The Montessori StoryDr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was one of the most important early years educators of the 20th century. She was an innovator of classroom practices and ideas which have had a profound influence on the education of young children the world over.
She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome’s Medical School and became interested in education through her work as a doctor. She later moved on to establish schools for the disadvantaged children of working parents in Rome.
The first Children’s House was established in Rome in 1907, and by 1910, the Montessori Method had gained international fame in Europe, USA, Japan and India. Maria Montessori was nominated for the Nobel Prize three times.
She not only left us with a rich legacy in education, but a tremendous impact on our view of human nature itself. The Montessori method of education works for children of all levels of mental and physical abilities, and across cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Today it continues to bring out the best in each child.
In 2007, the world celebrated the first centennial of Montesori education - 100 years of innovation and inspiration!
The Montessori MethodThe method developed by Montessori is a specialised education technique. It is based on a true understanding and deep respect for developing the child as:• A unique being, different from adults and from each other• A whole being, whose intellectual, emotional, social, physical, aesthetic and spiritual needs are inseparable and equally important• A growing being, with needs for activity, exploration, independence, order, self-discipline and self-perfection
About Montessori Centre InternationalMontessori Centre International (MCI) is a well established Montessori teacher training college in London, dedicated to providing excellent training to all those who wish to work in childcare and early years settings using the Montessori method of education.

MCI’s courses are recognised and accredited by:• British Accreditation Council for Independent Further & Higher Education• Open and Distance Learning Quality Council (ODLQC)• Montessori Education UK• The Montessori Board of Examiners (MBE)
Student Testimonies
As parents, we are delighted and amazed at the positive changes in Tara during her time studying at SEGi. Through the support and training provided at SEGi, her dream of early childhood teaching is becoming a reality before our eyes. Through the dedicated staff at SEGi, we can see that Tara has grown in confidence, skills, understanding and character and we have no hesitation in recommending SEGi and its staff to any parent who desires the best for their child.
Darin Browne, Tara’s Father
As a first step towards my dream of becoming an educator of young children, I chose to study the Diploma in Early Childhood Education at SEGi College and enrolled in January 2007, right after my SPM. Three months later, I received my SPM results and was elated to have scored 10 As. I was given a scholarship by SEGi to cover all my tuition fees. As a student at SEGI, besides gaining the academic knowledge essential for an educator, I have also learnt a lot of practical hands-on and life skills that will be significant in my later life. I intend to further my education up to degree and master level in the early childhood field so that I can make a difference in the lives of the children under my care.

Going back to school was a challenge for me since I have a young daughter to take care of and having worked for so many years. However, the high quality Early Childhood Education Programmes (MCI & BECH course) helped me to understand the needs and development of young children (especially my own daughter) better. With lecturers and admin staff who were friendly, helpful and committed in giving students the support, confidence and ‘extra mileage’ guidance, I gained a lot of knowledge and skills in educating young children. Lastly, the most important thing that I got from these courses was the understanding of how important teachers’ roles are in children’s lives.

I’m currently taking the Diploma In Early Childhood Education at SEGi College. The reason I picked this course is because I want to be a child psychologist in the future. As I journey along, I discovered how interesting it is to be working with children! As I venture further into my studies the lecturers in SEGi have given me much encouragement, advice, support, and inspiration to pursue my dream. This course provides hands-on projects on how to work with children such as sending us to the Down Syndrome centre for voluntary service. To all the guys out there who want to touch children’s hearts and minds like me, I strongly encourage you to be a part of this programme.
Kenneth Leong
I received my International Diploma in Montessori Pedadogy in 2007. The training from SEGi has resulted in my setting up of a pre-school, primary and lower secondary urban project for the poor and the under privileged children from the Sentul community. I also head different projects such as training of teachers and setup and supervision of rural preschool projects in the country. I recently obtained my post graduate certificate in education and am now pursuing a Masters in Education with University of Southern Queensland.
Petrina Shee Shiang Fei
It all started with this passionate desire of mine many years ago: ‘I want to be a professional early childhood educator’ Today, I am proud to say that both the courses, the Diploma in Montessori Education and the Bachelor in Early Childhood Education (USQ) offered by Summit International College (now SEGi College), have equipped and empowered me to be an effective early years educator and trainer in this field. The knowledge gained here has also propelled me to complete my Master in Education at University of Exeter, UK. Today I am the Academic Head and Manager (EYE) of Beaconhouse School System (BSS), an international organisation that believes in quality care and education.
Mikel Liow Peng Hiong
I have always wanted to work with children and expected it to be a piece of cake. But after attending the Diploma in Early Childhood Education, I realized that the course is not only about ABC and 1,2,3. This course has given me an eye-opening experience into the world of Early Childhood Education. The course is very informative and there are many real-life experiences involved. The lecturers have been very helpful in ensuring that we get the best to give our charges the best childhood.
Chung Bee Yan
I scored 10 As in my SPM and am really thankful that I am able to pursue my dream of doing a Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) with a scholarship offered by SEGi College. Being in the Early Childhood Education field has opened my eyes to a lot of experiences and I have learnt much about the psychology of children and good developmentally appropriate practices from the many interesting subjects that I take in the DECE programme.
