Hot off the press
Barry,
As of 10:30AM EST this morning, October 10th, we have no more bug fixing going on in the Release 1 code base. There are no bugs in the queue for approval.
The biggest remaining issue is testing out the test server setup instructions.
We have not made any significant code changes this week, which is what we wanted prior to our release on Friday……The 13th!!
Meanwhile, testing continues. Kymber reported that she created over 120 eDocs over the weekend without any major problems.

Governance /cont’d…Example
• Kuali Financial Systems Board– Voting member from each Investing Institution– NACUBO and The rSmart Group
• Project Manager– Multiple Development Teams…locations– Developers from each Institution
• Functional Council– Voting member from each Partner Institution– NACUBO and The rSmart Group– Subject Matter Subcommittees
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Kuali Research Administration
• Kuali Functional Council Scope Discussions– KFS handles Budget and Post Award
• Within KFS Committed Scope
– Need for Pre-Award– Need to address Compliance
• Realization– Research Administration is likely as big as the
Financial System
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Kuali Research Administration
• How Proceed? Apply “Kuali” Approach…– Build from a “known base”
– Using Tendered Resources
– From Committed Investing Partners
– With Clear Governance Structure• Board of Directors• Project Manager• Functional Council• Technical Council
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Kuali Research Administration
• Identify a Strong Baseline…
• MIT COEUS– Strong Pre-Award– Acceptance within Higher Ed
• Significant number of installations• Strong User Community
– MIT Desire to Broaden Sustaining Support for COEUS– Desire to Gain from Improved Technical Architecture
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Kuali Research Administration
• MIT Contributes COEUS IP to Kuali– COEUS Version 4.x developed under existing COEUS
structures and practices
• Kuali Research Administration (KRA)– KRA COEUS 5.0– Developed using Kuali structures and practices
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Kuali Research Administration
• KRA Development Investors:– Cornell, Indiana, Arizona, MIT, MSU– Mellon Foundation, $1.5 MM– Coeus Board liaison: Brown University– Coeus Community Rep: University of Maryland
• KRA based on MIT Coeus functionality, code set
• KRA scope: Integrated pre/post award financials, compliance tracking, online application and reporting, workflow

Advances with the Kuali Technical Infrastructure
David Lassner
Chief Information Officer
University of Hawaii
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
In the beginning…
• There was OneStart Workflow from IU– And the Kuali Partners thought it was good
• Then our Kuali technical & architectural leads collaboratively designed and implemented the Kuali Nervous System– A unified architecture integrating workflow &
eDocs & more– And we have used it to develop KFS
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
And at the same time…
• IU, Cornell and Hawaii have had active Workflow projects outside the KFS project– IU has years of production experience with mission-
critical non-Kuali workflow apps and adding more– Cornell bringing up workflow and working on EDocLite– Hawaii working on workflow-based eTravel & eLeave
• IU Workflow system has become Kuali Enterprise Workflow (KEW)
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
As we plan KFS Phase II, KRA & KSSS…
• Kuali is evolving into an umbrella for administrative apps• The technology infrastructure investment that was made
for KFS can be leveraged by other Kuali projects• Use of a common development framework will improve
productivity and consistency across Kuali modules and projects
• Kuali aside, many of us need a reusable development environment to support a general approach to systems development at our institutions
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Behold the Kuali Infrastructure Suite
• Kuali Enterprise Workflow• Kuali Nervous System• a generalized service bus• a generalized notification service
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
What Needs to be Done
• Extract the reusable infrastructure from the rest of the KFS code
• Enhance infrastructure components to allow arbitrary applications to “plug in” without modification
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
Status of Kuali Infrastructure Suite Proposal
• Concept strongly supported by Kuali Board
• Proposed for completion in Spring ‘07
• Now need to fully align Board and Technical strategies -- including resourcing
EDUCAUSE 2006, Dallas
In the Continuing Spirit of Community Collaboration
• As Kuali expands, we need a coherent technology framework
• Beyond Kuali, each of us developing apps in Java/J2EE needs an infrastructural environment
• We’d rather work it out together than each on our own
• Now we’re figuring out how!
