Information Security is the rule of today, Cyber resilience is
the priority of the future.
