NUST SEECSthe Mosaic of ExcellenceAll too often we are stuffing the heads of the young with the products of earlier innovationsrather than teaching them to be innovative. We treat their minds as storehouses to be filled

rather than as instruments to be used. -- Robert Finch

As the seats of higher learning, universities have a very

demanding task if the education they impart has to

transform the economic, political, social and moral fabric

of their respective societies. Harvard, MIT, Yale, Oxford

and Cambridge have eminently contributed not only to

the intellectual prowess but also to the economic

d e v e l o p m e n t o f t h e i r r e s p e c t i v e c o u n t r i e s .

National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST),

an institution with a progressive vision, has made its mark

as a university with a difference. Today, NUST boasts its

entry to the galaxy of top four hundred universities of

the world. With its leadership, faculty and administration,

dedicated to the core, NUST is destined to scale continued

heights in its quest for the best in education and research.

It already commands enviable respect and prestige not

only in Pakistan but also on the global horizon. The passion

for excellence runs deep into every constituent institute

under the umbrella of this premier public sector university

in the region.

About NUST SEECS

NUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer

Science (formerly NIIT) chronicles an incredible tale

of what focused efforts with a clear vision, singular

commitment and a passionate quest for excellence

are capable of achieving within a span of less than

a decade. From its embryonic appearance in 1999 as

a tiny IT wing of NUST, this institute has blossomed

into one of the finest seats of higher education, of

which not only NUST but the entire nation can be

legitimately proud. The philosophy of education at

SEECS puts due premium on an essential blending of

engineering and computing education with a sound

orientation of social and humanitarian interests of

the society. Bland vocational education sans sound

social and moral grooming tends to undermine the

very purpose of education as an instrument of personal

and societal development. With the relocation of

SEECS in the idyllic setting of H-12 Campus, this

institute is optimistically destined to set a new pace

for the cultivation of wholesome social and moral

values in the students who are privileged to enter

its portals.

In the Quest of New HorizonsFor the last decade or so, Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has

strongly advocated the need for and supported the cultivation of potent

research cultures at universities all over Pakistan. An active research culture

at a university can be simply defined as an environment that motivates and

facilitates qualified individuals or groups to produce pragmatic solutions for

problems of significance.

“A dynamic world-class research culture is vital for the acquisition of new

knowledge. It is also crucial to economic growth and social cohesion.”

[Source: HEC Website.]

Active university research environments result in revenue-generating products

or intellectual properties which in turn strengthen the national economy.

Hence, dynamic research culture at Pakistani universities is essentially needed

to achieve Pakistan’s visibility on the world map of emerging knowledge-based

economies.

Research Culture @ SEECSNUST School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (SEECS) has been

able to create and sustain successfully an active and potent research culture.

In the very short period of time since its inception, SEECS has made relentless

efforts to build a research environment of international stature. To this end,

the school has significantly expanded its faculty and student intake, raised

considerable research funding, established high-tech research labs, developed

concrete professional linkages with the industry, filed indigenous patents,

and produced numerous high-quality research publications. At SEECS, research

aptitude and capacity are one of the main evaluation criteria for the selection

of prospective faculty members. Furthermore, faculty members are provided

maximum logistical support to set up research labs and are also introduced

to relevant industry people, as well as to premier international research

institutions so that they are able to work on research problems of national

and international significance right from the start of their careers.

Industry LinkagesOn the domestic front, SEECS has been quite successful, as one of the pioneers,

in knitting industry and academia into a meaningful partnership and working

in tandem on several practical ideas for the mutual benefit. This has helped

them jointly propel the dormant conditions of our technology and engineering

education centres. SEECS-Corporate Advisory Council that meets biannually

to exchange views with industry representatives is gradually evolving into a

vibrant forum of close interaction. This has greatly facilitated the two sides

to share very valuable inputs from each other and devise improved strategies

to achieve the goals of academia-industry partnership. SEECS industry linkages

have recently been extended overseas and a handful of projects have already

commenced in collaboration with US companies.
